Course Description:

This course provides a basic framework to understand the dynamics and


techniques of the management process in human service organizations. There are
seminar presentations. Students have to team up for presentations. Presentations are
case studies drawing experiences from their work, fieldwork experiences, or student
activities (You can draw on the management reforms and practice of HKU, such as
strategic planning, quality teaching, staff development, human resources planning and
performance appraisal). The objective of the course is to enable students to develop
basic knowledge and skills, with special focus on human resource management.
Course work assignments (in around 3,000 words) have to be submitted on or before
14 Dec. 2009 (soft-copy)

Course assessment:
For undergraduates: 40% based on coursework (20% on presentation and 20% on
Group term paper) and 60% on examination.
For post-graduates: 30% presentations and 70% coursework (term paper) for
postgraduates.

Seminar Presentations

Students are required to form a group of three to work on one of the following topics
and make a 50 minutes presentation (35 minutes presentation, 10 minutes Q & A and
5 minutes feedback from tutor). Presentation schedule will be arranged later in the
class and through emails. The grading of the presentation will be given according to
the effort, preparation, presentation skills, organization and content. English will be
used as the major medium of presentation (around 20% of Cantonese will be
allowed).
