Executive Summary
• Hiring slows nationwide. Nationwide job openings declined slightly this month,
dropping -2.6% month-over-month from April. Despite the decrease, job openings
were still up 26.1% from 2010. “Although job openings decreased a bit from last month,
there’s no cause for alarm,” said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com. “Some
months tend to be slow for hiring, and our site continues to see healthy numbers of job
listings despite that.”

• Less openings in St. Louis, Cleveland & Akron. While the majority of metros were
stagnant or had declines in job openings, St. Louis (-8.7%) and Cleveland & Akron
(-7.3%) proved to be particularly difficult job markets in May. The top employers in both
metros had only 500 or less job openings, compared to over 3,000 job openings at the
top employer in Washington, DC.

• Improvement in nationwide job competition. The national job competition ratio

improved this month, dropping from 6:1 to 5:1. Though job growth slowed, many states
reported lower unemployment rates, which could account for the improved ratio.
This improvement was also reflected in certain metros: Miami & Fort Lauderdale, Los
Angeles and Grand Rapids dropped to 7:1, 5:1 and 4:1 ratios.

• Retail and finance stay strong. Although May proved to be a slow hiring month for
nearly all industries and occupations, the two strongest sectors continued to grow. Job
openings for retail salespersons increased 64.1% month-over-month and openings for
financial specialists and accountants increased 34.8%.

Employment Impact: Summer Holiday

• Travel hiring continues to decline. Hiring in the travel industry continued to decrease
in May, down another -15.4% after already dropping -15.6% in April. This continued
decrease is likely a sign of a sluggish summer travel season. Hiring in the related
hospitality industry also decreased, down -3.1% (-1.9% in April).

Local Market Outlook
HIGHLIGHTS

• Hiring slows across most metros. Hiring appeared to slow across nearly all areas in May. 32 of
50 metros had a decline in job openings, and another 9 metros had growths of less than 1.0%.
The most significant growths for the month were in smaller metros: Austin (6.6%), West Palm
Beach (6.3%) and Albuquerque & Santa Fe (4.1%).

• Strong job market in West Palm Beach. While Austin had the greatest month-over-month
job growth, West Palm Beach was the best location for job seekers in May. The metro had the
second-greatest growth and is consistently one of the least competitive markets (2:1).

Industry and Occupation Outlook
HIGHLIGHTS

• Decline in media hiring. Hiring in the media industry dropped -5.5% in May, corresponding with
a -34.3% decrease in job openings for journalists and media workers. The same sector saw fairly
significant growth in April, which suggests that this month’s decline is likely due to open positions
being filled.

• Transportation stays afloat. Despite challenges from rising oil prices, transportation was one of
the few industries posting an increase in job openings, up 12.9%. Job openings for drivers, pilots
and other transportation workers also increased 9.6%.
