GENERAl. INFORMATION

PERSONAL PROTECTOR - PUNT PROTECTION
You are the quarterback of the punt team. You have a very important role; one that can
literally make the difference of winning or losing in a close game.

You have to know the protections, IUlderstand how to apply them, and communicate "loud
and clear" to our punt team. You will need to study the opponents rush on video.

Red • Punt and coverage to ri&hl side of field


Blue· Punt and coverage to I.cfi side of field.

2. "8 Up"; 7 Up" etc number of rusher apparent at LOS.

3. Roger (right); Louie (left) direction that you are having the center block to.

"ZQRRO" Tenn calling for Zwle protection on one side of LOS.

"MACHO" Tenn calling for Man protection on gne or b!!.tb sides of LOS

"HOT" Tenn that tells the front people that regardless of earlier calls, to
block ZORRO (zone) to the center's block side, the personal
protector will pick up anx late rusher coming from the side away
from center's block. This late or "HOT" rusher would be someone
coming late & fast from off the LOS or outside on our head-hunter.
If \>Ie had time we would simply "recount" and protect accordingly.

"RECOUNT" Tenn to say we might be changing the protection due to a shift of


some kind. Look and listen to new situation. Everyone be alert and
communicate as necessary.

"SET" Last call made (hopefully) before ball is snapped. We..cmW1 get a
HOf call (in an llTllSllai situation) after the ·SET" call. On "SET" -
call everyone should be anticipating the snap.
"ZORRO" PUNT PROTECTION

ZORRO is the tenn we use to zone block that side of the LOS. It tells each man that he
must be ready to "jam" a rusher both to his inside and outside gaps. In "ZORRO" we will set
back in a straight line, keeping proper relationship with the man to our inside and outside.
"SLOT" men must keep relationship with tackle and never IWe up the inside lane, If you have
to give up anywhere make the outside rusher come all the way around. Never be soft to the
insjde.

Basic technique for "ZORRO" is to step straight back krx:pini shoulders low to maximize
punch on rushers to both gaps. StaY square and do !lOt open any l;mes. Give ground grudgingly
and keep alignment relationship intact.

• If rushers pull out on snap, set back then get into coverage quickly. Don't block air!

• Don't allow people to hold you up .

• Fight your way out and get to your lane

We zone block only when we have to against an overload of 5 on one side, or on the
center's block side when there areS (or more) total rushers.

With "8 up" we will always "ZORRO" block the side that the center is blocking.
("ROGER" = Right or "LOUIE" = left.)

However, lemember that if there are only 7 (or less) rushers we don' t have to "ZORRO"
because the persona! protector and center will block the #1 rusher on 4-man side, or the man W1
the center if it's and "odd" look - 3 on each side with a !IOseman.

a MACRO
"MACHO PROTECTION AND PUNTS
Coaro;D" Points;

"Mamo" is ba~ man 10 man punt protection, with a very quick & short drop-step 10
check for twists and quick moves. We use MACHO any time that there are three (3) or less
~ to that side lIIld we use it against four (4) rushers when the center is blocking ~ from
your side. This is possible becanse the personal protection (PP) will block the number #1 rusher
aligned Wl the center, or in the gap area on the MACHO side, ~ from the Roger (= Right)
or "Louie" (=Left) call, (made by the personal protector)
The Personal Protector will make a "Macbo, Macbo" call when there are only six (6)
rushers at L. O.S. rut it is the responsibility of the blockers to always know the numbers of rushers
on your side.
* Also, you !!I!lst kmw which way the center is blocking because we ~ want the center
to have to block a rusher to his gap with no help.
The technique for MACHO is to identify by pointing to the man you should block. Take
a quick and short set back and as the rusher comes - punch straight through his chest with your
helmet. Get a good, tough shot on him, using your hands to punch and push off or to get free of
him if he is trying to hold you up.
On MACHO - dQ..nQt deep set and retreat. It is an aggressive block so you can stun him
and get into coverage quickly.
If ~ stutters or delays coming of the ball on the snap, don't wait for him - Get into
coverage quickly , Avoid him,
* Unless there is an IIDJ1snai alignment -like 5 on side, and 2 on the other, anytime there are
seven(7) or less rushers we should be in MACHO protection on both sides of the ball.

*** Remember that regardless of what calls are made for punt protection in advance of the
snap, the rushers might shift, or run up, or back out at the last second. For this reason you
always have to be alert, communicate and basically understand what we are doing,
