Mercyhurst is unique in many ways. One of the most unusual

differences at our college is how we break up the academic year. Instead
ofusing a semester system, we are on a term system. The difference being
that we have three 10 week terms instead of two 15-week terms.
You are saying "Yeah, so what?" Well, there are some very real and
fundamental problems with this system that seem to be ignored. 1**1
Take for example our recent Christmas vacation. It is about the same
one you got in high school-two and a half to three weeks. Those on the
semester systemtypicallyget four, fiveand even six weeks ofvacation.
m •

In this time many students go back to work and make money for books,
gifts or booze. Whatever they buy really does not matter, what matters %*1
Jam
is mat they have the opportunity to work and make money.
Those on the semester system also have more time to visit with family
and friends. They are not restrained by the obligation to shop for
Christmas gifts in Ja nuary, nor are they trying to get work done because
they are in the middle of a term.
We at Mercyhurst start our Winter term at the beginning of December
and continue for three weeks until we go home for "break." It is not
really a break. Professors and students alike have work to do. Whether
it is research or reading, some work needs to be done.
Not only are we constrained by time, work load and familial obliga-
tions, but upon returning we have to practically relearn what we did in
