Physical Fitness
Baseline
by OT David Murphy
Flight 3-12 came out swinging on
the chilly Tuesday morning of March
8, 2011, to take their Physical Fitness
Baseline (PFB). The PFB is comprised
of three physical activities that the
Officer Trainees must complete with
certain scores in a set amount of time
to pass. The three activities include one
minute of push-ups, one minutes of
sit-ups and a mile-and-a-half run.
Seven members of 3-12 received
a 90% or better, earning them a
ranking of excellent. One member,
OT Thomas Cheney maxed out every
category, earning a 100%. OT Cheney
has become the example for the rest
of the Flight, which still has room for
improvement.
Flight members will have a chance
to improve their scores during the
Physical Fitness Diagnostic on March
30.

The Project X-Factor

Project X…What thoughts does that
bring to mind? The only thing that
Flight 3-12 knew on March 11, 2011
was that it would be a challenge—the
first hands-on test of our leadership
abilities. We knew that we would be
facing various obstacles and would
have to work as a team to overcome
them, but we did not know exactly
how challenging that task would
be. After multiple leadership classes
during our first week at OTS, we
thought that Project X would be no
problem; however, we found out
through this exercise how important
those academic concepts of planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling
were when facing real tasks in a
limited amount of time. Through
this exercise, we were able to really
explore the depths of those concepts—
how our planning was not thorough, Six members of Flight 3-12 attempt to complete one of the four Project X mission on March 11,
our organizing was insufficient, and 2011. In this event the team was tasked with getting some sensitive supplies, and themselves,

different people wanted to take
the lead and tackle the mission in
a different way. We found that in
order to be effective leaders, we must
also be effective followers. Project X
showed us a lot about where we can
stand improvement in our leadership
abilities. Our only regret was that
there was not more time dedicated to
continue confronting more obstacles!
