Research And Teaching Assistant
I served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Principles of Macroeconomics cour
se offered at the University of Florida to more than 1,100 students each semeste
r.
I was responsible for proctoring exams, writing test questions, tutoring student
s who came by for help, answering questions concerning logistical matters regard
ing the course, entering student's grades into an Excel spreadsheet, reviewing s
tudent complaints of receiving an incorrect grade or of a poorly worded exam que
stion.
I had to think outside the box, communicate ideas clearly, and develop plans cus
tom tailored to the individual student or students.
My job was to help students see the underlying relations that exist in a complex
modern economy. Exports and imports are related to the value of the dollar, the
value of the dollar to the Federal Funds rate (the interest rate) and changes i
n government spending. In turn, those two are related to the rate of inflation,
which is related to the value of the dollar, and back around to exports and impo
rts. I had to make these relations clear while holding the student's attention.

Research Assistant
As a research assistant (RA), I was required to gather, analyze, interpret, and
input data on a variety of subjects.
For example, I was asked to determine if per-person (per-capita) public capital
spending (government spending on roads, schools, police/fire, etc.) kept pace wi
th demand for public goods if a state experienced an abnormally high population
growth rate over several years. Did private firms appear to keep pace during rap
id population growth?
This assignment required that I pick a period long enough so that any trend in t
he data would show up. I chose five years: 1998-2002. I had to get population da
ta on each state for each of these years, determine a rate of population growth
"high enough" relative to that of other states', which meant expressing 5 years
of population growth at an annualized rate for each state.
Once I could see which states grew much faster than others, I had to find data o
n public and private capital spending for those states. Those spending levels ha
d to be "deflated" to the year 1998. That is, the amount spent on capital in 200
1 needed to be comparable to the amount spent on capital in 1998.
Once capital spending could be compared across time I had to make it comparable
across space by dividing a state's capital spending by its population.
The end statistic is per-capita public (or private) capital spending in thousand
s of 1998 dollars for each year 1998 to 2001 in each of the eleven states determ
ined to have had abnormally high rates of population growth.
My research has included analyzing gasoline excise tax competition, transportati
on issues, pedestrian safety, the Florida education finance program, use of prop
erty taxes to fund programs at the county level, and Florida counties' discretio
n to set different property tax rates.

the country in question. Prepared briefing papers regarding the IMF's assessmen
