Fantastic four
Four cadets, Flight Sergeant
Langford, Corporal Daker,
Corporal Reid and Cadet
Ellison, recently took part in the
Merseyside Wing Adventure
Training Exercise Competition.
This is a highly regarded annual
competition within the Air Training
Corps and the cadets take part in
several areas of training within the
competition.
Firstly, they took part in the navigation part of the exercise in last position, but did such
a fantastic job and came in first (with plenty of time to spare!). They also took part in
climbing, canoeing, camp craft, archery, a kit check and also an exam on navigation
and equipment. The guys did extremely well, especially since they were a very
young team and came home with silver medals. We came 3rd last year, a very well
deserved 2nd this year – only pipped to the post by 2 points – there’s only one way to
go! Congratulations also goes to Cpl Reid who was succeeded in being picked for the
Regional Adventure Training Exercise Competition team.
If you’re between 13 and 18 years of age and would like to take part in activities like
the above among other things, we meet on a Tuesday and Thursday night (7pm-
9.40pm), Tanks Field, Church Lane, Neston.

Crazy
day at
school

The children of St
Winefride’s RC School,
in Little Neston, held
a Go Crazy for CAFOD Day recently. They were invited to come into school,
wearing crazy clothes or sporting crazy hair styles.
The ‘Go Crazy Day’ was combined with a Skipathon or sponsored skip.
Throughout the day all the children and their teachers took part, skipping
individually or as a group skip. The children of Year 5 and 6 kicked off the event
with a ‘countdown’ on the playground, and the skipathon continued without a
break until the end of the day.
So far the combined events have raised over £360, which is being split between
CAFOD and the Good Shepherd Appeal (Children’s Charity).

Neston film-makers show
a greener way of living
In November 2010 Neston-
based Chat Noir Productions
Ltd, won a commission to
produce a video for Cheshire
West and Chester Council on
the subject of sustainability.
The purpose of the video was
not only to highlight initiatives
supported throughout the
Borough, but also to show Council
employees the many schemes
already being run internally by the
Council.
With full creative control over the video,
Chat Noir Productions gave
it the tone and feel of a
broadcast commercial, rather
than a standard promotional
video.
To show the breadth of
schemes in place, filming took
place across the Borough, at
Winsford Council Buildings,
All Saints Primary School in
Saughall, Chester Town centre
as well as closer to home at
Neston Market.
Chat Noir’s in-house team then used
state of the art special effects to give
the video a fluid and dynamic style,

computer animation.
The video has been very well received
at Council screenings and has
already generated debate and
conversation, which was always the
desired intention.

OUR President is doing an abseil down one of the Mersey Tunnel ventilation
towers on Sunday, 19th June, in aid of BIRD (Brain Injury Rehabilitation and
Development) a local charity. She will be doing the abseil
with her son.
Mark and Carole Philpot were our speakers at our
meeting on 20 April and they gave a talk on Antarctica
(the White Continent). They first of all gave a short
talk on their trip and told us about the wildlife they had
seen. They showed us a mock up of an Albatross with its
enormous wing span. An afternoon tea was held on 25th April and the meeting
in May was the resolutions meeting followed by a demonstration by a former
chef - Daniel Dawson.

Fiction: Smut by Alan Benett

A new book for Alan Bennett’s many fans. Written
much in the style of ‘Talking Heads’ this little
hardback book contains 2 ‘unseemly’ stories
concerning women in middle life. There is Mrs
Donaldson whom sex takes by surprise, and then
there’s Mrs Forbes , who‘s not surprised at all. Full
of the sort of gems we have come to expect from
Alan Bennett, wonderful quotes such as: “One
does not have to be in the forefront of the struggle
for women’s rights to find Betty’s decision to marry
Graham deplorable. She wasn’t wholly infatuated,
though she liked the way he looked; but, so too
did he and that unfatuated her a bit.” Good fun,
very light but carefully written- would make a great
present.
