1. Learning Outcome: By the end of the lesson you will be

able to:
• Tell where seeds can be found on a plant and list
similarities and differences between seeds.

• Describe how new plants grow from seeds.
• List and describe plant responses.
• List the benefits of knowing about plant responses.
• Group plants based on their physical appearance.
• List and provide examples of the two main groups of
plants.
• List some of the ways that people use plants.

2. Objectives:
• Be able to tell where seeds can be found on a plant and list
similarities and differences between seeds.
• Be able to label the parts of a seed.
• Can describe how new plants grow from seeds.
• Be able to list and describe plant responses.
• Be able to list the benefits of knowing about plant
responses.
• Can group plants based on their physical appearance.
• Be able to list and provide examples of the two main
groups of plants.
• Can list some of the ways that people use plants.
3. Content:
Plants and Seeds
Plants and the Sun
Plant Responses
Grouping Plants
How People Use Plants

4. Materials:
Plants, seeds, pictures, fruits, notebook, pencil, magnifying
glass, bean seeds, watering can, dish, cotton wool, three potted
plants, magazines, scissors, glue and plant pots.

5. Activity for Learning:

Lesson 1

1) Health Inspection:
a. Nails

2) Presentation/Discussion:
- Most plants grow from seeds. Seeds can be found
inside the fruits of a plant.
- Fruits help to protect seeds
- Different plants have different types of seeds.

3) Science Concept:
- Where can you find the seeds?

4) Fixing Skills:
- Look at the picture son pages 14 and 15.
- Can you find the seeds inside each fruit?

5) Application:
Talk about how the seeds on this page are the same
and how they are different.
6) Evaluation:
Answer Workbook WV 4

Lesson 2

1) Review:
a. Where do the plants grow from?

2) Presentation/Discussion:
- A seed is surrounded by a hard covering, called a
seed coat. The seed coat protects the seed and stops the
seed from losing water and drying out.
- Inside the seed, there is a tiny plant that is waiting
to grow. The tiny plant is surrounded by stored food. The
tiny plant uses the stored food for energy when it first
starts to grow.

3) Science Concept:
- What are the parts of a seed?
- How does the seed coat help the seed?

4) Fixing Skills:
Do page 17 in student’s book.

5) Evaluation:
Draw a picture of a seed and label the stored food
and tiny plant on your picture.

Lesson 3

1) Motivation:
a. Why does a seed left in the refrigerator not
germinate?
2) Presentation/Discussion:
- When a seed gets water and warmth, it will start to
grow, or germinate. When a seed germinates, the
seed coat breaks open and the roots begin grow down
into the soil.
- The roots hold the growing seed in the ground so that
it is not washed away by water or blown away by the
wind.
- Next, a stem grows. As the stem grows, the first
leaves, called seed leaves, open and start to make
food for the plant. A young plant that has started to
grow is called a seedling. A seedling needs water and
air.
- It also needs sunlight so that it can make its own
food. If a seedling gets the things it needs, it will
grow to become a plant. Many plants will grow
flowers from which fruits will form. The fruits
contain seeds which will grow into new plants.
- The sun is the main source of light and heat on earth.
Without the energy from the sun, there would be no
plants.
- Plants are different from people and animals. They
do not eat food. They use the energy from sunlight to
change air and water into food.

3) Science Concept:
- What are the parts of a seed?
- How does the seed coat help the seed?

4) Fixing Skills:
The roots are the first plant part to grow from a seed.
How does this help the seed?
5) Evaluation:
What do seeds need?

Lesson 4

1) Review:
a. What are the needs of plants?

2) Presentation/Discussion:
- Plants a re living things. Like all living things, plants
respond to changes in their environment. A response
is the way that a living things acts when something
around them changes.
- One way that plants respond to change is by moving.
Show the picture of the sunflower and explain about
the movement of the sunflower towards the sun.
- Show a picture of a mimosa plant. Explain that when
something touches them, the leaves close up.
- Give some more examples and explanations:
1) Venus flytrap
2) Lotus
3) Fruits during hot season like watermelon,
durian, mangoes, and pineapple.
4) Fruits during cold season like longans, star
fruit, banana and grapes.
3) Science Concept:
-Think of some ways that plant responses can help a
plant.

4) Fixing Skills:
Answer WB 8 - 10

5) Evaluation:
Answer page 31 in your student book.
6) Homework:
Do page 30 in your home.

Lesson 5

1) Motivation:
a. Look at the pictures on page 34. Tell how the
plants in the pictures are the same. Tell how they
are different.

2) Presentation/Discussion:
- There are many different kinds of plants. Some have
large leaves, others have small leaves. Some have
brightly coloured flowers. Others do not have any
flowers at all.
- Scientist place plants into main groups. One group is
plants that produce flowers. They are called
flowering plants. The other group is plants that do
not produce flowers. They are called non- flowering
plants.

3) Science Concept:
-There are many different kind of plants.

4) Fixing Skills:
Observe the plants in the school yard. Group them as
flowering plants and non flowering plants.

5) Evaluation:
Answer WB 12 – 13

Lesson 6

1) Motivation:
Can you think of any other Thai festival when people
use flowers for decoration?
2) Presentation/Discussion:
- People use plants in many different ways. Plants are
often used to decorate our homes and gardens.
- Explain that in Thailand people use flowers to make
wreathes, to decorate rafts during the Loi Krathong
festival.
- Plants are used for food, oils, spices and for wood
products. (Show pictures to the students and give
examples of the plants).
- Bamboo is used to make many different products like
chopsticks and toothpicks.
- Paper is made from plants: Examples are newspaper,
books and umbrella.
- Fuel, rubber, clothes, linen and medicine also came
from plants.

3) Science Concept:
-What are the uses of the plants?

4) Fixing Skills:
Show a picture of a coconut tree. Explain to them the
uses of the parts of coconut.
1) Palm leaves and stems can be used to make
houses.
2) Outer husk of the fruits use to make rope,
door, mats and carpets.
3) Fruits contain liquids which people can
drink and flesh which people can eat.
