The foundation stone at Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital was laid by the Late Prime Minister
Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru in November 1950, and the hospital opened its doors to its first patient in
May 1951.The hospital has since completed over 59 years of dedicated service, and we pride
ourselves on offering world class quality medical care.

Presently, it is managed by a team comprising of Shri Jagdish C. Nanavati as the President,


Shri Suresh R. Nanavati as the Chairman and Shri Priyam S. Jhaveri as the Vice Chairman.

ISDN/ BRODBAND/ SATELITE
connectivity to provide very clear
image quality, triple data transfer of
voice, patient profile and investigation
reports simultaneously, enabling
specialist to see patient and give
guidance to local physicians at remote
centre. Along with this, special
software has been installed for store /
forward transmission facility in
computer hardware so that specialist
can see the report of referred patients
at ease and reply back.

ISRO’s telemedicine pilot project was started in the Indian Space Research Organisation [ISRO] has
year 2001 with the aim of introducing the Recognised Nanavati Hospital as premier Institution
telemedicine facility to the grass root level and Master Centre for its Telemedicine Project in
population as a part of proof of concept technology U.T., Maharashtra and other parts of the Country. Tie-

Telemedicine system consists of customized medical software integrated with computer hardware, along with

study and provide diagnosis and treatment during video – Conference at the patient’ end.
Presently ISRO’s Telemedicine Network Consist of more than 382 Hospitals, 307 Remote / Rural /District
Hospital / Health Centres Connected to 59 Super Specialty Hospitals Located in the Major Cities. Dr. Balabhai
Nanavati Hospital is one of the Super Specialty Hospital , Mumbai. As per Agreement ISRO has provided V-Sat
based communication facility through Indian satellite (EDUSAT_ between master centre and peripheral centres.
State -of - the -art infrastructure facilities have also been provided by ISRO to Nanavati Hospital. These included
high performance SONY camera, Computer terminal hardware and medical software and satellite dish for
communications.
Specialists of Nanavati Hospital Provide guidance through these facilities to hospitals under ISRO
telemedicine network.
ISRO – NRHM – NANAVATI HOSPITAL TELEMEDICINE PROGRAM

National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) Maharashtra state unit recognized nanavati Hospital
Telemedicine Master Centre in July 2009 to provide specialist service to 28 district hospital in
state of Maharashtra. This tie up is best example of private - public partnership module where
medical specialist of Nanavati Hospital gladly provide expert guidance to rural government run
hospitals in Maharashtra and conduct CME (Continuous Medical Education) Programs.
THE PAN AFRICAN E-NETWORK INITIATIVE
Nanavati Hospital Telemedicine centre became part of prestigious project of Minister of
external affairs (Govt. Of INDIA ) conducted by TCIL (Tele Communication Consultants Of
India Ltd) in August 2009 and inaugurated on 18th March 2010 by Mr. Priyam Jhaveri, Vice
Chairman of Nanavati Hospital .

This facility includes high end communication tools, servers, studio equipments and audio -
video editing and storage machines, connectivity to African continent is provided by dedicated
under sea fiber optic cabling by AIRTEL. Creation of this facility enables Medical specialists to
conduct regular Tele-consultation and Medical education program, lectures / seminars to 53
African Countries in regular manner. Nanavati Hospital is only hospital in Mumbai and
western India to provide this Telemedicine Facility to African continent and this brings
Telemedicine Centre on the international map.

ACHIEVMENTS AND OTHER PROJECTS OF TELEMEDICINE CENTRE

The centre is supported by National and Internationally recognised top Medical Specialists of
Mumbai working in Nanavati Hospital who have provided extensive guidance in Cardiology - Cardiac
surgery, Neurology – Neurosurgery, Chest diseases, Cancer Therapy and surgery, Diabetes and
endocrinology, orthopedics, Gynac, ENT, Skin disease and Nephro –Urology. They regularly
conduct Medical Education lectures to rural doctors and train paramedics, nurses and technicians for
newer treatment modules.

HOME CARE DIVISION (TELE- ECG PROGRAM)


This is first step of home care division of Telemedicine Centre. The centre has developed .Tele ECG
module under Tele cardiology solutions project. This tele ECG module has been developed as
unique research product in centre. This first of its kind service was launched by
Shri. Priyambhai Jhaveri vice – chairman of Nanavati Hospital on 18th March 2010. This portable
and handy device is a great diagnostic tool to know heart condition in heart patients specially after
heart attacks, angioplasty or after heart operations, who will get their ECG recorded at home and
transmitted to their physician’s mobile phone immediately for his quick advise.
This pioneering idea of twelve lead full ECG by a portable handy device was developed After 6
months of field trials of the device and mobile facility was perfected for use in masses. Future course
of Tele – ECG concept is to develop M2M technology within next few months and developing
devices for measuring B.P. , Oxygen saturation and other parameters in sick patients at home. Heart
patients will have to just dial Phone No : 022 – 26126656 between 10.30am to 5.30pm. for
registering at Telemedicine centre to avail Tele- ECG & ECG on Mobile service and a paramedic
will be sent with this portable device. In-fact this device is so simple that a patient himself can record
and send his ECG after little training. He can also rent or buy this not so expansive device for long
tern usage and keeping him connected to his heart specialist. This will enhance his confidence and
security that advice is about his ECG is ready at hand and his treating doctor can read his ECG his
ECG in no-time.
