Spices
With different climates in different parts of the country, India produces a
variety of spices, many of which are native to the Subcontinent, while
others were imported from similar climates and have since been
cultivated locally for centuries.
Spices are aromatic flavourings that come from parts of plants. The term
spice also usually includes herbs. Spices and herbs have long been used
to both preserve and enhance the flavour of food. They are made from
seeds, bark, roots, resins, and buds of plants. Some people like to eat
their spices fresh, while other spices are dried and stored for later. Spices
can be described as hot, pungent, tangy, and sweet. An example of a hot
spice is black pepper, while an example of a sweet spice is fennel seeds.
Asafoetida is a pungent spice, while ground ginger is a representative of a
tangy spice.

OVERVIEW:
Section starts with Whole spices, followed by powders and ends
with Readymixes
The relative margin earned in readymixes is more than that of the whole
or powdered spices. So, from business point of view we need to focus on
the category. Whole spices are majorly our growth drivers with high level
of engagement involved.
WHOLE SPICES:
Small pack articles to be placed at eye level:
Small pack articles are suggested to be placed at shelves which are easily
reachable to the customer (an average height lady). Generally these
articles are high margin and high value earning items.
The routine buying items like cumin whole, mustard whole etc generally
pull less margin for the category but are at top prority in the shopping list
of a customer. Thereby suggesting at these articles should necessarily be
present at the stores.
All voluminous items like tej patta, tamarind, kopra whole or garlic whole
occupy good shelf space hence they should be placed at the lower most
shelves of the whole spices bay.
READYMIXES:
• Horizontal brand (Everest, MDH, MTR etc) blocks and vertical variant
(chole masala, chana masala, chat masala etc) blocks.
• Sub category to start with the top brands of the highest community.
• Variant brands to follow the regional brands
• More popular brands should be placed at the lower shelves. Minority
community hits to be given eye-level.
Alligators are suggested to place voluminous items like tej patta, kopra,
garlic or larger packs of fast moving articles.
OTHERS:
Apart from these regular merchandise categories other articles which
have a connect with the spices category are also suggested to be placed
in the spices section itself. As far as possible at least three shelves need
to be dedicated to the brands. These brands are:
