Educational Advancement ‘A MUST’
Islam lays great emphasis on
seeking knowledge. No doubt
it is education which leads
one to intellectual, spiritual
and economical development.
Education is also necessary for us
to live a life of dignity.
The very first revelation of
the holy Quran was Iqra – read.
The holy Quran also asks: “Qul
hal yestawil lazeena yalamoona
wallazeena la yalamoon?” “Can
those who know be like those who
know not?” The Quranic prayer
which we recite quite often is:
“Rabbi zidni ilma” - “O my Lord,
increase me in my knowledge”
The Prophet of Islam, Hazrat
Mohammed (sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam) has said:
1. “Talabul ilmi fareezathun
ala kulli Muslimin wa Muslimatin”

every Muslim male and female.

bis seen”- seek education even if
it is available in China”.
There are also many other
ahaadees – sayings of Prophet
Mohammed (sal-am) about the
importance of education.
Once the Prophet, Hazrat
Mohammed (saws) came across
two circles of people. The first circle
was supplicating to Allah and the
other was listening to a discourse
by a teacher. The Prophet said,
“The first circle is begging God who
may or may not give them what
they want but the second circle is
getting education from a teacher.
I have been sent as teacher” and
then joined the second circle. This
shows how the Prophet valued
teachers and education. There
were also instances of educated
prisoners being released on the
condition that they should become
teachers and educate at least 10
people.
LIGHT OF ISLAM
The Prophet brought the light
of Islam to dispel the darkness of
ignorance. The Islamic ideology
based on rational thinking was
instrumental in making people
come out from their superstitious
beliefs and live a life of discipline,
decency and dignity. They became
knowledgeable under the influence

of Islam and conquered not only
the hearts of people but also many
parts of the world and ruled it with
the divine concept considering
the whole humanity - Arabs and
non-Arabs - as equal without any
discrimination of caste, creed,
colour, community etc.
The main reason for Indian
Muslims being educationally
backward is that they were in the
forefront in the freedom struggle
of the country. They opposed the
British rule strongly, considered
English education ‘haraam’
(prohibited) and were bent upon
liberating India from the slavery of
the British under the influence of
many great ulema. This brought
to them untold miseries and
hardships. They were harassed,
tortured, imprisoned and
murdered. The ulema who were
leading the liberation war were
the worst sufferers at the hands of
the British and faced even gallows
in Delhi and other places for their
anti British activities. History is
replete with instances of their
great sacrifices for the sake of our
country’s freedom.
LIMITED AWAKENING
However after independence
Muslims slowly realised the
importance of modern education
and started getting it thanks to
the efforts made by the leaders
connected with institutions like
the Aligarh Muslim University and
the Jamia Millia Islamia. Many
educational institutions including

medical, engineering etc. came into
existence in different parts of the
country particularly in the Southern
states and attracted students for
modern education. There are
also innumerable madrasas and
seminaries like the world famous
Darul Uloom in Deoband and
Nadwathul Ulema in Lucknow
which impart exclusive Islamic
education. The great reformer of
Indian Muslim community Sir Syed
Ahmed Khan had once said that “a
perfect Muslim is one who has the
holy Quran in one hand and the
science in the other”.
In spite of all these
developments Indian Muslims are
economically and educationally
backward in comparison with other
communities. But their position is
better particularly in the southern
states in comparison with their co-
religionists in other states of the
country. It is learnt that in states
like West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar
Pradesh Muslims are educationally
more backward. In brief the
Indian Muslim community has
somewhatchanged understanding
the changed situation but not
everywhere and not to the extent
necessary and to the level of other
communities.
Even after six decades of
independence, a vast majority of
Muslims particularly in the northern
states does not seem to have
changed their mindset in favour of
modern education perhaps because
some of our leaders are still living
in the past and are not serious
about taking this unfortunate
backward community to glory by
proper education. We must have
aspiration for better education
to abolish our backwardness and
attain forwardness by well chalked
out plans and programmes as the
pride of the nation Dr. A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam so emphatically states. It
is based on the concept of the
holy Quran which says that no
community will change for the
better unless it endeavours for it.
Dr. Allama Mohammed Iqbal put it
like this:
Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har
taqdeer se pahle
Khuda Bande se khud pooche
bata teri raza kya hai
(Increase your position to the
extent that even before writing
your destiny may Allah ask you:
what is it that you want?)
ROLE OF MOHALLA JAMATS
We have to ponder over our
present condition and take remedial
measures for our uplift. All should
co-operate with our ulema and
umara who are considered the
pillars of the society to play an
increased important role in shaping
our destiny. The importance the
Indian Union Muslim League is
giving to Mohalla Jamats to awaken
the community from its slumber
and chalk out programmes for
its betterment is really laudable.
It is really a wonderful stand
deserving support from one and
all. The Mohalla Jamats should be
strengthened and made to work
for the social, cultural, economical
and educational advancement of
the community in accordance with
the Islamic thoughts.

New Delhi : Many Muslim leaders and intellectuals like K. Rahman
Khan, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, favour the abolition of Haj
subsidy and the Indian government also has decided to abolish it in
phases, but some other leaders like Hasan Ahmad, Delhi MLA and Vice
Chairman of Haj Committee of India, say that this subsidy should not
be abolished because it is a democratic right of Muslims as ‘we are
citizens of this country and pay all taxes’. Therefore, it is also our right to

He said that by 30 April, which was the last date for submission of
Haj application forms, 270,000 applications were received but the Indian
quota of Hajis for Haj 2011 fixed by the government is 104,000, excluding

than double of this number want to go for Haj and hence it is essential
that the quota of Haj pilgrims must be increased otherwise thousands of
prospective Hajis will be deprieved of performing Haj. He said that Haj
committee of India chairperson Mrs. Mohsina Qidwai is trying to get the
quota increased. Hasan Ahmad said that an increase in the Haj Quota
is necessary because conditions here in India are different from other
countries. He said that after the draw of lots, Hajis who are selected
will have to submit their passports to the Haj Committee by 15 June,
otherwise their seats will be cancelled.
In reply to questions about Haj arrangements in Saudi Arabia, he
said that so far 33,000 units have been rented in Makka for residential
purposes in different categories and the process of renting more units
is in progress. He said that Haj flights from different Indian airports for
Jeddah and Madina will start from the last week of September. He said
that training also will be provided to Hajis but this year the producer

prepared a documentar based on Haj travels and all information and
activities of Haj and places of Ziarat, etc.., which will be very useful for

Kendrapada(Orissa) : Dalit childred at a
school in Jagatsinghpur district do not know where they went wrong
with their studies because teacher refused to check their notebooks. “
Ameachuta”(we are considered untouchables). Teacher refused to touch
our books and our homework is never corrected,” said Bijaya Malik, a
student of class four at the school at Keutapala in Balikunda block. “If we
even touch our teachers by mistake, they scold us for polluting them”,
he added.
The 40-odd dalit students in the school were allegedly singled out
and made to clean classroom and toilets. “I clean toilets at school”, said
Sameer Malik, a class 5th student. He looked puzzled when asked why
he agreed to do so. “ The teachers told me to do it”, the eleven year old
boy said, “ We are not even allowed to take water from the drinking pot
at schools”, he added.
Several students and their parents complain that they were victims of
caste-discrimination by the school staffs since long. The final straw how-
ever was when teacher refused to serve mid-day meals to the children.
This prompted incensed parent not to send their wards to school for the
past one week.
“The cook and some teachers who were entrusted to provide mid-day
meals abused some dalit children and refused to give them food. Our
children were also compelled to sit at a distance from upper caste chil-
dren during meal-time”, said Babaji Malik, the father of a Dailt Student.
“We have, therefore, decided not to send our children to that school”, he
added (Time of India, 25 April, 2011).

Court D.S. Sinha lamented that in the absence of an integrated panel,
drastic actions could not be undertaken for reforming the conditions of
the victims. There are vacancies in the commission which must be im-
mediately filled and the commission must be made financially autono-
mous. Rajesh, secretary to the commission, stated that the commission
was constituted in 2006. There were 610 cases during 2007-07 out of
which 565 had been settled while 45 are still pending. Out of 1420 cases
registered during 2007-08, 1172 were disposed off(248 pending). The
period 2008-09 witnessed 2260 cases out of which 1812 were disposed
off(448 pending). The period 2009-10 received 2992 cases out of which
2122 have been disposed off. Thus, out of 7282 cases during the past
four years 5671 has been disposed off(78% disposal). In a shocking
revelation the commission divulged the fact that cases of human rights
violations by the police machinery have substantially increased which
have risen from 163 to 910. It had admitted inability in taking legal
action cases pertaining to the police. In 2009-10 there are 411 cases
against the police machinery. In information furnished in the assembly
it was disclosed that there were 12446 prisoners in the state out of
which 647 were women prisoners. The intake is 74.9% more than what
the prisons can actually accommodate. About the minorities it has been
acknowledged that 1940 Muslim women and 112 children were victims
of such violation.

ed from the usually “safe” Ven-
gara constituency in Malappuram
district romped home by nearly
33,000 votes. He said on Friday
that he was unperturbed by at-
tempts to rake up the sex scandal
since courts had already rejected
many petitions related to it.

League has won, 12 are in Malap-
puram district which is the party’s
safe haven where the party can
give a fitting reply to the state con-
ference of the CPI (M) by a mere
district conference. Only the rest
eight go to other districts – three
in Kozhikode, two in Kasargod, and
one each in Kannur, Ernakulam

Terrorism is against the tenets of Islam

Ulemas shall strive to enlighten the world
“Terrorism is against the tenets
of Islam. Ulemas are competent
and duty bound to convey this
message to the people of the
world”, M. Abdul Rahman, MP,
appealed to the ulemas while
addressing on the occasion of
the golden jubilee celebration of
Sabeelur Rashad Arabic College,
Bangalore on 9 May, 2011.
The following is the text of the
speech delivered by M. Abdul
Rahman MP:
It gives me an immense pleasure
to participate in the historical
golden jubilee celebration of
Sabeelur Rashad Arabic College.
On this occasion I admire and pray
for Allahma Abu Saud Ahmed Baqvi
Hazrath for founding this Madrasa
with the purity of heart and thought
which produce innumerable young
and energetic Ulemas.
Students, not only from India,
but from foreign join in and
seek Islamic knowledge from
this madrasa and they spread
the Islamic principles among the
people of the world.
I pray to Almighty the Madrasa
which produces great Islamic
scholars to grow in leaps and
bounds and to reach the pinnacle
of success and pride.
I recal l on this occasion
the bond of friendship and love
that existed between the Indian
Union Muslim League leader
Qaid-e-Millath and Allahma Abu
Saud Hazrath. I also recall the
cordiality between Siraj-ul-Millath
Abdul Samath and Abu Saud
Hazrath. Hazrath had become
part and parcel of Indian Union
Muslim League. He never failed to
participate in all the party functions
and programs and shared his
love and affection with one and
all. His life remains as a standing
testimony and an exemplary one
proclaiming the pride and glory of
the Muslim League.
Meenakshipuram becomes
Rahmat Nagar
At one point of time, when
Meenakshipuram had become
Rahmat Nagar, people from the
North thronged to Tamil Nadu to
spread hatred and enmity and
indulged in malicious propaganda.
During that period, Abu Saud
Hazrath, in his characteristic
manner preached the cardinal
principles of Islam in a wonderful

way to the brother community
in Tamil Nadu. His humble and
peaceful method mesmerized even
the religious bigots who were bent
upon spreading hatred and enmity
among the people. We should not
forget the fact that the respected
ulemas of the present day were
taught and trained by Abu Saud
Hazrath. His speeches and writings
reflected the greatness of Islam,
its message, peace and fraternity.
A very well planned and
calculated malicious propaganda
had been launched, not only in
India, but all over the world to
make it appear that the terrorism
was closely linked with Muslims.
Though it is the responsibility of
each and everyone to defeat this
false propaganda I emphasize
here that ulemas have greater
responsibility to deter this
propaganda.
Terrorism is against Islam
Terrorism is against the
tenets of Islam and further
Islam alone is competent and
capable of condemning and
containing terrorism because of its
fundamental principles of peace
and practice of religious amity.
Islam does not accept even an
iota of terrorism. We can’t deny
that some organizations under the
Islamic name create destructive
forces, though they use the name
of Islam regrettably they are not
for establishing Islam. Since their
view of Islam is based on faulty
principles, it prompted certain
officials to look down ulemas with
aversion and wrong notion. It
causes us further damage. It is the
duty of the former and the present
day ulemas of this madrasa to
preach that terrorism is against the
tenets of Islam and its practices
and they shall constantly strive
to preach and instill in the minds
of people the Islamic practice of
religious amity and communal
harmony.

“PADMA SHRI” DR. AHMED ALI
A DEDICATED MEDICAL SURGEON
V.M. Khaleelur Rahman
DR. AHMED ALI, a well known surgical gastroenterologist, hailing
from Ambur, a town in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, and practising
in Chennai has received the prestigious “PADMA SHRI” award for the
year 2011. He is associated with Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals in Chennai since
nearly forty years. Before coming over here, he had served in some
government hospitals. He has also made it a point to go to his native
place once a week to serve patients there. He is very popular among all
sections of the people. Allah has given him the ability and opportunity to
serve the people. After studying in Mazharul Uloom High School, Ambur
and Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi, he joined Madras Medical College,
Chennai and did his M.B.B.S. and then his M.S. and M.Ch. He was also
honoured as Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by Tamil Nadu M.G.R. University
sometime ago.
His childhood friends who studied with him in the Mazharul Uloom High
School, Ambur say that he was a genius and his ambition was to excel
in studies and prove his mettle and by Allah’s grace he was successful
in it. It is said that his father wanted him to pass IAS and become a
Collector but somehow medical science attracted him and made him
what he is today. According to his friends, he had an extraordinary
memory and was a voracious reader. He had won the hearts of his

teachers as an obedient, hard working and intelligent
student. He always came out with flying colours in all
his endeavours. Everyone particularly students have to
learn a lot from his success story.
When the news about Dr. Ahmed Ali being conferred
the prestigious Padma Shri award by Her Excellency the
President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil was
announced in January 2011, there was a jubiliation in
his native place Ambur and Chennai where he practises. Many felicitation
functions were held in his honour in both these places. .
In a felicitation function arranged at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, hospital
directors, colleagues, friends and students paid high tributes to him. He
was praised for his inborn leadership qualities, efficiency and diligence as
a teacher, making competent medical professionals and keeping everyone
smiling even during the toughest times. Mr. Dilip Mehta, executive
director of the hospital said that Dr.Mehta’s Hospitals is immensely proud
of his achievements.
To my knowledge, no other Muslim doctor from Tamil Nadu
has ever received any Padma award from the government so far.
Dr. Ahmed Ali is the first Muslim doctor to receive it in the state.
Dr. Ahmed Ali is a devoted Muslim, an excellent surgeon and a good
human being. We are proud of him. Let us congratulate and pray for his
good health, long life and success in all his endeavours.

‘Osama embarrassed Indian Muslims’
IN THE NAME OF GOD: India’s
Muslims feel a sense of injustice
at the way they have been sucked
into the terror narrative
For two decades now, Indian
Muslims have been victims of the
terror narrative in India, vulner-
able to suspicion, stigmatisation
and police harassment after every
attack. Osama bin Laden’s death
is unlikely to bring them much re-
lief. As long as anti-India groups
like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaishe-
Mohammed flourish in Pakistan,
Indian Muslims will get the short
end of the stick in a communalised
atmosphere, say writers and think-
ers from the community.
“Those who think that terrorism
will die now that Osama is gone
are living in a fool’s paradise,”
warns Kamal Farooqi, member, All
India Muslim Personal Law Board.
“There are groups that will use his
death and the way the Americans
humiliated his dead body to fan
the flames of anger and violence.
Osama’s death will not bring peace
for Indian Muslims. “
Aijaz Ilmi, chairman, editorial
board of the Kanpurbased Urdu
newspaper, Daily Siyasat, says:
“Terrorism in India has nothing to
do with Osama or al-Qaida. Unless
the ideology of terror prevalent in
the Af-Pak region is tackled, the
threat to India will continue and
Muslims will remain in the line of
fire here. “
Community leaders point out
that Indian Muslims never bought
into Osama’s ideology of terror as a
means to an end. While there may
have been some empathy for him
as a symbol of anti-American senti-
ment, his methods were abhorred
as anti-Islam. “Osama turned out
to be an embarrassment for Mus-
lims because of what they suffered
after 9/11, “ says historian Mushir-
ul-Hasan. “Not only did they have
to deal with suspicion and discrim-
ination, more Muslims have died in
the war against terror than non-
Muslims. “
There is a deep sense of injus-
tice at the manner in which Indian
Muslims have been sucked into the
terror narrative despite this, with

many bluntly pinning the blame on
a prevailing “communal mindset”.
Manzoor Alam, secretary general,
All India Milli Conference, doesn’t
mince his words. “There are plenty
of communal police officials. Even
if there’s a small blast, our agen-
cies blame the Indian Mujahideen
or other Muslim groups within
minutes, without evidence. Mus-
lims are picked up because of their
beards, their dress, their names,
purely on the whimsicality of the
police. That’s why they feel inse-
cure, “ he says.
Mufti Mukarram, imam of Delhi’s
Fatehpuri Masjid, agrees. “Indian
Muslims are not terrorists. They’ve
been branded as terrorists. Yes,
many have been arrested after ter-
ror attacks but nothing has been
proved against any of them. The
police target them first and then
tailor the investigation to try and
prove them guilty. Yeh farzi khel
hai (it’s all a game). “
Anger levels are particularly high
after recent revelations about the
bomb blasts in Malegaon, Ajmer
Sharief and Hyderabad’s Mecca
Masjid. Members of the RSS and
a breakaway group called Abhinav
Bharat have been chargesheeted
for these attacks. It raises ques-
tions about the role of the local
police in the immediate aftermath
of the attacks. It also underlines
the plight of dozens of Muslim
youths who have been languishing
in jail for several years for crimes
they didn’t commit.
Former Rajya Sabha MP Shahid
Siddiqi believes that Muslims are
paying the price for the creation
of Pakistan. “It has nothing to do
with Osama or terror. It is to do
with Partition. Muslims are viewed

with suspicion by the power elite
and the new middle class because
of Pakistan. There is an unstated
conspiracy to marginalise them
and keep them in poverty and ig-
norance, “ he insists.
Social activist Tanweer Alam
blasts the attempts to link terror-
ism to Islam. “I believe that terror
has no religion and it is unjustified
to link one community with terror.
Like every other community, there
are some bad eggs among Indian
Muslims too. It is wrong to hold
the entire community responsible,
“ he says.
He believes firmly that Indian
Muslims want to be and should be
mainstreamed. “Indian Muslims
should not be equated with Paki-
stani Muslims, “ he says. “Indian
Muslims are part of the Indian so-
ciety and Indian society is ahead
of and more mature than Pakistani
society. The global umma concept
has limited appeal here. Our politi-
cians must help to change the per-
ception of Indian Muslims instead
of using them as vote banks. “
According to Jamia Milia Islamia
University vice chancellor Najib
Jung, Muslims in India are increas-
ingly annoyed with efforts to link
them with global terror. “Indian
Muslims are looking to make a life
here. They are part of the Indian
collage. Like everybody else, they
too want to get ahead and pros-
per. Indian Muslims realised a long
time ago that Pakistan is no longer
part of the equation. Hopefully,
Hindus will realise it too so that
the growing communal divide is
bridged,” he says.

CIVIL SERVICES EXAM

There is no dearth of meritorious
candidates among Muslims. If
properly guided and helped,
they can shine and achieve their
goals. The results of the Civil
Services (Main) Examination 2010
announced recently show that
there are 31 Muslim names in the
list of 920 successful candidates
out of 5,47,698 who appeared for
the exam. It should please the
Muslim community even though
their share of success is only
3.36%.
