happen, in a modern, dynamic and accessible style. It sets out to cover national and
international subjects in depth, using wide-ranging analysis and debate to inform, entertain and
involve news and sports fans of all ages, with particular emphasis on 25 to 44 year olds. The
- 116 -
network also provides extensive live events coverage, supported by the BBC's global
newsgathering operations and our portfolio of sports rights.
Bob Shennan Controller Five Live, Sports Extra and Asian Network
Work History:
Bob Shennan is Controller of BBC Radio Five Live, Five Live
Sports Extra and the BBC Asian Network.
He was appointed Controller of Five Live in August 2000.
Bob started his career as a journalist for Hereward Radio. He has
held a variety of senior roles in BBC Sport including from 1998 to
2000 the Head of BBC Sport.
In this role he was responsible for overseeing all sport on BBC
ONE, BBC TWO, BBC News 24, BBC National and Local radio
and the BBC's Sport Online.
Under Bob Shennan's Controllership, Five Live reached a record
audience in 2002 of just under 7 million listeners. The station
celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2004.
Since late 2004 Bob has had overall Managerial responsibility for
the BBC Asian Network.
He introduced an evolution process that has seen the Network
increase its budget, appoint a new Management team and revise
the station's schedule to complete its transition to a National
Digital Network.
BBC 6 Music
BBC 6 Music is one of the BBC's digital radio stations, launched on 11 March 2002 and
originally codenamed Network Y. It was the first national music radio station to be launched by
the BBC in 32 years. It is only available via digital media: DAB radio, the Internet, various forms
of digital television and across northern Europe via the Astra 2D satellite. The station plays
"alternative" genres of music, including indie, classic rock, punk, jazz, funk and hip hop, and
generally provides an alternative to the more mainstream, chart oriented Radio 1 and Radio 2.
BBC 6 Music is the sister station of Radio 2.
BBC 7
BBC 7 is a digital radio station broadcasting comedy, drama, and children's programming 24
hours a day. It is the principal broadcasting outlet for the BBC's vast archive of spoken-word
entertainment, and was established specifically to enable the contents of the BBC Sound
Archives to be broadcast. Programmes qualify for broadcast on BBC 7 if they are either three
years old or more, or if they have previously been broadcast twice on their original station.
However, even if a programme fulfils these criteria, there may be copyright issues preventing it
from appearing on BBC 7.
The schedule spans the decades, from 1950s classics like the Goon Show to recent Radio 4
shows such as Little Britain. The station aims for a less formal approach than other speech
networks. The announcers who link the programmes are promoted as personalities in their own
right and are associated with themed blocks of programming. This was taken one step further
on 14th February 2005, when an hour long strand of comedy was introduced between 8am and
9am, presented by Richard Bacon.
The BBC Asian Network is a BBC national radio station orientated towards British Asian life,
culture and music in the UK and other topics from a British Asian perspective aimed at the
under 35's from that community but aiming for a broader appeal among all interested in British
Asian life whether Asian or not regardless of age.
Based in St Nicholas Place, Leicester, England with programmes also coming from Mailbox
studios at BBC Birmingham and BBC Television Centre, London; it broadcasts nationally on
- 118 -
DAB and digital TV via satellite, cable and Freeview; locally on AM in parts of the Midlands 24
hours a day and sometimes in some other parts of England locally: How to Listen.
In more recent years online streaming and Listen Again options have been introduced on the
main site for many of the station's programmes, however due to the music content of shows on
the BBC Asian Network podcasting programmes has so far not been a viable option for
copyright reasons.
