BACKGROUND:
The
154
known
published
sonnets
wriJen
by
William
Shakespeare
are
the
most
recognizable
and
famous
poems
in
all
of
literature.
The
sonnets
range
in
complexity,
theme,
and
topic;
in
fact,
in
some
sense
they
reflect
the
modern
approach
to
poetry
that
came
to
represent
the
Elizabethan
Era.
TASK:
Each
student
will
select
a
Shakespearean
sonnet.
Students
will
need
to
have
the
poem
approved
by
the
instructor,
and
then
prepare
a
memorized
recita,on/performance
to
be
presented
in
class.
GOALS
OBJECTIVE:
Using
your
ac,ve
speaking
skills,
you
should
be
able
to
deliver
a
recita,on
and
discussion
of
your
selected
Shakespearean
sonnet.
ASSIGNMENT RULES: Failure to follow these rules will result in loss of points.
1. Failure
to
show
up
on
scheduled
day
of
recital
will
result
in
a
failing
grade
of
zero
(0).
2. The
poem
must
be
a
Shakespearean
sonnet
(FYI…the
sonnet
must
have
14
lines
).
3. The
student
will
have
approximately
5
minutes
to
recite
their
approved
poem
from
memory.
4. The
selected
poems
may
represent
the
student’s
choice,
but
must
be
suitable
for
presenta,on
in
class.
5. No
profanity
or
inappropriate
content
will
be
allowed.
6. Works
wriJen
by
the
student,
found
on
unit
outline,
or
in
the
textbook
are
not
acceptable
for
this
project.
7. Students
must
be
prepared
to
offer
a
short
explana,on
of
the
sonnet.
8. Before
the
recita,on,
students
must
present
the
,tle
of
the
sonnet,
the
author’s
name,
and
their
reason
for
selec,ng
the
piece
during
their
5
minutes.
9. IMPORTANT!!!!!!
Upon
the
assigned
date
of
the
recita,on,
students
MUST
present
a
RE-‐TYPED
copy
of
their
poem
with
a
rubric
aJached
to
it.
10. The
student
must
provide
a
detailed
TP-‐CASTT
analysis
and
annota,on
of
the
sonnet.
11. In
addi,on
to
selec,ng
a
sonnet,
students
must
also
provide
a
typed
analysis
commentary
that
analyzes
the
sonnet.

commentary

stapled

the
back
of

poem
and
should
be
at
LEAST
ONE
FULL
PAGE

analysis
commentary
should
analyze
the
poem
on
all
levels.
It
should
specifically
look
at
the
theme
of
the
piece
and
how
Shakespeare
uses
specific
devices
to
achieve
that
theme.
14. The
analysis
commentary
should
be
wriJen
in
the
two
to
three
chunk
paragraph
and
literary
analysis
format.
15. The
TP-‐CASTT
analysis
copy
of
the
poem
and
analysis
commentary
should
be
submiJed
with
the
student’s
name,
period,
and
due
date
neatly
wriJen
on
the
back.
