PSpice Simulation (Venue : Electronic Instrumentation & Measurement
Laboratory, E2)
One-port network, Two-port Networks – admittance parameters, impedance
parameters and transmission parameters

Aims :

Upon reading the accompanying notes and relevant topic from textbook we are to
be familiar with one port network and, admittance (y), impedance (z), hybrid (h) and
transmission (ABCD) parameters of a two port network.

Apparatus :
Breadboard, dc voltage supply, resistors and connectors.

Procedures :
One-port network
1. Measure resistor values needed to build the circuit as given in Fig. 5.1 and
enter them in the following Table 5.1.
2. Construct the corresponding circuit and measure the impedance by breaking at
a and a’, b and b’ and c and c’ and fill in Table 5.1 below.

Admittance (y) parameters
4. Repeat step 1 to suit Fig. 5.2 for Table 5.2 entries. Build the respective circuit.
5. Based on the given equations of Table 5.2, apply appropriate sourcing
(V1 = 10V or V2 = 1V) and short-circuiting (V1 = 0 or V2 = 0) to the terminals
of interest for the measurement of voltages and currents to solve for the y
parameters. Source the circuit with 10V.

6. Find the percentage of relative error comparing PSpice simulation values and
measured ones and state the admittance parameters in matric form.

Impedance parameters
7. Connect resistors to configure the network given in Fig. 5.3 for Table 5.3
entries as follows.
8. Assemble the circuit. By applying appropriate sources (I1=10mA or 12=1mA)
and open circuits (I1 = 0 or I2 = 0) of terminals of interest as given in
impedance parameter equations, the desired values can be found.

9. Why are they called open-circuit impedance parameters ?

Hybrid parameters
10. Wire up the resistors to make the two circuits as given in Fig. 5.4 for the
purpose of obtaining current parameters of Table 5.4. By applying appropriate
sources (I1=10mA or V2=10V) and open circuits (V2=0 or I1=0) to terminals
of interest as given in hybrid parameter equations, fill in Table 5.4.

11. Hybrid parameters represent an impedance, an admittance, a voltage gain and

a current gain. State a component which has these values given in
manufacturer’s data sheet.

Transmission (ABCD) parameters

12. Construct the following cascaded two port network and find tA and tB.
Calculate t for the combined network. Set V1=10V and I1=1mA. Tabulate
your results accordingly.

PSpice Simulation and Accompanying Notes

1. Study the accompanying notes entitled Two-Port Networks and Passive Filters.
With the given input file on pages 10 & 11 simulate the corresponding circuits in
Fig. 12.9 & Fig 12.10. Assign a short or a source to appropriate input or output
terminals to acquire all the admittance parameters as given. The schematic to find
I1 and I2 is given in Fig. 5.1 below as an example.

2. Calculate the impedance parameters involved, after appropriate sourcing and open-
circuiting of suitable terminals when simulating AC network given in Fig. 12.14. The
schematic needed to obtain z11 and z21 as provided in the following Fig 5.2 is of
reference.

Fig. 5.2

3. Finally, the ABCD or transmission parameters. As explained in the notes, A and C

are open-circuit parameters whereas B and D are short-circuit parameters. Given in
Fig. 12.16 is the real world T-section representation of transmission line. Run the
analysis and perform appropriate calculation to the simulated results as verifications
to the answers provided. Parameters A and C are found by simulating the following
circuit drawn in Fig.5.3 below.
