Milana

 Health  Outcomes  Survey

The  Milana  Health  Outcomes  Survey  (HOS)  is  a  comprehensive  ongoing  project  that  measures
the  effects  that  improvements  in  healthcare  have  on  a  range  of  areas.  This  includes  changes  in
economic  costs  for  households,  worker  productivity  and  reliability,  school  attendance  rates,
and  changes  in  overall  health  outcomes.

Objectives:

Creating  a  strong  metrics  program  for  our

health  clinic.

This  research  project  enables  us  to  see

the  exact  impacts  of  the  work  that  we  do.  It  will
show  us  how  successful  our  efforts  have  been
and  in  exactly  what  areas,  and  it  will  also  show
us  if  our  efforts  have  largely  been  unsuccessful.
It  will  enable  us  to  make  informed  decisions
about  modifying  or  cancelling  various  aspects  of
the  work  we  do  with  creating  healthcare  access.

Gathering  information  on  the  demographics  of

the  area.

The  Milana  HOS  gives  us  quantitative

data  on  the  composition  of  households,  ages,
occupations,  education  levels,  and  income
levels.  Further  insight  is  gained  by  looking  at  the
correlations  between  each,  such  as
understanding  the  impact  of  education  in  the
community  by  correlating  education  levels  to
types  of  occupations  and  income  levels.

Understanding  the  health  situation  in  the  villages  prior  to  beginning  our  work.

This  project  measured  the  prevalence  of  sicknesses,  symptoms,  duration,  presence  of
chronic  conditions,  and  frequency  that  treatment  was  sought.  The  Milana  HOS  also  did  a
snapshot  look  of  health  conditions  in  the  villages  in  one  day;  this  data  was  compared  to  values
given  by  villagers  about  their  health  over  time  to  see  how  well  both  sets  of  data  align.

Measuring  economic  costs  associated  with  health  issues  prior  to  beginning  our  work.

The  Milana  HOS  measured  the  amount  of  days  of  work  missed  by  an  individual  due  to  a
sickness  or  chronic  condition,  as  well  as  number  of  days  missed  by  their  family  members.
Values  were  obtained  for  number  of  days  worked  per  month  and  average  daily  salary,  so  HOS
provided  comprehensive  information  on  wages  lost  due  to  poor  health.  Other  criteria
measured  included  amount  of  money  and  time  spent  on  travel  for  healthcare,  doctor’s  fees,
and  medications  if  care  was  indeed  sought.

Measuring  changes  in  all  categories  after  our  primary  care  clinic  opened.

The  Milana  HOS  2010  provided  all  of  the  information  prior  to  our  healthcare
intervention  occurring  as  mentioned  above.  HOS  2011  is  a  slightly  modified  version  of  HOS
2010’s  comprehensive  survey  that  will  measure  all  the  changes  after  the  clinic  opened.  HOS
2011  is  scheduled  to  be  started  and  completed  late  May  into  early  June  of  2011,  the  same  time
period  that  HOS  2010  was  completed  the  year  prior.

Methods:

Milana’s  Health  Outcomes  Survey  collected  data  in  the  Mathpally,  Hanmanagar,  and  Medinapur
villages  of  the  Medak  district,  all  villages  that  are  currently  served  by  Milana’s  primary  care
clinic.  A  control  group  of  villages  was  established  approximated  20  kilometers  from  Milana’s
group  of  vilages,  where  data  was  also  collected.  HOS  2011  will  repeat  data  collection  in  both
groups  of  villages  and  any  natural  changes  in  conditions  will  be  corrected  for  by  data  from  the
baseline  villages.  The  surveys  for  HOS  2010  were  carried  out  by  survey  administrators  from
Hyderabad  trained  by  Milana,  and  surveys  for  HOS  2011  will  be  given  by  a  similar  group  of
trained  survey  administrators.
