Professional Experience

PROSTRAKAN GMBH, STARNBERG (near Munich), GERMANY 06/05 - Present

German subsidiary of a UK-based specialist pharmaceutical company.
Managing Director (Geschftsfhrer), Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Reporting to President of Global Commercial Operations
Invited to set-up the German business by the then VP of Global
Commercial Operations after having been a license partner while at
Fujisawa (I had secured the pan-European rights to a dermatology
product from then Strakan). I played a key role in the acquisition of
APS-Pharma by ProStrakan which was the basis of the German business
for the first 2 years. I took-over the business and grew sales by 28%
in the first year and completed the integration into the ProStrakan
organization. I continued to prepare the organisation for the
integration of 4 new products from HQ. Developed company and product
marketing strategies, set-up sales and marketing teams and formed
strategic alliances to ensure successful product launches in Germany,
Austria and Switzerland. I also divested non-core products to other
companies. We achieved double-digit growth each year and
(over)achieved profit targets. Achieved break-even on schedule in
2009.
* Took over and stabilized declining business of acquired company
and formed a profitable subsidiary with double-digit growth.
Changed the business model from a low-priced generics and
OTC-company to an innovative nich products company focused on
hospital and office based specialist target groups.
* Managed successful launch of 4 core products in the areas of
Urology, Gastroenterology, Anaesthesia and Oncology Supportive
Care (breakthrough pain) incl. set-up of sales teams.
* Negotiated strategic alliances to increase sales and penetration
of local and corporate products.
* Initiated clinical studies and investigator driven trials to
support marketing of key products.
* Identified and managed the in-licensing of local and multi-country
Business Development targets.
* Divested non-core products to increase cash-flow for the
organisation.
* Negotiated rebate contracts with insurance companies as well as
distribution agreements.
* Key Figures: Sales: Initially EUR2.5 (2005) increasing to EUR10
mill. (2009) / P+L: EUR4 mill. / HR: 35 HCs
FUJISAWA EUROPE, MUNICH GERMANY (3 Positions from 07/99 to 05/05)
Fujisawa Europe was the European Headquarters of a global leader in
the development and sales of treatments for organ transplantation and
other immune disorders. At the time, sales in Europe were approx. $600
mill. Since then, Fujisawa merged with Yamanouchi to become Astellas.
Director, Corporate Development Fujisawa Europe 11/03 - 05/05
Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, HR and Administration
After turning the GM-Scandinavia position down (see below), I was
asked by the CEO to establish the European Business Development
function, identifying and securing new product license opportunities
for the European operations and supporting the Japanese BD-function. I
Developed and implemented plans for the strategic development of the
European business, including subsidiary infrastructure planning, as
well as in-license and alliance strategies to optimize future sales
and profitability of the region. I directed and co-ordinated the
European corporate planning processes. I also provided a management
oversight function for Corporate Governance Issues and continued to
manage corporate- and product-related PR, including website
development, as well as internal communications. I set up a new
marketing intelligence department which, on the one hand, was
responsible for all M.I. and market research activities concerning
business development opportunities but also supported marketing with
M.R. and market access services for new and launched products. I was
made a Member and Secretary of the Management Committee and was also
named the regional leader and spokesperson for the Global Business
Development Team.
* Successfully concluded 3 deals in the dermatology area (Acne,
Onychomycosis and Genital Warts/Actinic Keratosis).
* Streamlined strategic planning and subsidiary budget processes,
enabling the Management Committee to make educated decisions on
infrastructure, marketing and clinical expenses with an increased
level of relevant information in a reduced time-period.
* Developed and implemented a Crisis Management Plan and
co-ordinated crisis management procedures as they related to the
media/press for European HQ and its subsidiaries. Media
spokesperson for Europe.
* Key Figures: P+L: EUR2 mill. / HR: 7 HCs
