sections.

Suggested Textbooks and Materials

Text: Calculus, 9th Edition, Larson and Edwards
Solutions manual: The Student Solutions Manual is optional and available in the bookstore.
This course can be taken in conjunction with any text/source that contains all of the relevant
material. However suggested practice problems are indicated for the suggested textbook. A “week
by week” listing of material in terms of content is included for those opting to use a different source
of information.
Calculators/CAS: A graphing calculator or CAS system, Maple, MatLab, Methematica, etc.
might be beneficial for understanding certain aspects of this class, but are not required. You should
however only use a computing device for the purpose of increasing your understanding or checking
your answers. On exams, credit will not be given if work is absent, in addition exact answers are
expected whenever possible.
Syllabus -2- Math 2419

Additional Resources
eLearning: There will be an eLearning (http://elearning.utdallas.edu) course for this class. Class
announcements, homework, grades, etc., will be posted through eLearning. Please do not e-mail
your instructor via eLearning unless you have set your profile to use your UTD email address as
the reply-to address, otherwise the instructor gets an e-mail from no-return@webct and may not
reply.
GEMS center math lab: (http://www.utdallas.edu/GEMS/mathlab/index.html) The Math Lab
provides free walk-in tutoring for students. In addition to the help available during normal operating
hours, each registered student is entitled to a free, one-hour, individual tutorial per week. Individual
tutorials require an appointment which are arranged via learning center personnel. GEMS also runs
peer led group sessions which you must sign up for at the beginning of the semester.

Course Description
Continuation of MATH 2417. Improper integrals, sequences, infinite series, power series, parametric
equations and polar coordinates, vectors, vector valued functions, functions of several variables,
partial derivatives and applications, multiple integration.
The following tables give a rough approximation of what material we intend to cover each week.
The sections and problems indicated are for Calculus, 9th ed. These suggested problems will not
be graded; you must work problems beyond those assigned as graded homework if you wish to do
well in this class.

Assessment
This is a mathematics class and thus assessment is fairly clear-cut, you must be able to correctly
solve problems related to the material covered, otherwise you will not pass the class. There
is no passing just for participation, in the final analysis you have to perform the mathematics
adequately. There will be no curving of the final grades.
The grade will be computed as follows:

Grading Scheme
25% Cumulative Final Exam
20% Higher Midterm
15% Lower Midterm
15% Weekly homework
15% Weekly Quizzes
10% Participation in lecture/problem section

Grade Scale: The usual

97–100 A+ 93–96 A 90–92 A-

87–89 B+ 83–86 B 80–82 B-
77–79 C+ 73–76 C 70–72 C-
67–69 C+ 63–66 D 60–62 D-
0– 59 F

Final: The final will be cumulative; the date/timer/place for the final will be announced later.
Midterms: Midterms will be taken in class, the precise date will be announced later.
Syllabus -3- Math 2419

Quizzes: Quizzes will be administered weekly and will cover material up to and including material
presented in lecture on the Friday preceding the quiz. The quizzes will be taken at the end of
your problem session and will be graded by your TA and returned in the following problem session.
Quiz problems will roughly mirror the problems you will see on exams - at least in term of level of
difficulty.
Participation. Attendance will be taken in class and problem sessions. This is a free part of the
grade to people who participate.
Homework Assignments
There will be about 10 mandatory graded assignments. Assignments will contribute 20% to your
final grade. The homework assignments will be published at MuchLearning and you will be given
approximately 7 days to submit your solutions ONLINE. MuchLearning is an easy-to-use educa-
tional platform, based on browser-based technology. You will only need the Firefox browser (there
is no need for additional plug-ins or downloads). This web-based software provides you with a
smart editor, which will allow you to present your math in a precise and elegant way. For some
problems you will have multiple attempts at the solution, others only one attempt. Your responses
for the most part must be typed in to the program and will be graded immediately. There will
be a deadline for completion of each assignment. Once the deadline has expired, your grade will
be transferred into eLearning (as a percent) and visible to you. There will be NO late graded
homework.
