satisfaction. And with the tools and technical support resources that Microsoft provides, you can
resolve issues quickly and efficiently, providing the superior service that increases customer loyalty.
The small business segment offers a great business opportunity for you as an ISV, and Microsoft
Dynamics Entrepreneur provides a solid platform for development. Expanding your business is
exciting and challenging. It helps to know that you are not alone. At every step, Microsoft resources
and programs are there to help you, and with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur you have a strong
partner by your side.

The Small Business Market

The growing small business market represents a large, untapped opportunity for you. According to a
2007 Gartner study, the enterprise resource planning (ERP) revenue in this segment is expected to
2
grow to approximately $700 million by 2010 in Europe alone. By focusing on this market, you can
take advantage of a unique opportunity to expand and grow your business. In this case, small
business can be big business.
The small business segment is generally characterized as a volume business, a characterization that
you need to consider when targeting this market. Building volume add-on solutions enables you to
penetrate a new market and increase your installed customer base quickly. Yet to reach the volume
necessary for your business to succeed in this market space, you need short sales cycles, easy and fast
implementation, and effective support.
Add-on solutions are ISV software products developed independently by a Microsoft Dynamics
Partner that are built to work with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur. When developing these business
solutions, remember that small business customers have limited resources and don't always realize the
value software can provide to their business. Therefore, they will not invest in products that require
long implementation and extensive training. Quick deployment and ease of use are key design criteria
for developing products that will appeal to the small business customer.
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is built with ease of use and rapid implementation in mind—and it
provides you with a fantastic opportunity to capitalize on an investment to create add-ons that
provide significant value to small businesses. As the business management solutions market continues
to grow, it makes good business sense to grow your business and profits at the same time—by
building add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur.

Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur

Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is an integrated business management solution developed
specifically to meet the needs of small businesses by helping companies run their most important
business areas—such as financial, purchase, inventory, and sales and marketing. Small businesses can
improve their efficiency and make confident decisions by focusing less on administrative tasks and
more on their business. Easy to use, it works like and with familiar software and solutions that most
small businesses already have —such as the Microsoft® Office system, Microsoft Office Outlook®, and
Microsoft SQL Server®.

Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur helps small businesses manage their most important business areas and integrates tightly with
familiar Microsoft products and technologies that they may already use.

Drive innovation
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur Solution offers a solid platform for ISVs to develop highly innovative
solutions. It provides an extensive, horizontal, and powerful ERP platform that enables you to focus on
the value-added functionality that provides the competitive differentiator for your ISV solution. Why
spend time, money, and effort developing complex business functionality, which is already present in
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, when you can focus on creating specialized add-on solutions to
extend your market reach?
There are two main types of add-on solutions; embedded and connecting. Embedded solutions are
fully integrated into the Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur base product. To develop fully embedded
add-on solutions, you need to register with Microsoft, so you can access the internal development
environment and application source code of Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur. Registration also
provides access to tools and functionality that help you to create truly integrated add-on solutions.
Connecting add-on software uses the available programming interface to read and write data to and
from the database. Connecting add-on software does not require registration.

DEVELOPING ISV SOLUTIONS FOR MICROSOFT DYNAMICS ENTREPRENEUR

Embedded and connecting ISV solutions interface differently with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur. Both offer your business a
great opportunity to expand your offerings to small business customers.

Building an embedded or connecting add-on solution enables you to take advantage of the ongoing
innovation delivered in Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur and its subsequent releases. Integration with
Microsoft technology helps mitigate the risk of your ongoing integration costs, and helps maximize
your overall investment in Microsoft technology. You can focus on your core areas of expertise instead
of repetitive development, which helps you to deliver a higher volume of innovative solutions.

Find new market opportunities and grow your customer base

Providing add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur offers a great opportunity for
expanding your reach in the small business market and expanding your customer base. Establishing a
successful presence in the small business segment will, in most cases, require a high volume of sales
and services and a substantial installed customer base.
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, with its two-tier distribution model, offers an excellent starting
point. As a provider of add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, you can benefit by
distributing your solutions by using our value-added distributors (VAD). If your product is embedded
with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur and sold as a packaged product, you are required to market
your solution through a VAD. ISVs creating connected solutions are not required to sell their products
through a VAD, but have the option to take advantage of this distribution channel. Selling through a
VAD frees you to focus on developing and maintaining your solution, while relying on the extensive
reseller network of the VAD to distribute your product. Without the hassle of managing your own
channel, you can expand your reach into new markets and quickly grow your installed base.

Generate new revenue and accelerate your sales cycle

Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur provides you with an excellent opportunity to attract new revenue
streams. Creating packaged solutions targeted at a specific industry or vertical enables you and your
VAD to provide out-of-the-box software that can dramatically reduce the sales cycle. Creating easy-
to-install, repetitive, and maintainable solutions helps reduce implementation time and accelerates
your business growth.
Because Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is built for a volume market, it provides you with the
platform and tools you need to create volume solutions. Providing resellers and customers with fully
integrated software that can be up and running quickly can help increase your customer base to the
7

level you want. Offering customers excellent support and service will provide you with a reliable
revenue stream that can help secure your business for the future.
Microsoft has been a well-known and trusted vendor in the small business space for many years. By
associating the Microsoft brand with your company, you can take advantage of this trust and
awareness. Providing integrated and packaged add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur
will enable you and your resellers to close deals faster by taking advantage of the overall Microsoft
marketing and sales campaigns. Microsoft and its VADs also offer a wide variety of tools and materials
to help you create your own scalable marketing activities, which can accelerate your sales cycle.
With its close integration to other Microsoft solutions, Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur also provides
you with the opportunity to sell to the large number of companies that already use Microsoft
products. You can increase your revenue and feel confident relying on a single, proven platform for
your add-on software.

Build customer loyalty

Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is built on the proven Microsoft Dynamics NAV platform, providing
customers with an easy upgrade path when they outgrow their small business solution. As business
needs increase and operations require more functionality, customers can move up in the Microsoft
Dynamics family to Microsoft Dynamics NAV. A straightforward upgrade path that accommodates
growth is a key benefit of Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur. The common code base and data model
shared by Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur and Microsoft Dynamics NAV enable you to create a
single add-on solution that works with two products. You can reach two market segments with
minimal overhead.
As a volume business, Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur gives you the opportunity to maintain a long
and profitable relationship with your customers and grow your own business. By providing support
and services—such as product upgrades or support hotlines—to a large number of customers, you
can sustain a constant stream of revenue and build the foundation to grow your business further. By
creating new versions of your add-on solution for upcoming releases of Microsoft Dynamics
Entrepreneur, you can propel your business into the future, and help secure high customer satisfaction
by being current.

Registering as an ISV
ISVs that want to create embedded add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, for
example industry-specific editions of the product, will in most cases require access to the internal
development environment and application source code of the solution. For ISVs to receive this access
as well as a wide variety of other benefits—such as access to in-depth technical documentation—both
the ISV and the add-on solution must register with Microsoft.
Connecting solutions, which use only the available interface technologies for interactions with
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, do not require registration, and do not need to fulfill any specific
requirements. However, this also means that ISVs creating connecting solutions will not receive access
to the benefits that registration provides.
Any member of the Microsoft Partner Program (MSPP) at the registered level or higher can become a
registered ISV and develop embedded add-on software for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur by
following these steps:

DEVELOPING ISV SOLUTIONS FOR MICROSOFT DYNAMICS ENTREPRENEUR

Create a business plan and connect with a local Microsoft subsidiary.
Creating successful add-on software for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur requires thorough analysis
and planning. To help you focus on creating a volume solution that can reach a broad market, you
should engage with your local Microsoft subsidiary before creating embedded add-on solutions.

Sign the Microsoft Dynamics ISV Developer Registration Agreement (ISV DRA).
This agreement registers you as a Microsoft Dynamics ISV and provides access to PartnerSource—an
internal site for Microsoft Dynamics partners and ISVs that contains a wide variety of information,
documentation, and product downloads. It is important to visit PartnerSource as soon as your access
has been set up, so you can find more detailed information and guidelines regarding the additional
add-on registration process that follows.

Sign the ISV DRA Add-on Addendum for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur.
This addendum gives you the right to develop embedded add-on solutions for Microsoft Dynamics
Entrepreneur. By signing the ISV DRA Add-on Addendum, you will receive a special development
license key that provides access to the internal development environment and application source code
of Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur.

Register the add-on application.

Registering an add-on solution provides you with a unique object range in which the solution can be
developed and avoids ―collision‖ with other third-party software. The registration also enables you to
receive sales statistics for your application, which gives you better insight into the distribution channel.

Finalize your solution.

After registering the add-on solution and receiving a unique object range and a developer license key,
you can finalize your embedded add-on software. There are multiple sources for development
information and support; you can access them on PartnerSource and MSDN.

Pass the Software Solution Test for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur.

Your completed add-on software must pass the Software Solution Test for Microsoft Dynamics
Entrepreneur. This testing helps ensure quality and provides customers with the confidence that the
solution can be easily installed, maintained, and upgraded.
When you have followed these steps, your registration is complete.

Distribution and Support

Succeeding in the small business segment requires a scalable distribution and support model. To meet
the needs of small and growing businesses, Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is distributed through a
two-tier model, with VADs responsible for providing the product to the market. Each VAD recruits,
activates, and supports a large channel of resellers, who, in turn, sell and implement the solution at
end-customer sites. Providing sales and marketing support for resellers and offering second-level
technical support to resellers and customers are just some of the tasks a VAD fulfills. With deep
knowledge of the local market and the needs and requirements of resellers, VADs represent a
powerful and scalable approach for providing Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur to the small business
segment.

VADs are responsible for:
- Building breadth channel
- Activating channel
- Supporting infrastructure that

- Recruiting VARs
- Supporting VARs
- Supporting customers
- Training VARs
- Providing marketing tools
to VARs
- Distributing embedded ISV
add-on solutions
VARs are responsible for:
- Providing sales and
implementation
- Providing support and service
to customers

The two-tier distribution model for Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur can handle hundreds of partners. VADs recruit and support
VARs who are responsible for sales and implementation and customer support and service.

The two-tier model also provides ISVs with a great opportunity to reach a large reseller network
without having the administrative tasks associated with managing a channel. Because VAD expertise
lies in managing channels, their involvement frees you to focus on the areas in which you excel—
developing and maintaining highly competitive solutions. By taking advantage of an already existing
reseller channel, you can reach many customers in a short period of time and ultimately support your
goal of expanding your customer base.
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur resellers don’t have development rights for the business solution, so
successful ISV add-on solutions must be designed to install without any customization. Embedded
add-on solutions are distributed as fully integrated and packaged solutions—including the base
product and add-on software—that are simple and quick to install and configure. For connecting add-
on solutions, you can work with a reseller by providing an installation and configuration option that
integrates with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur through the available interface technologies.
Because VADS are the only distributors of the Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur base product, ISVs
selling add-on software sold as a packaged product must enter into an agreement with a VAD and
establish distribution terms; Microsoft is not involved in this relationship. ISVs providing connecting
add-on solutions can sell their own solution through any channel they choose.

10

DEVELOPING ISV SOLUTIONS FOR MICROSOFT DYNAMICS ENTREPRENEUR

ISVs sell embedded add-on solutions as fully integrated, packaged solutions through VADs. Connecting add-on solutions can be
sold directly to customers or through the reseller channel.

It is up to you to decide which distribution option works best for you. Both approaches have their
advantages. The right choice depends on the type of add-on solution, the required degree of
integration, the nature of your business, and the size of the installed base you plan to achieve.

Engaging with a VAD

Microsoft is using the services of various VADs throughout the world to distribute Microsoft Dynamics
Entrepreneur. Depending on the type of add-on solution and your intended geographic coverage, you
should investigate closely which and how many VADs you want to engage. Some VADs focus on a
specific country, while others sell to entire regions. Microsoft recommends that you start engaging
with your potential VADs as early as possible in your development process to avoid delays or
unexpected issues. The VAD might also be able to assist you by providing valuable insight into the
product and your potential markets.
Although ISVs providing connecting add-on solutions are not required to distribute their product
through a VAD, in many cases you can benefit by working with a distributor. Having the VAD
recommend your solution to their reseller channel can be a great advantage. With a formal
relationship, you could even be able to extend distribution, so you can more easily reach the volume
necessary to drive business success.
To identify the right VAD and allow for a formal introduction, contact your local Microsoft subsidiary.
The Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur representative responsible for each region or country maintains
a close relationship with the VADs serving their area and can provide insight and assistance. The local
Microsoft subsidiaries can also become valuable consultants when you consider entering a market
with a specific business solution. Microsoft highly recommends that you contact the local Microsoft
Dynamics Entrepreneur representative before considering creating add-on software.

More points to consider

After identifying and establishing contact with a potential VAD, it's important to discuss the
distribution terms. Also, when you work with a VAD to distribute an embedded add-on solution, you
need a margin sharing agreement between you and the VAD. (Note that the distributor should invoice
the resellers for the combined solution to avoid multiple points of contact.) Both parties also need to
agree on the price of the add-on software and distribution costs. Microsoft is not involved in this
discussion; the agreement is solely between the VAD and the ISV. A distribution agreement should
also address a number of the following points.
11

PROVIDING ISV SOLUTIONS FOR MICROSOFT DYNAMICS ENTREPRENEUR

Support and updates
To achieve high customer satisfaction and loyalty, product support is crucial; ISVs and VADs need to
agree on how to facilitate assistance. Because customers and resellers generally prefer a single point
of contact when seeking support, ISVs and VADs have to consider this when creating a support plan.
VADs are required to offer support for the Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur base product, but it's up
to the ISV and VAD to define the support structure they want to use for their business solution. One
possibility for a support plan might be for the VAD to support the ISV solutions, which would require
the ISV to train the VAD's support personnel. Alternately, the VAD could reroute support requests
received from customers and resellers to the ISV.
ISVs and VADs also need to consider how they'll deliver product updates to the market. Microsoft
Dynamics Entrepreneur updates and patches are delivered to resellers directly through the distributor.
ISVs will benefit from an agreement in which the ISV integrates with the VAD’s process. Alternatively,
ISVs could send out updates directly to customers if those updates are easy to install.

Reseller Training
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur is designed to install and configure easily, without in-depth reseller
training. ISVs should follow the same approach when creating add-on software. Eliminating the need
for reseller training will not only reduce the implementation time but also the ramp-up time needed
for resellers to become familiar with your add-on solution. To produce and sell significant volume,
develop solutions that are well documented and can be set up quickly. For embedded add-on
business solutions, if you integrate the configuration process with the Microsoft Dynamics
Entrepreneur Setup Wizard, you can greatly reduce the implementation time. Also, consider providing
industry-specific, predefined configuration templates and easy to understand implementation guides
to help your customers use the product easily and reduce support calls.
In some cases specific reseller training might be inevitable, and ISVs should try to create scalable
training options. Remote and online courses have proven valuable, and VADs are often conducting
training classes with which you could potentially integrate your training.

Cooperating with other ISVs

When building industry-specific or vertical solutions, ISVs might find that the market requires
functionality that lies outside their immediate area of expertise. Instead of learning and creating such
functionality from scratch, consider integrating add-on solutions with other ISV add-on solutions that
already offer the required functionality. That way, each ISV can focus on their specific area of
excellence, address more requirements, and increase their installed base.
ISVs should agree on the terms and conditions of their cooperation. It is especially important that
parties involved agree about who is ultimately responsible for the combined business solution. It's not
only customers and resellers who prefer to deal with one party—VADs, too, should only interact with
and receive support from one source. To simplify coordination between ISVs and to provide support
for their combined solution, some Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur partners and VADs offer specific
build centers to help ensure proper functionality.

Build Centers
In some regions, ISVs can take advantage of special development services provided by skilled
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur partners or VADs. These build centers can help you to merge your
add-on solution with Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur, including integrating the configuration
process with the Setup Wizard and combining multiple add-on solutions. Some build centers might
even offer to provide support for your solution. Build centers can help you focus on your key areas of
expertise by assisting you with the tasks that can distract from developing a competitive product. ISVs

12

DEVELOPING ISV SOLUTIONS FOR MICROSOFT DYNAMICS ENTREPRENEUR

interested in this option should contact their local Microsoft subsidiary to request information about
available build centers.

Own ISV reseller channel

ISVs might want to develop highly specialized solutions that require specially trained resellers. In this
case, it is possible for ISVs to use their own reseller channel. The VAD will mainly act as the facilitator,
managing license sales, whereas the ISV and its resellers will be responsible for product sales and
implementation.

Conclusion
ISVs often face multiple challenges as they look for ways to expand their business and secure future
growth. Microsoft has proven to be a valuable partner in overcoming these challenges with innovative
solutions that provide a solid platform for development. Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur continues
this trend—it can provide you with a great opportunity to expand your market reach and establish a
foothold in the small business market. Building a volume business can be a daunting task, but with
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur and its scalable distribution model, you have a strong partner by
your side.
Developing your add-on solution on the proven Microsoft Dynamics NAV platform enables you to
focus on your key areas of expertise and helps you to deliver superior add-on solutions while keeping
your investments low. Taking advantage of the two-tier distribution model can help you build your
customer base quickly and generate new streams of revenue. With the Microsoft brand and marketing
engine behind the product, as well as the sales services provided by our VADs and resellers, you can
reduce your sales cycle and reach the volumes you need. Finally, by providing updated versions of
your add-on business solutions for upcoming releases of Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur or
extending your solutions to work with Microsoft Dynamics NAV, you can increase customer
satisfaction and build long-lasting, profitable business relationships that support your business now
and in the future.
With a huge market opportunity and a product that meets the immediate needs of small businesses
across multiple industries, ISVs have a lot to gain from developing add-on business solutions for
Microsoft Dynamics Entrepreneur. Connect with your local Microsoft subsidiary to discuss your ISV
opportunity—and start expanding your business today.
