The Amish Diamond

This block is a version of the basic nine patch block because of the
number of grid spaces in it’s design.

****Always add a 1/4 inch seam allowance to each pattern piece be-
fore cutting.****

This is the Amish Diamond nine

patch block is the #2 block in
the Sampler Quilt.

12” total block size finished,

12 1/2” unfinished

Just as the Simple Nine Patch Block, the Amish Diamond block will be constructed
in three rows of three blocks.

The second row (center row) will be taller than row 1 (top) and row 2 (bottom).

The Center row will also have a pieced block in the middle, rather than a solid
piece of fabric as the nine patch block did.

Stitch the block in rows. Then stitch the rows together to form the block, just as
the Simple Nine Patch Block was formed.

 Amish Diamond Block
(A)

FINISHED SIZES:
3 inch finished squares
3 x 6 inch finished rectangles
(C) (B)
6 inch finished center square
3 inch setting center triangle squares
(A) CUT SIZES:
3 1/2 inch squares
3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch rectangles
6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch center square

Steps:
1. Select two to three contrasting fabrics for this block. (Note: the center
“diamond” could be a different color than the side rectangles or it could be
the same fabric. Your choice.
2. Cut 1 strip of fabric (A) that measures 3 1/2” by WOF.
3. Cut 1 strip of fabric (B) that measures 3 1/2” by WOF.
4. Cut 1 fabric square that measures 6 1/2” by 6 1/2”.
5. Cross-cut eight squares that measure 3 1/2” from fabric (A).
6. Cross-cut four rectangles that measure 3 1/2” by 6 1/2” from fabric (B).
7. Draw a diagonal pencil line across four of the fabric (A) squares. Make sure
the line goes from point to point.
8. Place one of marked (A) squares at the corner (face down) of the center
6 1/2” square. Stitch on the line as shown in the first photo. Repeat this step
for all four of the center square corners. Press each corner as it is stitched.

9. Now you are ready to piece the block. Lay all patches out to for the Amish
Diamond block. Refer to the picture for placement.
10. Stitch the rows. Then, combine the completed rows to create the block.
