Elementary.
“The joy that I have had here

began Superintendent Parker.
While this was not her good-
bye, Superintendent Parker
stated that “a goodbye speech
will be coming.”
She described the Union-
ville-Chadds Ford community
as a “wonderful place that
demands the fullest energy.”

each person who spoke of her

Censorship defies educational goals

“All the news that’s fit to print” is the motto of one of the nation’s most prestigious newspapers, The New
York Times. However, many school newspapers, especially those censored under prior review, are not afforded
the luxury to cover “all the news” in their publications.
Supporters of prior review claim that this system does not interfere with students’ constitutional rights, but
rather ensures that students are abiding by proper operational guidelines.
In cases where infractions of the law or of a school newspaper’s approved statement of policy occur, school
administrators have the right to edit illegal content. This being said, school administrators very rarely use
prior review to combat bad journalism. Rather, prior review becomes a tool for censoring critical content.
For instance, Aurora, Colorado’s Overland High School’s newspaper, The Scout, covered a story about a
student’s untimely death due to a blood clot that traveled to his lungs after he broke his ankle at a wrestling
match. As reported in The Huffington Post by attorney Adam Goldstein, the article printed in The Scout was
censored on the sole basis of a principal’s paranoia. The principal claimed that the story could not run because
the writers had incorrectly listed the student’s cause of death. Even after the journalists produced a copy of

Disrespect on all sides disgraces student-teacher relationships

Teacher Irene could not have taught her
students a more valuable lesson. “R-E-S-
P-E-C-T.” Sadly, it appears that the current
students of Unionville have failed to inter-
nalize her message.
In the past few weeks I have noticed a
sudden onslaught of disrespectful behav-
iors related to student-teacher interactions.
Not only are students acting inappropri-
ately towards teachers, teachers are even
disrespecting students.
It’s no surprise that by the time the school
year comes to a close, especially for seniors
whose senioritis is full-fledged, students
have an utter lack of work ethic. However,
not wanting to do work need not also in-
volve the insolent treatment of educators.
It seems, however, that Unionville students
and seniors in particular fail to understand
this ideology. On more occasions than I
can count, a student has acted in a deplor-
able manner towards his or her teacher,
including pulling unwarranted pranks
and refusing to take responsibility for their
interference with the educational process.
Would such a person want to be treated
in the same manner? Thus, rule number
one – respect a teacher’s classroom and
the teaching environment.
I often walk into a class when a teacher
is handing back an assignment or giving
important instructions. At the same time,
I look around and notice students talking
to their friends, students half asleep (or in
some cases, fully incoherent), students do-
ing work that is not pertinent to the current
class, or even some students listening to
music or texting.
Would those people do the same if the
speaker were a professional athlete or
world-renowned movie star? Every human
deserves to be listened to and to be treated
with respect. Perhaps most seniors don’t
see a problem with being disrespectful to
their teachers because they prescribe to
the oft-heard mantra, “who cares, we’re
almost done anyway.” No philosophy could
be more inaccurate. Teachers put their
blood, sweat, and tears (excuse the cliché)
into their jobs, and the least they can ask
is that students respect them. I’m not say-
ing that everyone needs to transform into
the ultimate student or that one must like
his or her teacher; I am simply asking the
student body to take a brief look at how it
is treating its faculty and make a change for
the better. Thus, rule number two – give
everybody, students and teachers, the
respect they deserve.
I have also noticed an elevated amount
of disrespect for students coming from
teachers. To be frank, this is likely the result
of how the students treat said teachers. If
students treat their elders with respect the
teachers will do the same for their pupils.
No teacher wants to be mean, but when
students fail to listen to a single direction
and begin inhibiting the learning of other
students, something must be done to right
the problem and, sometimes, this devolves
into degrading treatment of students. With
teachers under continually growing pres-
sure, making sure as much information as
possible is taught by the last day of school
is essential to job security. As the adults in
the school, it is the teachers’responsibilities
to take the high road and be the voice of
change. Making condescending or bla-
tantly offensive remarks about students
to students is uncalled for.
Once again, if a teacher desires to be
treated with basic respect, he or she must
treat the students with the same respect.
However, it is my belief that if students
change their ways and start living by

a happier place and student-teacher inter-
actions will become simple pleasantries,
as opposed to the status quo. Thus rule
number three – treat others with respect
and you will be respected in return.
In the words of Jackie Robinson, “I’m
not concerned with your liking or disliking
me... All I ask is that you respect me as a
human being.”

Natural disasters can strike at any
moment. Depending on one’s location
in the world, some people are more
likely to be directly affected than others.
However, as a country, we cannot just
ignore these events and move on with
our lives. As shown by the recent torna-
does and hurricanes, most Americans
are not ready for the natural disasters
that hit the United States. It’s simple to
conclude, therefore, that residents of
other nations are not prepared for such
devastating events as well.
On March 11th, Japan was struck with
an 8.9 magnitude earthquake. The earth-
quake tore apart Japan’s infrastructure,
destroyed more than 5,000 homes and
more than 300,000 Japanese had to be
evacuated. Additionally, nuclear power
plants were damaged and consequential
radiation has been an immense worry for
the people in the area. In my opinion,
no one could hear this news and not be
moved to help.
It is our duty as humans to help our
fellow humans and assist when such a
tragedy as the combined natural disas-
ters in Japan strikes. It may seem like
one donation would not actually make
an impact on any, but that is not true.
Every volunteer who goes to Japan and
every donation made makes a differ-
ence. Within 4 days of the earthquake,
for example, the Red Cross donated
over $10,000,000 to efforts in Japan.
But it is not just the sole responsibility
of individuals and organizations to help
those in need.
Many more lives could be saved if do-
nations were made on an international
level. The United States’ government
does not hesitate to borrow trillions of
dollars from China to help our economic
crisis. Now, with people suffering in the
midst of a real-life nightmare, our gov-
ernment could not, in good conscious,
do nothing to help.
Japan and the United States have a
very close alliance. The Red Cross says
that after Hurricane Katrina destroyed
New Orleans in 2005, the Japanese
government and Japanese businesses,
with the help of the United Nations, do-
nated over $13,000,000. These numbers
are more than just numbers; they feed
the starving people in parking lots, put
families in shelters, and give a second
chance to those who were unlucky to be
in the wrong place at the wrong time. We
cannot expect Japan to help us with our
problems in the future if we do not help
them in their time of need now.
Here at Unionville, the Interact Club
raised over $1,000 dollars in their T-Shirt
Sale for Japan. Small actions by indi-
viduals, like buying a t-shirt or sending a
donation, really could change someone’s
life. When everyone teams up to help in
a disastrous situation, great outcomes
can occur, and that is why the United
States owes it to the Japanese to aid in
their struggle to rebuild.

Japan have shaken a sense of duty into
citizens around the world, including the
student body here at UHS.
The fundraising, donations, and sales
are all part of a valiant effort to send
as much help as possible to victims of
Japan’s tragic natural disaster.
Very few, if any, would dispute the
need and importance of these collec-
tions, as they not only aid the needy, but
show our devotion and support as well.
The issue, however, arises on the

ernment does not have the financial
capability to send money.
The recent budget cuts, affecting our
school system as well as other crucial
government funded programs, are a
tribute to the unfortunate truth: our
government cannot afford to help Japan.
The federal government’s focus must
be on pulling America out of the current
recession, and only then can it seek to
help others financially.
Of course, sending aid to the Japanese
people is the right thing to do; however, it
requires resources that our government
is simply lacking.
Our massive debt to other countries
has left us with almost no finances to
spare. In order to attain the finances
needed to send a significant amount
overseas, taxes would have to be raised,
only leading to the devastation of our
own citizens.
The best way to send aid to Japan
is through individual collections and
funding, which there is no lack of here
at Unionville. Students are working as
best they can to raise money and col-
lect whatever provisions possible for
the victims.
Our focus as a nation should be the
individual collections that are sent over-
seas, not the aid funded by the federal
government.
Another important factor to con-
sider is that oftentimes money from the
government does not always reach its
destination. So, tax dollars being paid to
the government to aid Japan might not
even be used for their intended purpose.
It is our responsibility as people of
the world to help the victims in Japan,
but we must do so in our own way- not
by using money that our government
cannot afford to spend.
Individual donations to Japan are not
simply about a government sending aid,
but rather, about something much bet-
ter: people helping other people.

Students lose in battle between School Board and UCFEA

Dear Editor,
For much of the school year, students have
been subject to the petty politics between
our school board and the Unionville-Chadds
Ford Education Association.
In their negotiations for a contract, the
UCFEA has employed such appropriate
measures as sending word out through the
community regarding their position, putting
signs on their cars, standing outside the
school building in the morning with signs,
and independently hiring a lead negotiator.
Unfortunately, some of their other tactics to
force the issue have poisoned their good
name and have actually driven many com-
munity members away from their cause.
First and foremost, let me stress that I fully
support the UCFEA’s cause. Many family
members of mine are teachers and I cannot
point to a single teacher in the high school
whose hard work and personality would not
potentially earn them more than double
their current salary in the private sector.
That being said, I am unable to wrap my
head around the idea that all of the nego-

are true to their motto of “For the good of
the student.”

of one of Unionville’s most
respected staff members.
After working at Unionville
for 24 years, Dr. Frank Deady
will retire from his position as
a high school counselor.
Dr. Deady began working at
Unionville in 1987.
He had previously worked at
Bishop Shanahan; he first con-
sidered joining the Unionville
staff when he met track coach

Unionville! Can you believe
it--summer is almost here?!
As this year comes to a close,
I hope you are feeling happy-
-especially you, seniors.
I hope you have enjoyed
your time at Unionville and
are feeling excited for what
lies ahead.
With a year of university
under my belt now, I’d like
to offer you this advice as
you enter college life: talk to
strangers.
I know it contradicts one
of the fundamental rules of
our childhoods, but trust me
on this one.
I promise you that it will be
easy to do, because there is
this fantastic and wild phe-
nomenon that occurs during
the first month of university:
everyone is friendly.
Each mundane event--an
elevator ride, standing in
line at the book store, even
waiting for the cross-walk
light to change--becomes an
opportunity to make a friend.
Take a second to think
about the last time you
made a new friend. How
often does that happen? In
high school, not very much.
You’re surrounded by the
people who you’ve known
most of your life; everyone
has their established place
in the social realm.
But when you get to col-
lege, nobody knows anyone.
You’re all in the same boat--
in a new place and eager to
make friends.
Ever y day for the first
month of freshman year,
everyone is willing to talk to
anyone--you sit down next to
someone on a bench outside
your dorm and ten minutes
later you’re getting lunch
together. It’s like magic!
Take advantage of this
time and introduce yourself
to as many people as you
can. Embrace the freedom
from cliques and the chance
to be whoever you want to
be to each new person you
meet. Soak it up, because
this honeymoon period is
ephemeral.
After the first month, peo-
ple start to form groups of
friends. This is inevitable--it’s
human nature to want to feel
like you belong to a small
community. People are quick
to latch onto other people
and make themselves a spot
in a group that fits into the
student body.
One of the most valuable
lessons I have learned from
this, and college life in gen-
eral, is not to let my friendli-
ness fade.
Throughout the year, con-
tinue to say “hi” to new
people; you never know what
might come of it.
Some of my best friends
at school are people who
I just happened to start a
conversation with randomly.
I went on a camping trip with
a group of other freshman at
my school before the school
year began.
Through keeping in touch
with my trip leader, I ended
up becoming involved with
a program that took me to
Panama over winter break
to build water filters and
eco-stoves.
While I was in Panama, I
met another college student
from Indiana, who intro-
duced me to another woman
with whom I am now plan-
ning a service trip to Brazil.
This whole series of in-
teractions has taught me
that talking to strangers is a
great way to learn about all
of the opportunities that are
out there.
College is a place to meet
people and network. For all
you know, the person you
study French with might
become the person you start
a small business with. Keep
an open mind about what
may develop from a first
encounter.
I’d like to take this chal-
lenge one step further: talk
to people you normally
would not.
College is the ultimate time
to do this--I feel like I will
never again in my life be sur-
rounded by people from so
many different backgrounds.
Not everyone you talk to
will become your friend, but
hopefully from each encoun-
ter you will learn something
new. And that’s what college
is all about, right?
So friends, say “hi”, and
keep saying “hi.” And, of
course, if you see me when
I’m home for break, you can
expect to hear a “hello!”

Secure a date with this fail-safe guide to Prom

Prom: not just one night, but a
three-month phenomenon. It is
a plague that has infected every
student – yes, even the boys love
to talk about the epic night as it
approaches.
The prospects of Prom capti-
vate lunch conversations across
the cafeteria as early as the
beginning of the spring sports
season.
Questions from “What does
your dress look like?” to “Which
limo are you going in?” to “Are
you going to After Prom?” can be
heard echoing throughout the
hallways. However, the biggest
question lingering on the tip of
every girl’s tongue – How did he
ask you?
For the sake of Prom-enthusi-
asts throughout the school, we
have compiled a list of some of
the best “Prom Askings” to be ad-
mired and judged by all students.
We have not revealed our
sources so as to protect the
creative genius of the bold
gentlemen who undertook such
gallant measures to secure the
acceptance of their dates. Most
of these boys were juniors and
seniors, so freshman and sopho-
more boys, take notes!
The gentlemen who can mus-
ter enough courage to publically
ask their dream dates to Prom are
few and far between.
However, if you believe you fall
within this daring category, we
recommend that you keep the
asking quick and humorous in
order to eliminate some of the
pressure placed on the girl as
everyone in the vicinity awaits
her response.
For instance, stay away from
mushy ballads performed in
public places; they are embar-
rassing for both you and
your prospective date.
Instead, replace this pos-
sibly horrifying moment
with a much better surprise
– like having her discover
you on the roof of her car in
the school parking lot with
“Prom?” scrawled across
your chest.
The humor in this tactic
replaces awkwardness with
laughs, and will be sure to
win you a “yes.”
If you aren’t comfortable
going this far out on a limb,
don’t fret. Rather, stick to
the more traditional (but still
exciting) technique of asking her
over the school loudspeakers at
lunch or even over the school
T.V. station.
For boys who are a bit more
timid and want nothing to do
with a public display of affection,
remember that, just as with any
guy, the way to a girl’s heart can
be through her stomach!
Using food to ask a girl to Prom
offers endless possibilities. You
could prepare an assemblage of
her favorite snacks to show that
you care before asking.
Or, follow the example of The
Princess Diaries and ask her with
a pizza adorned with candy spell-
ing out “Prom?”
The fail safe method, of course,
would be to ask the girl with
chocolate – preferably some-
thing that also spells out “Prom”

or has a Prom theme. Any food
options are sweet, caring ways
of asking a girl to the dance,
but remember that the food is
inevitably less exciting than the
request.
If you’re not one for acting
romantic and haven’t the faint-
est idea what your prospective
date’s favorite foods are, that
doesn’t mean you’ve run out of
options.
Instead, you can choose to
make your request an adventure
in itself. Such “fun askings” usu-
ally include everyday products
you can buy at the Dollar Store.

loons with confetti in her room or
ambushing her with Silly String
will work best for a surprise-
oriented scheme.
Another possible option
would be hiding a written
Prom request somewhere
unexpected, like in her
cereal box or in a fortune
cookie.
Some of the most memo-
rable askings were those
that were slightly more
elaborate and obviously
took some careful planning.
For instance, putting a
note on her car telling her
to meet you somewhere
(where, unbeknownst to
her, you will be waiting
with a bouquet of flowers)
ensures that you’ll be a
fun date for the impending
dance.
Another fun option is incon-
spicuously leaving an ice-block
and hammer at her front door
with the message “use me to
break the ice” written on the
hammer. Once she does, a mes-
sage reading, “Now let’s heat
things up. Prom?” inside the ice
shows you are both interesting
and romantic.
Otherwise, spelling out Prom
in an arrangement of items is
usually a safe method to try.
For creativity, use any wacky
item you can think of, from glow
sticks to tennis balls – whatever
will personalize the asking for
you and your date.
However you choose to do
it, such personalization is the
key for elevating a pleasant
surprise to an “aww”-inspiring
proposition.
The mother of all “prom ask-
ings,” however, is the scavenger
hunt.
While this option has become
cliché, a scavenger hunt that is
personalized is a classic that no
doubt will please your date.
The chief excitement in this
method is making it unique for
you and your date, so stay away
from the various generic scaven-
ger hunts online.
Instead, stick to referencing
inside jokes or movies and music
that you both like. You could even
take her to the place where you
first met.
Making such a complex hunt
may be time consuming, but it
helps make the asking process
entertaining and can show
your appreciation for the girl’s
personality.
Now that Prom is only a hop
and a skip around the corner,
we hope this advice will come in
handy for all next year’s nervous

LCD Soundsystem, the

discovered a novel way to
conclude a career: finishing
on top. After releasing three
critically acclaimed albums,
including the 2007 dance-
rock classic Sound of Silver,
and helping to define the
independent music scene
for the last decade, Murphy
decided to pull the plug on
his most famous project in a
spectacular fashion.
In February, he announced
one final show at New York’s
Madison Square Garden on
April 2 and four more shows
to occur during the preced-
ing week at a smaller nearby
venue, Terminal 5.
