FRI & SAT NIGHTS
Dr. Shelton’s Totally Awesome Fishing Adventure kicked off Saturday April 30 with
137 teams of anglers who normally are fighting for top positions on the weekend;
however in this tournament it’s all about the cause.
The tournament raises money for Memorial Health Systems in Lufkin to help cancer patients
pay for transportation and medications, along with any other needs they may have.
With the 137 teams paying a $200 entry fee each, the event earned at least $27,000 that will go
toward patient care and expenses as envisioned and began by Dr. Bill Shelton 18 years ago.
Shelton, a radiation oncologist at the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center saw a need for
some kind of event that would help raise money for the patients of the center when he found out
that one of his patients would have to stop on the side of the road to collect cans to be recycled
in order to pay for the cost of transportation to and from the center for treatments. Shelton then
began this tournament out of compassion and understanding of his patients, and now the legacy
lives on and continues to help those that need it.
The day started off with some much needed rain for the area, which presented a nuisance to
anglers trying to fish in the middle of the lake, the rain also brought high winds to add an extra
obstacle that the teams would have to work around throughout the rest of the day.
During the beginnings of the weigh in, the hopes of seeing big fish were squandering; however
eventually they poured in with 30 minutes or less to spare. Allen Moore and Clint Teutsch eventu-
ally brought in a stringer at 20.88 lbs. taking the spot for first and a check for $3,249.
Patrick and Shane Gammill missed the first place position by .01 ounces coming in with 20.87
lbs. and bringing home a check for $2,294.10. Shane and Patrick Gammill with their 5 fish limit that weighed 20.87 lbs.
Ray Livingston and Bill Rogers, no strangers to team competition, came in third with a 19.91 lb
stringer which earned them a check for $1,720 for their day on the water.
A tie for fourth and fifth occurred with 18.57 lbs. The tie was settled by the weight of the largest The big bass competition remained close throughout the day with bass coming in one after the

Reservoir Stratification,
Thermoclines, and Turnover
Todd Driscoll, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
time this thin surface layer of warm water is subject to mixing from wind and wave action. As spring progresses
into summer, the surface waters begin to warm faster and this warm water layer expands into deeper water. As
this process continues to accelerate into June, the reservoir becomes stratified into three layers: 1) the upper
layer of warm, less dense water of similar temperature, 2) the thermocline (small middle layer where the
temperature cools dramatically between the upper and lower layers), and 3) the lower layer of colder, more
dense water below the thermocline (usually has no oxygen). At Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend reservoirs, the
thermocline will typically begin to form at a water depth of 25 feet and increase in depth to approximately 40
feet at mid-summer.
Once thermal stratification develops, the top layer does not mix with the lower layer due to the strong water
density/temperature barrier at the thermocline. Due to the lack of mixing, the lower layer becomes anoxic (has
no oxygen) within three to four weeks after stratification. A positive indication of summer stratification is the
smell of rotten eggs at the powerhouse of Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend during water releases. This odor is
hydrogen sulfide, which primarily persists during anoxic conditions present in the lower layer.
Usually, anglers can find the thermocline with their electronics, as the density of water abruptly increases
at this layer. It may take manual increases of sonar sensitivity settings, but the thermocline will show up as
a straight line of increased clutter, similar to a scattered school of baitfish. Although baitfish and gamefish
can suspend in relation to the thermocline, oxygen levels in productive lakes like Sam Rayburn and Toledo
Bend often prevent this. During mid-summer when the thermocline may be in 40 feet of water, oxygen levels
typically fall to stressful levels below depths of 25 feet. This reduction in oxygen is caused by the bacterial decay
of nutrients and organic matter in the water. In this mid-summer situation, baitfish will typically suspend at
the lowest depth of adequate oxygen instead of the thermocline (typically 20 - 30 feet at Sam Rayburn and

There were a lot of strong sacks brought to the scales at Bass N Bucks on Toledo Bend April
30, 2011. David Fox and Anthony Clemens topped the pack, leaving their competition in the
dust with 29.37 lbs!
The morning started out windy at Cypress Bend Marina, and showed little relief throughout
the day. Aside from the wind, conditions were prime and the fish were biting.
Several teams came up to the scales with sacks nudging the 20 pound mark. David Fox and
Anthony Clemens hit it first, with nearly 30 pounds! Their 8.45 lb kicker only held top spot for

Bart Blakelock brought their creel to be tallied that included a 9.68 lb kicker, the biggest bass

For David Fox & Anthony Clemens, their morning started out at a dead run. “We targeted

boat. Throwing both the flukes and a ¾ oz shad pattern spinnerbait, they were able to cull

WOW! The hotter the weather gets – the hotter the fishing is on Sam Rayburn Lake.
Bass-N-Bucks held its last tournament of the Rayburn Series on May 7th and except for some
pesky winds the weather was starting to feel like summer. It was a beautiful morning as the
anglers headed out of the launching area to search for a big sack of bass and one of the teams
found the pot of gold.
The Umphrey Pavilion was a beehive of activity as the first flight of anglers made their way
to the weigh-in scales. The weather had turned windy and hot with bright skies, but Randy
Turner and his partner Jerry McMullen weighed in a nice 16.73 pound bag of fish to start the
fireworks. But that was soon beat by weights that gradually climbed up into the 20+ pound
mark. At one point Big Bass of the Tournament was a tie between two 5.30 pounders, but this
is Sam Rayburn, and you knew that with the caliber of anglers fishing this tournament, bigger
bass were bound to hit the scales. Derek and Dave Mong knocked the 5-pounders out with an
8.08 pounder, and at this point you could almost hear the drum roll because the highlight of
the event was getting ready to happen.
Jonathan Garrie and Casey Sobczak struggled to place their big bag of bass on the scales
and when the smoke cleared the scales read 30.09 pounds (they had a ½-pound penalty for a
dead bass so that made the total 29.59 pounds). To make it even better, their “kicker” bass was
a whopping 10.11 pound lunker. Think about it for a minute. For a five bass limit that would
basically mean that you have four 5-pounders in the livewell and then add a kicker weighing
over 10-pounds. Unbelievable! Jonathon Garrie and Casey Sobczak hold up two of the winning
fish from their total weight of 29.59 lbs taking 1st place.
Garrie and Sobczak are class act young men and certainly no strangers to the winners circle.
Sobczak is from the Spring area and Garrie resides in Nacogdoches. The team pocketed a cool
$8000 for the win, $1000 for Big Bass of the Tournament and also won the coveted title of Bass-
N-Bucks Anglers of the Year. The team had an all day bite and they fished a number of spots depth. Grass and structure were definitely a factor in their success. During the day they culled
in the mid-lake to south area. They used a variety of baits, but stated that the majority of their about three times.

Making goals and then working to achieve them is important for everyone, including – and maybe especially
– for kids. When it is made into a family fun filled event, it just keeps getting better.
“Back in December our grandson Brandon was fishing with me below the Lake Livingston dam and caught a
catfish. After checking the Texas river water body records I realized that it qualified as a junior water body record,
so we recorded it. When the certificate came in the mail it caught the eyes of the other grandkids (being that 7
year old Brandon was prancing around showing it off in front of them and bragging of what a great fisherman
that he was).
WOW!
Now the other 5 grandkids wanted to know when I could take each one of them to catch their own record fish.
Well, that presented a real challenge for PawPaw, and not being a one sided person, sat back and wondered how I
am going to get each one of the grandkids to catch a water body recordable fish. But the best part is that all of our
grandkids want to go fishing with me, and man, this is great. I have had a lot of pleasure spending quality time
with each one of them on the water in the boat, and going from place to place fishing for different types of fish.
We have grandkids from 4 thru 15 years of age and I do realize that by some people’s standards, some of the
fish they caught are not enormous in size, but when you watch a small child fight with all they have to get (the
fish) to the net, it was a big fish to them.
As we got going on this adventure, and had several kids with records, it came to me that it just might really
be possible to get all of our grandkids to catch a junior water body record recorded by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Come by and see our Full Line today!
Dept. Well, the certificate for the last one came in the mail, and we now can say that each and every one of our
6 grandchildren has caught and recorded a record fish with PawPaw and Memaw. I just really don’t know how 707 Southview Circle - Center, Texas

fishing could get any better than this, and that we are living a blessed life.”
- Proud PawPaw Glenn Bird
Even though the lake is eight feet low and the weather was VERY windy, Toledo Bend once again
showed why she is one of the premier bass lakes in the country. A number of bags of fish weighing
18-plus pounds were brought to the Cypress Bend Park weigh-in site as Bass-N-Bucks completed its next
to last event in the Toledo Series. Toledo Bend has 186,000 acres of water and many fishing patterns can
be effective, but on this day David Fox and his partner Anthony Clemens used a shallow water strategy to
best the field with a 24.26 pound bag of “chunks”.
It seems like the wind has been blowing for months and this weekend was certainly no exception.
A stiff breeze in the 12+ mph range greeted anglers at starting time and then got progressively worse
throughout the day. I was on the water and I can assure you that the wind sure made it tough if you
wanted to make a run out on the open water.
At weigh-in time it looked like it was going to be another Toledo Bend shoot-out. Hefty sacks of bass
started showing up and despite the windy conditions the bass were on a good feed. Martin Elshout and
his partner Mark Price were the first team to break the 20-pound mark with a limit of bass that weighed
20.10 pounds. This was followed by a number of 18 and 19+ pound sacks but the crowd knew that some-
one would bring an exceptional bag of fish to the scales. The team of David Fox and Anthony Clemens
claimed that honor by weighing 24.26 pounds to take the win and the guaranteed $8,000 1st place check.
This always consistent team was also fishing in a qualified Ranger boat so they took the $2500 Ranger
Cup bonus. It gets better – the team also had a Yamaha SHO outboard on their Ranger boat so they re-
ceived the Yamaha VMAX SHO Bonus Free Entry worth $280, and also the Cabela’s bonus for $250. WOW!
Tournament morning for the Fox and Clemens team started off with an early bite that included a fine

mid-lake locations.” Clemens added, “We really made the trolling motor work today because the wind Bass-N-Bucks presented them with the $8,000 1st place check, the $2,500 Ranger Cup bonus and the

Teaming Up To Win
By Jim Binns
I listened as the two anglers who were paired for the tournament claimed to be “on fish”. One angler’s
pattern was to fish crankbaits by the dam while the other angler was flipping brush “way up lake.” Issues like
this are usually decided by flipping a coin and the winner get to fish his water. But that usually leaves one
angler in the boat as a “grumpy” partner instead of a cooperative partner.
This scenario is played out many times during the year and it all boils down to the “your fish or mine”
issue. But savvy anglers know that it’s best to work a strategy rather than to have a showdown. I can assure
you that winning one of these bass tournaments is built around teamwork, not rivalry within the boat.
In my opinion flipping a coin to decide where to fish should be the absolute last resort. Smart anglers
should sit down together before the tournament and discuss a plan that can maximize the strategy and skills
of both fishermen. Key items that should be discussed are:
• Where, how many and what size bass are being caught
• How well have you done in practice (or past tournaments) with this pattern
• How deep are the fish
• How will weather changes affect the pattern
• What time of day does the pattern work best
• Is the area getting lots of fishing pressure from other tournament anglers?
• And perhaps most important – Is there a backup plan in case the pattern fails
As you discuss the strategy, both anglers need to be completely honest with each other and don’t exaggerate.
There is nothing to win by telling your partner that all of your bass were tournament “keepers” if they were
really “dinks”.
Once all of this is discussed it is commitment time. If it is a two day tournament you have a few more full of tension and bad vibes. That is something neither of you need.

A really good situation can exist if both anglers have been fishing the same general area because now it’s than to lose valuable fishing time because of simple problems that could have easily been avoided. (And also
just a matter of incorporating both fishing techniques during the day. make sure you know who is bringing the drinks and eats)
So what happens if problems arise and the two anglers just can’t agree on a strategy? Well now it’s time On tournament morning all differences should be put aside and both anglers should function as a team.
to find out how good you are at “negotiating”. Give your partner valid reasons why you think your pattern is Remember, you are out there to catch bass for a team weight, not to beat your partner. While on the water you need

avoid further argument. If you get all “huffy” then your fishing will suffer and your day on the lake will be Good Fishing - JB

On the morning of the McDonald’s
tournament Cord was fishing standing on
the bank behind his grandfathers house
on Sam Rayburn lake. At first the fishing was a
little slow as Cord caught some small catfish and
a couple of turtles. Then Cord got the big bite and
he set the hook. The fight was on as Cord and the
big catfish struggled against each other. The big
catfish wanted to head to deeper water but Cord
was not going to let him have any of that. Finally
Cord got the catfish coming towards the bank and
his uncle netted him. High fives were for everyone

TOLEDO BEND
It’s official! The 25th Anniversary for the Toledo Bend McDonald’s Big Bass Splash is now
H-I-S-T-O-R-Y as CEO Bob Sealy would say. This three day tournament is for amateur anglers only,
giving them a chance to win big money just like the pro’s. One bite – one hookset – one bass is all it
takes to win an event like this, and it is a game where size definitely matters. In the end, the last 30
minutes that the scales were open it was an 11.60 lb catch that won the tournament.
Over the years, thanks to all of the participants, donations to the Ronald McDonald house,
benefactor of the event, has received several hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We are so honored to
hear from people who have been able to utilize the Ronald McDonald House when they have a loved
one in the hospital, and their heartfelt stories of gratitude just makes it all worth it” – Bob Sealy.
This tournament yielded another $10,360 for the Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Charities.
The tournament started Friday, May 20th with the ceremonies happening at Cypress Bend Park.
Each day in addition to the hourly prizes, two $5,000 checks are up for grabs to the first 3.00 and
4.00 lb exact weight bass brought in. The second fish to hit the scales Friday morning locked in at

32 replicas were presented by Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) for all of the bass caught and
turned in to the Toledo Lunker Bass program weighing in excess of 10 pounds over this past season.
The program is open to any Toledo Bend Angler, with the fish being brought in to any of four weigh
stations including: Newell’s Fishing World, Pirate’s Cove, Huxley Bay Marina and Toledo Town & Tackle.
Scottie’s Taxidermy did the beautiful replicas that were presented to these accomplished anglers.
Five of the fish turned in this year was previously caught and turned in to the program. The fact that
they are caught and released yet again shows the success of the program. The anglers are not charged
to participate or charged for their replicas. This is a year round program. For more information visit
their website, www.toledo –bend.com/tbla.
Tournament Pro Gerald Swindle was weigh master throughout the weekend, providing many smiles
and a lot of laughs to everyone within earshot. Casey Ashley, winner of his second Bassmaster Elite
tournament, was also on hand and performed a few of his songs from his latest album to the crowd
on Sunday. A total of 2,072 people entered this years’ event, and Linda Curtis Sparks from the Sabine
Parish Tourism thanked the Sealy family and all that have participated in the tournament over the
years on behalf of the entire community.
