City drops bottom from Red Flannels

Festival falls victim to state financial crisis
CEDAR SPRINGS — In a letter dated
May 13, city manager Christine Burns
communicated the recently adopted City
Budget plans to eliminate all city services
(police and public works employee wag-
es, fuel for the antique fire engine, street
sweeping and equipment rental) for the
Red Flannel Festival. At a subsequent
meeting on May 17, with Mayor Charlie
Watson, Mayor Pro Tem Christine Fahl
and City Finance Director Linda Lehman
explained the state budget cuts in rev-
enue sharing causing the recommenda-
tion from city staff to propose eliminat-
ing support to the 15th oldest festival in
Michigan.
Like most communities in Michigan,
Cedar Springs has cut staff, benefits,
health insurance and services historical-
ly provided for citizens such as monthly
brush pickup and spring clean-up servic-
es. The Mayor and Council felt there was
nowhere else to cut.
The Festival, which draws between 30
and 40 thousand guests per year to the
sleepy northern Kent County community
each October, will need to urgently rework
budgets, events and, as recommended by
the City Manager, seek privatized services
for security and public works. The cost is
estimated at approximately $7,600.
Festival Board President Michele An-
dres is concerned about the timing and
significant impact of the cuts, as the Fes-
tival is only 4 months away. “Our budget
was finalized in February, we’ve already
distributed our sponsor packets, and con-
tracted with vendors.” Andres also noted
that several events may need to be cut
from the 2011 Festival, which has experi-
enced phenomenal growth the past nine
years. Final decisions will be made at an
emergency Red Flannel Festival Board
meeting on Tuesday, May 31.

hold annual
St. Jude’s
Bike-a-thon
To raise awareness and funds
for St. Jude’s Research Hospital,
pre-schoolers at Resurrection Lu-
theran Church in Sand Lake held a
bike-a-thon on Friday, April 29.
Nineteen total children, from
ages 2 to 4, took part in the 26th
annual bike-a-thon, which has
been done in memory of Jennifer
Kowalczyk, daughter of Mike and
Sue Kowalczyk, who passed away
from Burkett’s Lymphoma at the
age of 12, on March 30, 1984, and
was a sixth-grade student at Tri
County Middle School.
Youngsters on their bikes, tri-
cycles, big wheelers and strollers,
had milk cartons tied to their han-
dlebars, and after one time around
the track, a penny was dropped
into their cartons.

Panhandle Fund achieves milestone Scrap metal theft thwarted

In 1999, several members in
the community saw the wisdom
and the vision for the benefits
that could be created by estab-
lishing a community founda-
tion. Hence the creation of the
Montcalm Panhandle Commu-
nity Fund, a sub-fund of the
Greenville Area Community
Foundation was established.
Led by Chuck Halterman, Rich
& Cheryl Pease, Fred C. Plath
& Barb & Bill Rollins the orga-
nization began its journey to
build a financial legacy for the
community.
Now, after a little more than
10 years, the organization is
very pleased to announce that
it has surpassed $100,000 in
its general fund category. In
addition to reaching this im-
pressive benchmark, the fund
also has a number of donor
designated funds over and
above the $100,000 in its gen-
eral fund. There is the Pease
Insurance Agency Scholarship
Fund which specifically pro-
vides annual scholarships to
a Tri-County male and female
senior who will be attending a
four year university program.

Montcalm County Sheriff’s
Office deputies responded to
a reported theft in progress of
scrap metal in Edmore early Fri-
day night. Once on scene, depu-
ties determined that the owner
of the Metal Mall had caught two
men loading scrap metal into a
pick-up truck belonging to one of
the suspects. Deputies state that
when the owner of the property
approached the two suspects, one
of them fled the area on foot. The
owner of the property was able
to apprehend the second suspect
who was arrested by deputies
and transported to the Montcalm
County Jail where he is being
charged with Felony larceny. A
sheriff’s K-9 team was called to
track the man that fled, however,
he was able to flee the area. Depu-
ties were able to identify the amn
who fled and are obtaining arrest
warrants. The incident remains
under investigation.

for its annual award to a se-
nior student that is pursing a
business degree and attended
high school in the Panhandle
District.
Our newest fund is just get-
ting started — the Kyle Boss
Memorial Aviation Scholar-
ship Fund. Kyle, a 2004 grad-
uate who spent his high school
years at both Lakeview High
School and Tri-County High
School lost his life in 2007
while in crop dusting school.
The scholarship associated
with this fund will be for a
Tri-County or Lakeview senior
who wants to further their
education in aviation or with
aviation as a key component.
In total, all funds associ-
ated with the Montcalm Pan-
handle Community Fund are
now approaching $130,000.

STAGE DOOR PLAYERS HOLDING AUDITIONS — On Monday and
Tuesday, June 6 and 7, at 8 p.m., Stage Door Players is holding open auditions
for their upcoming summer show entitled Sex Please, We’re Sixty written by
Michael Parker and Susan Parker. This hilarious comedy takes place in Mrs.
Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast where her guests return year after
year. The next door neighbor believes the women come back to visit with him

The next visit you take to the high school you’ll notice
the 10 x 32 foot sign on the outside of the building. It
reads, “TCHS Home of the Vikings.” The sign is made of
aluminum sheets and is mounted above the cafeteria. A
special coating will protect it from Michigan’s weather.
Last Fall, it was brought to Principal Mabie’s attention
that there was no building sign, creating confusion for
visitors. The idea to have the students be a part of this
was a staff decision. The design contest was issued to
the students and it was Victoria Simcoe, a senior from
second trimester Photoshop whose artwork was chosen.

Not only do you see student artwork
on the outside of the high school, but take
a journey into the office and you’ll see 200
individual pieces of artwork, hooked together
to form a beautiful mural.
The mural is made of 200 clear plastic
cd cases, each containing a photo or graphic
artwork. It was created from a combined effort
of students in; Yearbook, Photoshop, Graphic
Arts (Illustrator), and Art classes. The words,
“We are TC,” are in the center of the mural.

do this project in her classroom, but Connie

wonderful sight it is!
