The Color Wheel

This block is a version of the basic nine patch block because of the
number of grid spaces in it’s design.

****Always add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each pattern piece be-
fore cutting.****

This is the Color Wheel nine

patch block is the #5 block in
the Sampler Quilt.

12” total block size finished,

12 1/2” unfinished

Just as the Simple Nine Patch Block, the Color Wheel block will be constructed in
three rows of three blocks.

All rows are the same height, and have similar components. Be watchful of the
placement of your fabrics so the finished design will look like the photo.

Stitch the block in rows. Then stitch the rows together to form the block, just as
the Simple Nine Patch Block was formed.

(1) Color Wheel Block

(E)
(F) FINISHED SIZES:
4 inch hourglass-triangle squares
4 inch center square
(4) (A) (2) 4 inch double triangle square
CUT SIZES:
4 1/2 inch center square (A)
(D) (C)
5 1/2 inch squares (B, C, D, E, F)
(B) 6 1/2 squares (B, C, D, E, F)
(3)

Steps:
1. Select four contrasting fabrics, a background fabric, and a center (border)
fabric for this block.. (If you are limited in fabric choices, you can use two
contrasting fabrics and place them diagonal to each other.
2. Cut 1 square of border fabric for the center block (A) that measures 4 1/2”.
3. Cut 2 squares of background fabric (B) that measure 5 1/2”. Cross cut each of
these squares into 2 triangles. This makes 4 half square triangles of back-
ground (B) fabric.
4. Cut 1 square of background fabric (B) that measure 6 1/2”. Cross cut this
square into 4 quarter square triangles.
5. Cut 1 square of fabrics (C, D, E, F) that measures 5 1/2”. Cross cut each of
these squares into half-square triangles.
6. Cut 1 square each of fabric (C, D, E, F) that measures 6 1/2”. Cross cut each
of these squares into quarter-square triangles.
7. Lay the block out. Pair up the quarter-square triangles and stitch to form
half-square triangle units. Each should use one background quarter-square tri-
angle and one quarter-square triangle of (C, D, E, F). Do not press!
8. Attach a half-square triangle of (C, D, E, F) to the quarter-square unit just
stitched in step 7. Carefully stitch, and press. Trim the unit to the 4 1/2” un-
finished size square. This creates block units 1, 2, 3, and 4 (see photo) Set
aside.

9. Attach a half-square triangle of (C, D, E, F) to the half-square triangle of
background fabric. Carefully stitch, and press. Trim the unit to the 4 1/2” un-
finished size square. This creates the block units at the corner of the Color
Wheel Block.
10. Place all block units on your cutting board so that the Color Wheel design is
created.
11. Stitch the block units together in columns and rows just as you did the Simple
Nine Patch Block.
12. The completed block should measure 12 1/2 inches unfinished size.
