Introduction
Hi traveler, my name is Robert and first at all, I would like to thank you to download my “Barcelona, city”
guide. I only hope that it will help you to know better my city and to help you to plan your vacation.
To give you an overview, the structure is quite simple and the way I wrote it. I think it is important to tell you
how I organized this guide so you will understand my way of thinking and you may better find the needed
information although you have the index.
The script seems rush but I’m sure that you will have more than 1 day to visit Barcelona. ENJOY the reading!!!
Important
Before to initiate the journey, I would like to start first by 3 important points that you should know, so please
read it carefully. Each month, thousands of visitors come to discover this city and only few people live bad
experience so this section is not to scare you but to warn you.
1 - Avoid pickpocket
It is always very vexing to get stolen during our holiday, and to feel powerless to not be able to catch the thief
but more the feeling of guilty to not pay more attention of our surrounding and of ours belongings.
Barcelona is a great city but like many amazing places, there are thieves who don’t hesitate to steal everything
if you are not very careful.
At the end, instead to have a great vacation, you have a very bad experience because without money, what can
you do in the city ??? How can you pay the food and accommodation ??? What about the passport ??? You
have to go to the police station and to the consulate to report it.
The situation can be worst in a country in which you don’t speak the language because at Barcelona, if you
have the bad luck to be in this situation, there are no translator and, generally, the police has very poor level of
English.
I remember during a summer, my girlfriend got stolen at the beach and we went to the police to make our
declaration. Of course we hadn’t any problem but there was an English woman who tried to explain them that
someone stole her car and all her belongings but she didn’t speak Spanish, not very easy.
• You walk on la rambla street and avinguda del portal de l'àngel street
• You take the metro station, all stations around the downtown (catalunya, liceu, jaume 1,
drassanes…), sants station and espanya station
• You are on the beach
• You are inside a cyber café
• You are visiting the Barceloneta neighborhood, the Sagrada Familia and Plaza Catalunya areas
Always try:
• To put your wallet in a secure pocket (not at the back of your pants)
• To wear the backpack in front and not on the back
• To handle firmly the camera, camcorder and cell phone
• To wear the handbag firmly on your shoulder
Even when you are inside places like a cyber café, always have a look on your belongings. For example, if you
put your coat on the chair, thieves will stand behind to “dig”. So you need to be very cautious, below some
examples I saw.
• Thieves on scooter or on bike wrench the handbag so you have no time to react. Normally they do it
when they see that you wear it in a relax manner.
• Thieves give flyers for free entrance in a club, bar… but you have to raise very high your hand to take
it meanwhile the partner steals you.
• Thief trips you up but he catches you before falling and meanwhile saying sorry, he steals you. Stop
him before he disappears.
• Thief waits you to take some cash on ATM, before to be able to take the money, he will come to you
by putting a paper in front of your eyes asking you some help meanwhile the other hand takes it.
About the ATM, there are almost always 2 cash points, the street one and the office one. Use the office one
because you can lock the door and if there is only the street one, make sure that there are no suspicious
persons near to you.
If you are searching by internet to rent a flat from particular to particular, be careful of scammers. They put in
their ads a lovely description and nice pictures, asking you some data (personal and bank ones) and to pay first
but at the end, you will get nothing except to look for a hotel once you are in Barcelona. Normally, the true
owner will ask to make a deposit for the reservation by giving to you his/her own bank data (he/she will never
ask yours) and the rest when you are in the city.
2 - Dangerous areas
Like any cities, Barcelona is not safe in all districts, there are some neighbourhoods which are best to avoid
during night time, especially if you will be alone or only with your boyfriend/girlfriend.
The hot spot is located mainly in the narrow streets of Ciutat Vella district which include its neighbourhoods.
For me, it is a shame because this district hides some secret places and foreigners, who are brave enough to
play adventurers, have more chance to be stolen or attacked by a band than a local guy like me.
They take advantage of the fact that you don’t speak Spanish or Catalan in the moment to report the event to
the police but also, because you are a visitor, majority of policemen don’t speak English.
• try to stay in the main street like la rambla or in big place like plaza reial
• try to avoid absolutely narrow and dark streets.
In fact, if you see an empty street or few people, better to take another way even if you have to make a big
detour.
3 – Report an event
• by phone, call this number (+34)902102112 (english available) and after you have 48h to go to the
police station to firm your report – more information, check the official webpage.
• by internet, go to this crime report page (english version available) and after you have 72h to go to
the police station to firm your report.
Take note that if you don’t firm it, your denunciation will not be taken in account.
1 – The city
Barcelona is the capital of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia in Spain. It is surrounded by the Pyrenees and
the French frontier at the North, the coast of Mediterranean sea at the East, the Llobregrat River at the South
and the Sierra Collserola at the West.
This period allowed to make the Catalan be reborn as literary and cultural language in Catalonia and by this
way, divided the Castellan and Catalan languages with the other Autonomous Region of Spain.
The city lived 2 important factors which paralyzed its growth which were the crisis of 29 and the Spanish Civil
War. Barcelona has been bombarded many times and the general Francisco Franco, the dictator, entered in the
city in 1939.
After his death in 1975, the city was again democratic and new projects started to flourish at cultural and urban
level and made the city as you will know it in its present time.
Barcelona received in its heart the Universal Exhibition in 1888 and in 1929 and the Olympic games in 1992; it is
also the headquarter of the Union for the Mediterranean created by the association of the European Union,
the North African States and the Middle East in 2008.
The regional language is the Catalan, the Castellan (known also as Spanish) is not commonly used although you
will have no problem to communicate in this language. The English is used but not spread, you won’t have
problem in the downtown but in some neighborhoods, you may have and in some small villages, people only
speak Catalan.
The Catalan government has developed and improved a lot the infrastructure for disabled person in order to
make easier their life. Majority of traffic lights are equipped with a sound and public transportations are
equipped with a system of easy access.
The city has a damp and mild Mediterranean climate on which the temperature varies generally between 10
degree Celsius (50 degree Fahrenheit) in winter time and 30 degree Celsius (86 degree Fahrenheit) in summer
time.
The average annual of rainy days is 90 days and the rainiest month is between April and May. If you use Google
Earth, you can view it in 3D by using those coordinates 41° 23' 0" North, 2° 11' 0" East.
2 – The airport
The Barcelona airport has a surface area of 1.587,9466 ha and it is located in the municipality of El Prat de
nd
Llobregat at 10 km of the Southwest of the city. It is the main airport of Catalonia and the 2 one with high
st
traffics in Spain (the 1 one is Madrid).
The airport is European and not International but it tends to extend some offers from different international
companies. The Barcelona airport has 103 shops, 67 restaurants, VIP rooms, SPA center and a convention
center and it is composed of 2 terminals (1 and 2). The terminal 1 is one part of the terminal sur and the most
important terminal of the airport which has been inaugurated in June, 16th 2009.
Designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill Levi, it is part of the project ignited in 2003 called Plan Barcelona. This
plan is scheduled to end in 2010 and it also consists of some renovations of the site, mainly it will affect the
improvement of the access by road and by public transports (new metro line L9 and high speed train AVE – Alta
Velocidad Española), the increase of parking, new landing strips and a development of 150 hectares as service
areas.
This new urbanization will be used for the commercial and industrial development of the airport like the
construction of hotels, convention centers, business park…
The terminal sur will own 525.625 m2 and it will compose of 2 terminals (terminal 1 T1 and terminal satellite).
The terminal 1 is already operational and it accepts new huge aircrafts like the Airbus A380 and the other won’t
be ready before 2012 which will allow an additional capacity of 15 million travelers per year and it will connect
to the T1 by an underground train.
Due to the project, the old terminals (A, B and C) have been renamed as terminal 2 and divided as T2-A, T2-B
and T2-C. In a close future, the infrastructure will be restructured in one single terminal because for the
moment, the terminal C (new name T2-C) is separated from the terminal A (new name T2-A) and the terminal B
(new name T2-B). For passengers who need to go between the terminal 1 and the terminal 2, they can take the
terminal transit bus.
When you will land at the airport, you will arrive either at the terminal 1 or the terminal 2 depending of the
airplane company. After passing the control and picking your luggage, you will lead to the exit and from here,
you will have 4 choices to go to the downtown (time between 30-50 minutes) or to your hotel – taxi, car, train
or bus.
• By taxi, at each terminal exit, you have a taxi stop so you will have no problem to pick one. The price
to go to “plaza catalunya” will cost you between 32-37€ (1 luggage included) from T1 and a little
less from T2 – 1€ for each extra luggage and during night time, there is a 2€ extra for the service.
• By car, after picking up your renting car, exit the airport (you can’t miss it, there is only one way)
and:
o from the terminal 1, exit to C-31 Barcelona
o from the terminal 2, exit to C-32B Barcelona
nd
After, follow the indication “C-31/Barcelona/ronda litoral”, use the 2 line at the left side and keep
going on straight until you will enter to the city by “avinguda de la gran via” street. When inside
Barcelona, go straight and after crossing the tunnel, stay on the right line of “gran via de les corts
catalanes” street because you will turn right when you will reach the “passeig de gracia” street
(spot the Zara shop in front of you) and in few seconds, you will arrive at “plaza catalunya”.
• By train, until that the new metro line won’t be finished and operational, you will have to use the
train and this one is located near the terminal T2-A.
o From the terminal T2-C, you will have to reach it by walking from outside
o From the terminal T2-A and T2-B, from inside
o From the terminal 1, by taking the terminal transit bus.
The station is easy to spot because near the terminal T2-A, you will see the only bridge which
crosses the street. You will have to get off at “sants estació” station to make a change.
From here you will have to buy a metro ticket because the train ticket is incompatible, take the
metro L3 (direction “trinitat nova”) and get off at “catalunya” station.
The other solution is, instead to get off at “sants estació” station, to stop at “passeig de gràcia”
station and walk down the street about 10 minutes to “plaza catalunya”.
• By bus, at each terminal exit, you have a bus stop and you can take one of those public transports:
o Line 46. The bus 46 (5h-24h15) will bring you until “plaza espanya” and after you will
have to take the metro L3 (direction “trinitat nova”) or L1 (direction “fondo”) and to get
off at “catalunya” station.
o Line N17. The bus N17 (22h-5h) is a night bus which will bring you directly to “plaza
catalunya” – last stop.
o Aerobus. The aerobus (from 5h30h-1h) is the airport bus and it will bring you directly to
“plaza catalunya” – last stop.
The picture below shows the stop bus for N17 (1) and aerobus (2) when they arrive at “plaza
catalunya”.
INFORMATION
TIPS
• If you have few luggages, take the bus – it is simpler, cheaper and direct.
• On the contrary, if you have a lot of luggages but you want to save some money, take the bus until
“plaza catalunya” and just in front of the stop, there are a lot of taxis to bring you to your hotel –
you may save between 15-20€.
• For the metro/bus, buy the T-10 ticket instead of a single one because you will have 10 travels, save
minimum 5 euros and everybody can use the same ticket. It works on this way. As said before,
everyone can use the same one so you will just need to buy one. Each of you have to validate it,
meaning that once you will put it in the machine then pull it out completely from the ticket
validation machine, it will release the turnstile or the door to allow you through. Then give it to the
next person so that he/she can use the same ticket and so on until the last one. Each time someone
uses the T-10, it counts as a separate trip.
IMPORTANT
• Be careful at “catalunya” and “sants estació” metro stations because there are a lot of pickpockets,
read chapter “Important”.
3 – The harbor
Barcelona owns one of the most important harbors in Europe which includes 11 international terminals but
only 7 are for cruises. It has a maximum capacity of 220.000 tons which is the maxim foreseen for a cruise ship
like Oasis of the Seas or Independence of the Seas. Those cruise terminals are located mainly in 2 sections
which are:
The harbor gets used to receive cruise ships from different companies like Royal Caribbean, NCL, Costa
Cruceros, MSC, Travelplan, Pullmantur, Carnival… which have good pack offers for you to enjoy your travel on
sea toward Barcelona.
Also you can check the hotel Eurostars Grand Marina, located at the World Trade Center, and the hotel Royal
Ramblas (las ramblas 117). Both hotels have special price or pack offers for cruise people.
Terminal A, this terminal has been completely rebuilt from its original 3.600 m2 to 6.200 m2 which has cost 15
millions of Euros for the company Creuers del Port de Barcelona and of course, it fulfills all the requirements of
the International Ship and Port Security Code.
Terminal B, the company Creuers del Port de Barcelona spent again 10 millions of Euros to rebuild it, like the
terminal A, it is modern, secure, comfortable and it is in compliance with the International Ship and Port
Security Code.
Terminal C, this terminal has 4.000 m2 and with the help of the Port de Barcelona, the company Creuers del
Port de Barcelona has also rebuilt it and they have created a multifunctional space where they provide services
to different operations of turnaround and transit.
Terminal D, this terminal is also called Palacruceros (palacruises) because it owns 10.000 m2 and totally
designed by the architects Luigi Vicini and Andrea Piazza. The company Costa Crociere spent 12 millions of
Euros to build this modern installation of 2 floors where you can enjoy a lot of services like a mall, VIP room
and internet check point or even to enjoy a cocktail on the splendid terrace of Palacafé with view on the sea.
Terminal North, this terminal can receive a medium size cruise ship.
Terminal South, this terminal can provide services to 2 cruise ships and the maximum length is 253 meters
long.
Terminal East, this terminal is mainly used for transit operations between the terminal North and South.
Terminal Sant Bertran, also known as Terminal T and it is located at the World Trade Centre, it is used by
ferries to go to Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca) and when there are a lot of flows of cruises, it is
used for transit operations.
Terminal Port Vell, also known as Terminal M and it is located at Maremàgnum, it is the smaller one and
mainly used by smallest ships of capacity and length.
Terminal Genova, also known as Terminal G and it is located between Adossat Quay terminals and the World
Trade Centre; it is used by ferries to go to Genoa.
Terminal Drassanes, also known as Terminal Z and it is located near the World Trade Centre, it is also used by
ferries to go to Balearic Islands and in rare occasion, it can be used like terminal for cruise ships.
The picture below shows you each terminal according to their letters.
Now you have more or less an idea about the docks of Barcelona so no excuse to get lost!!!
INFORMATION
• If you plan to go to some Balearic Islands like Ibiza, Mallorca and/or Menorca, read Ferry for Balearic
Islands.
IMPORTANT
Sants station, also known as Barcelona-Sants, is the main station of Barcelona and Catalonia owning 14 tracks:
• 8 national ones
• 6 international ones
Moreover, the station is directly connected to the metro, the bus and the suburban trains, allowing by this way
an easy access to the downtown and the outskirts of Barcelona.
If you will enter in the city by this station, to go to the downtown, at “plaza catalunya”, you can either:
• take the metro L3 (direction “trinitat nova”) and get off at “catalunya” station.
• or take the taxi, count about 9 euros (1 luggage included).
France station is the second station of Barcelona and Catalonia owning 12 tracks welcoming national trains but
also international trains coming from France, Italy and Switzerland for example.
The advantage of this station is that it is located near to “plaza catalunya”, at few minutes from the Ciutadella
Park and the Born area.
If you will enter in the city by this station, to go to the downtown you can either:
• walk if you don’t feel tired and if you have few luggage, count more or less 25 minutes.
• take the metro L4 barceloneta (direction “trinitat nova”) and get off at “urquinaona” station.
• take the bus 14 (direction “bonanova”) and get off at “catalunya” stop.
• or take the taxi, count about 7 euros (1 luggage included).
NOTE
• Normally in 2016, national and international trains should arrive at the new station called
Barcelona-Sagrera (estació de Sagrera). It will own 320.000 m2 divided in 4 levels with direct
connection to the metro, the bus and the suburban trains.
TIP
• For the metro/bus, buy the T-10 ticket instead of a single one because you will have 10 travels, save
minimum 5 euros and everybody can use the same ticket. It works on this way. As said before,
everyone can use the same one so you will just need to buy one. Each of you have to validate it,

validation machine, it will release the turnstile or the door to allow you through. Then give it to the
next person so that he/she can use the same ticket and so on until the last one. Each time someone
uses the T-10, it counts as a separate trip.
North station, also known as Barcelona Nord, is the main station of Barcelona and Catalonia welcoming
national and international travelers. In fact, it is the only international station receiving companies like Alsa and
Eurolines so you will surely arrive here if you won’t come with a national bus.
Sants station is the second station of Barcelona and Catalonia welcoming only national bus. To go to the
downtown, you can either:
• take the metro L3 (direction “trinitat nova”) and get off at “catalunya” station.
• or take the taxi, count about 9 euros (1 luggage included).
TIP
• For the metro/bus, buy the T-10 ticket instead of a single one because you will have 10 travels, save

separate trip.
6 – The hotel
According to the script line, you should go to your hotel to drop off your luggages before to take your Spanish
breakfast so let’s find the place because I am sure you want to go to try the food!!!
• Cheapest hotels.
• Cheap hotels.
• Modest hotels.
• Best hotels.
• Apartment hotels.
• Gay hotels.
• Disabled hotels.
• Pet friendly hotels.
For each sub-sections, you will find details like the starting price, the address, the closer metro and a location
map.
• Cheapest hotels are places where you rent a bed and not a room. You will have to share the
bathroom but some services are included in the price like free wifi, breakfast…
• Cheap, modest and best hotels correspond respectively to 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stars hotels.
• Apartment hotels are a good option if you are 4 or more because you won’t feel squeeze during
your stay.
• Gay hotels are normally exclusively for gays and lesbians but some are hetero friendly like Axel
Hotels.
• Disabled hotels are places which have an infrastructure adapted for disabled persons. In this sub-
section, I didn’t include in the map for HCC hotels and AC hotels because they have different hotels
distributed in different neighborhoods.
• Pet friendly hotels are places which accept your mascot although most of them accept only small
animals.
For some hotels, particularly cheap ones, I know what they are worth because friends rented a room and they
gave me good feedback about their accommodation. For the rest, it is a mix of my experience to be able to see
the quality meanwhile enjoying a cocktail on their terrace, the feedback I heard and the search I did for friends.

INFORMATION
So now that you have your hotel and you feel more “light” and “free”, it is time to look for a place to take your
Spanish breakfast because it is still early.
7 – Breakfast
The place, where you can go to take your breakfast, won’t be a problem because there are a lot of bars.
Usually Spanish people order a coffee with milk or a natural orange jus (freshly squeezed) and a croissant, a
little sandwich or a toast with jam or with olive oil. During the weekend, it will be the typical “churros” with hot
chocolate that you can find in the special shop selling churros called “churrería”.
In winter time, you may encounter people who order a coffee with anisette or a coffee with spirits called
“carajillo” (brandy, cognac or rum). In Catalonia, the traditional breakfast consists of bread with tomato (pan
con tomate) served with sausages.
If you like chocolate, try the traditional Spanish chocolate, not the liquid one in bottle called “cacaolat” but the
home made one with milk and served into a cup - it is denser and sweater. If you are going to order it, be sure
to specify to the waiter/waitress that what you want it isn’t the cacaolat if not he/she will bring this one.
Except the normal and traditional one called “lisa”, the “ensaimada” can be found in 5 other variants:
The “cabello de ángel” is made from caramelized fibers of different fruits like melon, watermelon… and of
course, there are many more but those are my favorites.
• Bracafé (1), calle casp 2. It is a coffee franchise and in this one, they make good coffee.
• Buenas Migas (2), passeig de gràcia 120. An original franchise to take a good breakfast.
• Paul (3), calle roselló 235. I like this franchise, they have good things and a lot of choices.
• Farga (4), gran via corts catalanes 630. Another good franchise for breakfast.
• Forn de Sant Jaume (5), rambla de catalunya 50. A traditional pastry shop with good things.
Not in all Spanish bars, you can find them so you may need to go to a pastry shop first but take note that some
bars refuse that you eat something which is not coming from their kitchen.
Meanwhile you are enjoying your first Spanish breakfast, let’s take a look about the different options that you
may have to move in the city.
NOTE
• Normally Spanish people don’t give tip and if they do, maximum 50 cents.
• There is no maximum tip, it is up to you how much you want to give.
• Service is included in the bill so that’s why you don’t need to give tip.
TIP
• If you are going to buy foods for your breakfast, some bars will be friendlier if you take a table on
the terrace.
8 – Transport
To move in the city, you have a lot of choices and the first, of course, it is your feet and to not get lost, it is to
use a map, better if you have a GPS!!!
Generally, I use the public transport to go outside of Barcelona and inside the city, I always walk. In this section,
you will find the different means you have at your disposition to move. I started first by explaining the most
common ones to end with the alternative ones.
The tourist bus is a good way to discover the city because the bus will bring you to the most important point of
Barcelona like Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, Camp Nou…
The ticket is valid during all the day so you can get in and out of the bus every times you want and in any tourist
th st
bus stop. The service works every day of the year except December, 25 and January, 1 .
INFORMATION
You have 3 choices: metro, bus and tramway and all of them are in zone 1.
The tramway is located only in 2 sections, in the north and in the south of Barcelona. The bus and the metro
are simpler to catch since there are more stations around the city.
Generally, the service starts around 5h in the morning until around midnight for all of them and the metro
works 24h the Saturday and for those bank holidays : 1/1, 24/6, 15/8 and 24/9.
It exists also a night bus which works every day and the service starts between 23h and 5h30 in the morning.
The single ticket price costs 1.45€ and it is valid for all of them but it exists different types which may respond
better to your need and save your money.
Among the different options, there are only 3 kinds which may interest you and each one has its own
advantages.
T-10: this ticket offers you 10 travels for the price of 8.25€ and every one can use the same ticket. It will save
you money if you are going to travel a lot with the public transport and/or if you are not alone. It can be bought
at any metro station.
It works on this way. As said before, everyone can use the same one so you will just need to buy one. Each of
you have to validate it, meaning that once you will put it in the machine then pull it out completely from the
ticket validation machine, it will release the turnstile or the door to allow you through. Then give it to the next
person so that he/she can use the same ticket and so on until the last one. Each time someone uses the T-10, it
counts as a separate trip.
T-X days card: it exists 4 types (2-, 3-, 4- or 5-days card) and the main difference, except for the price, is the
validation period - the 2-days card is valid for 2 days, the 3-days card for 3 days… It will allow you to do
unlimited journeys in:
• Metro.
• Bus.
• Ferrocarrils de la generalitat urban lines.
• Renfe's rodalies train.
• And the tramway.
It can be bought at any metro station and the price is the following:
Barcelona card: it exists 4 types (2-, 3-, 4- or 5-days card) and the main difference, except for the price, is the
validation period - the 2-days card is valid for 2 days, the 3-days card for 3 days… and it will provide you the
following advantages:
It can be bought at the airport or at one of the tourism offices (there is one near the airport bus station at
“plaza catalunya”) and the price is the following:
• 2-day card is 27.50€ per person (children between 4 and 12 years old, 23.50€).
• 3-day card is 33.50€ per person (children between 4 and 12 years old, 28.50€).
• 4-day card is 38€ per person (children between 4 and 12 years old, 31€).
• 5-day card is 45€ per person (children between 4 and 12 years old, 35€).
The limited time, after validation of the ticket, is 1h15 so you can use the same one to move between the
different stations before to buy a new ticket or to validate a new travel.
8.3 – Taxi
All taxis in Barcelona are black and yellow colors so you can’t miss them. Generally, the price is quite cheap and
depending of your starting A point and your ending B point, the price will vary but let’s say that the cost will be
around 5€ from one neighborhood to the next one.
Like you can guest, the price is more expensive than the public transport but if you are 4 people for example
(normally it is the maximum of persons), you will divide the price by 4 so at the end, the taxi may be cheaper
depending where you want to go.
• Go to a taxi stop.
• Call by phone the central and ask them to send a taxi to pick you up.
• Or catch a taxi directly wherever you are in the street.
There are a lot of taxi stops around the city but the best will be to catch one directly on the street. For that, you
just need to stay where you are and to raise your hand when you spot a free taxi.
To know if the taxi is free or not, take a look on its roof and if you see a green light, it means that it is free. If
you want to call them, dial (+34)933033033 and take note that during night time, there is a 2€ extra.
Visiting Barcelona, it is not only with the bus, metro, taxi… it exists other ways to do it. Some will ask you to do
some efforts like the bike and some will ask you to not have vertigo like the helicopter.
If you decide to use one of those alternative transports, you will discover this city from another point of view
and may be more interesting.
8.5.1 – Bike
The Catalan government has put in place a bike service called “bicing” but unfortunately, it is only for citizen
because you have to subscribe for 1 year minimum.
Since you are coming for holiday, you can’t use this service but don’t worry, almost in each neighborhood,
there is a place where you can rent a bike from the simple to the extravagant design - below a little list of
places.
• Biciclot (pg maritime de la barceloneta 33, phone 932219778) (1), they have different time schedule
according to the seasons and the starting price is 5.5€ for 1h.

to:
• Inecia (calle roger de flor 10, phone 934869256) (1), the shop is opened from Monday to Friday at
10-14/17-20h30 and Saturday at 11-14/17-20h30 and the starting price is 5€ for 1h
• Cooltra (passeig joan de borbó 80-84, phone 932214070) (2), it is opened every day from 10-20h
and the starting price is 5€ for 1h - the shop is more specialized for renting motor/scooter.
8.5.3 – By earth
• Gocar (freixures 23bis, phone 902301333) (1) to rent a mini two-seater car guided by GPS, open

4h and for 4 persons minimum.
• Las Golondrinas (phone 934423106) (4), the departure is at “portal de la pau” (in front of the Colón

the starting price is 45€/person for 5 minutes – you have to call first to reserve.
INFORMATION
• Barceloneta
• Raval
• Barri Gòtic
• Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i Ribera
La Ciutat Vella is the district where sometimes, taking
my rollerblade and going very fast, I like to “dodge”
people in the “avinguda del portal de l’àngel”!!!
Until now, I never hit someone and hope it will
continue in this way.
I can only do it during Sunday and one day, one
tourist guy recorded me with his video camera. Why
Sunday? Well because the other days, the street is so
crowded that even with my own feet, sometimes I
have difficult to walk. Why so crowded? Well
because it is full of shops and Spanish people, like
foreigners, like shopping. I can buy shoes, clothes,
perfume, foods...
“La rambla” street is close to this one and I take it
only to go to “La Boqueria” to eat something in one of the bar restaurants. La Boqueria is the famous fresh
market at Barcelona where I can smell fresh seafood and the Iberian ham, find some exotic fruits... a good
place to buy food or to eat something in one of the bars (normally very crowded and the waiting can be long).
By taking first the little “bonsuccés” street and after “elisabets” street, I go directly to the “Contemporary Art
museum” and the “Contemporary Culture Center” located at “plaza del angels”. In the middle of the way,
there is a nice square “plaza de vicenç nartorell” to take a drink.
In night time, the “joaquín costa” and “rambla del raval” streets are animated with its particular
bars/restaurants and both are where Spanish people like to go to have fun. And next to it, during day time,
since I am a fan of electronic things, the “ronda de sant antoni” street is full of computer, mobile, camera...
shops.
Down “la rambla”, during the weekend, there are little souvenir and antic markets that my girlfriend is very
fond but not me and it is close to the port. Crossing the bridge, I arrive at “Maremagnum”, the little mall of the
port where in night time, the first and last floor are taken by night clubs and bars. Sometimes there are some
street exhibitions like tai chi for example.
I still don't go yet to the IMAX, maybe one day!!! It is a big theater located in this mall to watch documentary
film in 3D and next to it, there is the “Aquarium museum”. If you like fish, it is nice to see and you can record
penguin!!!
The other museums in “la rambla”, that you can visit, are “Maritime”, “Wax” and “Erotic”. The “Picasso”
museum is located at the street “montcada 15-23”. One place I like to go and it is next to the Wax museum, it
is a bar called “el Bosque de las Hadas” for its particular decoration and each 30 minutes, they simulate a little
storm and if you are cursed, you can see ghosts in the mirrors!!!
If it is not too late, I walk until the Barceloneta beach or to the “Parc de la Ciutadella”. It is in this neighborhood
that I renovated my NIE or for European foreigners who wanted to live here to request it. With the time, I don’t
like so much this beach because it is very dirty and now I prefer to go outside of Barcelona to swim.
And if it is already night time, I prefer to walk until “Born” (in the “Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i Ribera”
neighborhood) to dine somewhere. It is one of the popular places of the city and mainly, I choose a place
between “argenteria” street and “passeig del born” according to what we feel... tapas, pizza, bio, fondue...
People come here also to have fun since there are a lot places to dance, to drink a mojito... well to pass a funny
night until 3 AM.
If you go at the end of “passeig del born”, direction to the Parc de la Ciutadella, you will see a big place under
construction – it is the new and future market of the neighborhood but during the work, they found out
archaeological remains!!!
And if you want to end the night with a “hot” company, go back to “la rambla” street and just look for the
“suitable” woman but everything has a price!!!
La Ciutat Vella is the old district of Barcelona and it is full of pickpockets. During night time, I will not say it is
very dangerous but it can be. Let’s say that you have more probability to be attacked and stolen than the other
districts. Hopefully, nothing happens yet to me and it is very a shame because there are a lot of nice places
hidden in its little and dark streets to be discovered. During day time, you can walk quietly but keep an eye on
your bag!!!
• Sant Antoni
• Nova Esquerra de
l’Eixample
• Antigua Esquerra de
l’Eixample
• Dreta de l’Eixample
• Sagrada Familia
• Fort Pienc
I am living in this district which is
very famous for its “plaza
catalunya” and each time I have
to travel, I go there to take the
airport bus. A big place with
fountains where in the middle, it is crowded with pigeons!!! Foreigners and even Spanish people give them
food so that they can take a picture surrounded by them and above all, be careful about their shit.
I go often there to buy things since one of my favorite shops FNAC is located near it. The “rambla de
catalunya”, “passeig de gracia” and “avinguda diagonal” streets are full of shops (Zara, Mango, Adidas, Chanel,
Gucci, Sony...) and if I can, I always prefer to walk in “rambla de catalunya” because there are more trees and
nicer than the others. Sometimes, there is some art exhibition all along this street!!! You will find more shops
by going up the” avinguda diagonal” street than going down.
One day I was looking to buy a laptop and I passed almost all day between FNAC and the “sepúlveda” street in
“Sant Antoni” neighborhood to compare prices. The “sepúlveda” and “ronda de sant antoni” streets are
famous to have computer shops selling very cheaper and the competition is very tough between them – it is
good for us.
The other famous thing in this neighborhood is its market called simply “Mercat de Sant Antoni” located at
“comte d'urgell 1” with a particular architecture where you can find foods, clothes, stamps...
The other market I like and it is worth to go is “Mercat Encants Vells Fira de Bellcaire” (plaza glòries catalanes
8) in “Fort Pienc” neighborhood close to the mall “Las Glories”. It opens only on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
and Saturday from 9h to 18h and here I can find anything... in fact it is a flea market.
Just close to it, I go often to take pictures of the Agbar tower and La Sagrada Familia. The Agbar tower is more
beautiful at night with its blue and red colors and if you are lucky, during December, there is a light show.
In spite that the basilica is still under construction and it will not end before 2026 according to the schedule, it
is worth to take a look, not only for the many details of the 2 different façades but once inside, you will see
something very but very beautiful. The other funny thing to do, it is to climb in the tower and to play hide and
seek.
Around “Esquerra de l’Eixample” and “Dreta de l’Eixample” neighborhoods, there are a lot of nice places to
lunch/dine, some are more expensive than the others and here a little list:
I can’t list all my favorites places if not I will have to write another book!!! And for the moment, to tell the
truth, it is not my intention. The other thing to not forget, take pictures of the 2 buildings of Gaudi at “passeig
de gracia” – casa Batlló and casa Milà, a pure wonder.
During night time to have fun, I go often to night clubs and bars located at “maria cubi” street crossing
“sagues” and “amigo” streets. Majority of clubbing are free entrance and I like the particular party ambiance
around this area. If you want to mix with gay/lesbian party, just walk the long of “muntaner” street and/or go
to one of the Arena clubs – the most famous one is located at “gran vía 593”.
Normally Spanish people prefer to take a drink in some bars before to go to club between 1h and 2h. Before
this time, no ones are inside except the bar man, waiter/waitress... well employees and some foreigners.
I went times ago but now less, it is to walk from down to up the long of “balmes” and “aribau” street until
crossing “avinguda diagonal” street. When you arrive at “diagonal”, cross the street and around this area, it is
full of night clubs (some are not free and you have to pay around 10€ - 1 drink included) and to have fun until
6AM!!!
• Parc de Montjuïc
• Poble Sec
• Font de la Guatlla
• Marina de Port
• Marina del Prat
Vermell
• Bordeta
• Hostafranc
• Sants
• Sants Badal
• Zona Franca, Port
It was between 18h and 19h, me
and my girlfriend was walking
quietly and peacefully in the
“Jardins de Laribal”, one of the
nice Montjuïc gardens and
suddenly we saw a little cat who
was watching at us. When we
tried to approach him, he ran away just to hide behind a little bush with his other 3 brothers!!! Well after
playing with them a while, we let them alone with their mother.
I like to take a walk in Montjuïc because it hides a lot of nice places and gardens. And by going up, there is more
chance to have a fantastic view on the city. It is in this area that I can find the Olympic Game Stadium (passeig
olympic), the botanic garden of Barcelona (doctor font i quer 2), the Greek Theatre (passeig de santa
madrona), Palau Sant Jordi (passeig olympic) where there are lot of concerts...
• Montjuïc tourist bus (phone (+34)934414982) and it exists 2 routes (blue and red) for a price of 3€.
The blue begins and ends at “plaza espanya” and the red, at “portal de la pau” and you can get on
or off as many times as you wish.
• Air ferry from the port (phone (+34)932252718) and the price is around 12.50€. It is a cable car
transport service linking the Tower of Sant Sebasti (Sant Sebasti beach) with the Jaume I Tower
(World Trade Center) and Miramar (Montjuc mountain).
• Montjuïc funicular and the price is the same as the metro, you can take it at the metro station Paral-
lel.
• Aerial cableway of Montjuïc and the one way ticket is around 6.50€, it exists only 3 stations (parc
Montjuïc, mirador and castell).
Also around this area, there are a lot of museums like Salvador d'Història Natural (Salvador of Natural History -
passeig migdia 187), Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (Art National of Catalonia - mirador palau nacional 6),
Fundació Joan Miró (Joan Miró Fundation - avinguda miramar 1)... And last thing, the cemetery is in north side
so if you don’t want to see ghosts, try to not fall in it!!! For a list of all museums, read Museums at Barcelona.
Really it is a very nice place to visit and you can easily pass more than 1 day to discover everything. From 19h to
22h, at “plaza de carles buigas”, you can enjoy a water and light fountain show called “magic fountain”.
This place is in front of the “Nacional d'Art de Catalunya museum” and if you want, watch the little extract of
this show by clicking here.
The “plaza España” is well known for its many international exhibitions like automobile, gastronomy, travel,
wedding... and the “sants” station is not far away from this place where sometimes I have to go there to take
my train to go to Madrid, Granada... It is the central point for all national trains in and out of Barcelona and also
if you come/go from/to France.
If you take a look on the map, you can see that the west side is totally grey and it is called “zona franca”, an
industrial zone where the only excitement is to go to work!!!
• Corts
• Maternitat i Sant Ramon
• Pedralbes
The district of the riches, well for me and for
soccer fans, it is where you can visit the “Camp
Nou stadium” and its museum (arístides maillol
12-18).
Almost every Sunday (if sunny), I skate from my
place to the “Parc de Pedralbes” located at
“avinguda diagonal 686”. Inside this lovely park,
there is the pottery museum and around it, it is
one of the rare places in Barcelona where the
streets are made for skaters.
This district is more famous for students since the
university of economy, architecture, biology... are
around this area. Also for scientists because the
research center of biomedicine, ecology... are
around here.
“Avinguda d’albert bastardas” street is the other “hot” point in case if you need to find someone to pass the
night with you.
• Sarrià
• Tres Torres
• Sant Gervasi, Galvany
• Sant Gervasi, Bonanova
• Putxet y Farró
• Vallvidrera, Tibidabo i Planes
Each time I walk at “rambla de catalunya” street to
“avinguda diagonal” street, I can’t miss the building
located at the horizon, more when it is night time
since it is lighted. Do you notice it??? Well if you
never come at Barcelona, I guess you don’t have any
clues about what am I saying.
The building is the temple of "Sagrado Corazón de
Jesús" (Sacred Heart of Jesus) at Tibidabo. Since I
don’t have kids, I don’t go so often there. Sometimes
just to take a great picture on the city because there
is an impressive view since it is up to the mountain.
Why I said “kids”? Well because there is a theme
park for children and during weekend, it is quite
crowded and it is very hard to find a place to park the
car. There is nothing up there for adult except visiting
the church and the “Casa Verdaguer museum”. The
museum is in fact the house of the famous writer Jacint Verdaguer.
In my opinion, it is not worth to visit them and if you don’t have kids, the only satisfaction you can have it is to
take great photos. To go there, you have 4 possibilities:
• By car, the easiest way is to take “via augusta” street, go up until it crosses “ronda de dalt – general
vives” street and after just follow the indications.
• By Tibibus bus (only operates when the Tibidabo Amusement Park is open) and it runs between
“plaza catalunya” and “plaza tibidabo”.
• Tibidabo funicular, it is a transport by cable car (blue tram) from “plaza dr andreu” to the
amusement park.
• By railway tramvia blau, you have to take first the metro L7 and stop to the last station “avinguda
tibidabo”.
To go there, take the FGC train S1 or S2 catalunya station to peu del funicular station (get in the last wagon
because the platform is very short and the first one stays in the tunnel), after the funicular to the last stop and
then the bus 111 to mentora alsina stop.
For more information about those public transports, I invite you to check the official TMB website.
The great thing to do in this district is the science museum “CosmoCaixa” (isaac newton 26) during day time
and nightclubs and bars during night time.
The entrance cost around 20€ but it is free the Sunday. There are a lot of things to visit and sometimes, there
are conferences that you can participate. I can pass easily all my day inside, discovering extraordinary things,
playing with the experimentations, visiting the tropical life which has been built to simulate a fauna... well a lot
of interesting things...
To go to the museum, from plaza catalunya, take the FGC train L7 to last stop, after the blue tram (tramvia
blau) to avinguda tibidabo (romà macaya-dr ribas perdigó) stop and then, cross the street and walk up the
teodor roviralta street located behind the building.
During night time, I like to go to “plaza doctor andreu” – up to “avinguda tibidabo” street where I can take a
nice cocktail in one of the bars in this place and to enjoy a lovely view of the lighted city. And after, around 2h,
go to dance at one of the clubbing around this area like Danzatoria (avinguda tibidabo 61) to end my night.
• Vallcarca i Penitents
• Coll
• Salut
• Vila de Gràcia
• Camp d’en Grassot i Gràcia Nova
I will say that it is my favorite district because it has
been able to keep a lot of its traditions and
celebrations with a strong Catalan spirit. It is very
“alive” and everything can be found in there. Before
it was a small village but in 1897, it has been
integrated to be part of the city and it changed from
village to district.
Shops are mainly located at “gran de gracia” street
and I like to walk in “verdi” street where I can find
restaurants, bars, shops, movies in original version,
supermarket... In spite that there are many squares
like “plaza del sol”, “plaza del diamante”... I only
prefer 2 – “plaza de la virreina” and “plaza de rius i
taulet” (known also as “plaza de la vila de gràcia”).
The first one because it is close to a bar at “santa
creu” street (there is only one so if you want to go,
you can't miss it) where I go often to take my tea and
during summer time or sunny day, I can drink a coke
by seating on one of the terraces and enjoying the
heat. The second one is a good place to eat
surrounded by trees and in the center, a clock tower
in front of the mayor of Gracia which gives it a kind of charm. Sometimes concerts are organized in both places.
The other streets where I can go to buy things are “via augusta”, “travessera de gracia” and “asturies” streets.
Of course there are many more like “bailèn”, “corsega”... but those are the ones I go often and with that, it is
enough to find what I need.
One of the best cinema theaters “Bosque” (rambla de prat) is located in this district because it is not easy to
find a good place to watch a movie with a good surround and a big screen but only in Spanish version. For
people who don’t master the language, they can go to “Verdi Cinema” (verdi 32 and torrijos 49) to watch them
in original version but they don’t put blockbuster movies – only one time I saw that they didn’t respect their
rule and it was for Matrix!!!
It is not easy to walk and even local people get lost in this area. Luckily for me, when I arrived at Barcelona in
2000, my first apartment was in this district so I learned quickly its secret and now I can go without the help of
a map!!!
The “passeig de sant joan” is a good place for me to skate but only between “avinguda diagonal” and
“travessera de gracia” because the center is a pedestrian zone, I just have to try to not fall on someone !!!
The famous “Parc Güell” of Gaudi can be found at “olot” street, after climbing up the “larrard” street which
has almost an angle of 50 degrees (well in fact all streets which bring me to the main entrance), I can enjoy this
wonderful park with its different areas like the wave tunnel, the snake place, the “hipóstila” room (room of the
th
100 columns)... And going up a little more, a great view on the city.
Famous to be a party area, Gràcia is very animated during night time and it can be very crowded in particular
during the “fiesta de Gràcia” in august. Like you can guest I go often there to take a cocktail and/or to dine.
There are many kinds of foods and I can choose between Catalan, Indian, Arabic, Argentina, Japanese, French...
all around the “verdi” street. If really you want to melt and know Spanish culture and people, this district is a
good place.
I like to go to:
• Salambo (torrijos 59) to take a drink and sometimes I eat there (Catalan meal)
• La Plaça del Diamant (verdi 11) to eat good cheese tapas
• Teatreneu (terol 26) to eat a snack or to take a drink (this place is particular since they have a
theatre room but majority of the spectacles are in catalan)
• Alabina (verdi 40) to eat a Turk pizza
• Bo or Amélie (plaza de la vila de gràcia 11 - known also as plaza rius i taulet) to eat Spanish food...
Well there are many more and restaurants are cheap except Salambo which, for me, is expensive for the kind
of food (nothing particular) and in comparison with the quarter. One counsel, pick one and let yourself guide by
its specialty and above all, don’t be scare about its decoration because sometimes even if the place looks old or
strange like “Taverna La Llesca” (terol 6), it hides good foods.
• Museu Palmero Arte (judea 2), an exhibition of art and painting of Alfredo Palmero.
• Museu Tennis (passeig vall d'hebron 196), an exhibition about the tennis.
• Museu de Carruatges del Foment (plaza josep pallach 8), an exhibition about old cars, chariots and
carriages.
• Museu Africà Daniel Comboni (feliu i codina 59), an exhibition about art and photo in Africa of
Daniel Comboni.
The night life is around “plaza santes creus” where there are nice places to take a cocktail and that’s it!!! It is all
I can tell you about this district for now, at the end it is better to stay at the downtown.

There is nothing interesting in
this district except to live in an
area with Spanish people but it is
what I am doing right now except
that I am in a quarter more
popular !!!
The only thing which can attract
me in this zone, it is the open air
mall “Heron City” located at
“avinguda rio de janeiro 42”. I
went times ago and this place
should be the most attractive and
the most entertainment
commercial center at Barcelona
but for me, they have failed
somewhere or somehow.
I am totally disappointed and this mall is completely a failure but at least people who live in this district have
somewhere to go to watch a movie in a good condition – with good sound and good screen without to go until
the downtown.
Of course, like any other districts, there are good places to take a drink and to dine but not so much like Gràcia,
Eixample, Sants... and if I decide to go, I can’t go in and out in different bars but choose one or 2 unique places
to have fun all night.
• Navas
• Sagrera
• Congres i Indians
• Sant Andreu
• Bon Pastor
• Baró de Viver
• Trinitat Vella
I will stay all the day, even the full week,
just to do shopping if I was rich!!! Well if
I was rich maybe I won’t go there and
maybe I won’t live at Barcelona.
La Maquinista is the bigger commercial
center in this city and it is located at
“passeig potosí 2”. It has everything that
you need for and it has been built in a
way to prevent people to leave the place
only when it has to close. Open from 10h
to 22h, you can find of course shops, go
to cinema, go to play bowling, do ice skating... even some exhibitions and events for children and adults are
organized all along the year !!!
Built in different floors, some parts of the mall are covered and some are open air so even during rainy day, you
can continue to shop until closure.

On the section "9.4- Les Corts, district 4”, I told you that I skate in the “avinguda diagonal” street but by going
up. This district is where I go down and I prefer this part than the other for those following reasons:
• It is the only district where the “avinguda diagonal” has a pedestrian area in middle from “plaza
glories” until the end.
• The center area has been renovated and now, skating is more a pleasure because of a better
smooth surface.
• And the last one, because I don’t need a lot of effort since I am going down. Of course I have to go
up but to go back home, I take another way.
I feel great and it is cool skating meanwhile listening music, more when the day has a beautiful blue sky. Close
to “plaza glories” and in front of the Agbar tower, there is the mall “Las Glories” and at the end of “diagonal”
street, the mall “Diagonal Mar” and the “Forum” where a lot of exhibitions and events are organized like
Barcelona Extreme Sports Festival or The Environment.
I like the commercial center Diagonal Mar, a mall of 3 floors where the movie theater is one of the best of
Barcelona. The first and second floor are for clothes, perfumes, toys, electronic... and the last one is more for
entertainment – restaurants, cinema, game shop, bowling, billiard, pool...
Very close to the beach, if I get tired skating, I can go to swim. In this part of the beach, some people practice
the nudism since they are few people. If you prefer to be with more people, just go to the area at “la Vila
Olímpica del Poblenou” close to the port.
Normally, when I am at the end of “diagonal”, I go back a little until I cross “rambla del poblenou” street. A
shopping street of the neighborhood and it is here where I can find the best “horchata” and in night time, line
can be huge!!! It is a Spanish drink based on water, sugar and tiger nut or almond. In fact, you can find it
everywhere in the city so you don’t need to go so far away to try it but if really you want, the place is very easy
to spot because there is only one.
Taking this street, I go directly to the beach. This part is called “playa del bogatell” (bogatell beach) and usually,
it is quite crowded from this side until “La Barceloneta” neighborhood. “La Vila Olímpica” area has been
developed for sportsmen/women to have entertainment during the Olympic Games in 1992. The “Yelmo
Cineplex Icària” (salvador espriu 61) is a movie theater with 15 rooms where people can watch films only in
original version and it is located inside the little mall “El Centre de la Vila”.
Between “bogatell” beach and “moll de gregal” alley, there is no way to skate all along the beach... well there
is a way but it is not done for skaters so I have to take “passeig de garcia faria”, “passeig de calvell” and after
“salvador espriu” street until “arquitecte sert” street and go back to the beach. From here, no problem to
skate meanwhile watching the sea and “passeig marítim de la barceloneta” street is very famous for skaters -
every Friday night (it not raining) at 22h, a group of skaters is reunited there and during more or less 2h or 3h,
they skate around the city with some security measures.
If you don’t like them, just walk around and there are more.
CONCLUSION
To close this section “9 – Districts and neighborhoods”, I would like to add that Barcelona, for me, is a
beautiful city done for consuming where in each corner, I can find a bank to get cash and to spend it for
something useful or not.
In front of the airport bus station at “plaza catalunya”, there is a tourist point where you can buy tickets for the
touristic bus, take a map of the city and some useful information.
The best part is its good weather during the year, rarely snowing and raining few days, the temperature varies
generally between 10 degree Celsius (50 degree Fahrenheit) in winter and 30 degree Celsius (86 degree
Fahrenheit) in summer but with a high humidity rate which can rise easily until 90%. This makes that the cold
seeps into your bones and the heat makes you sweat until a sticky feeling.
Spanish people love animals and majority of them, when they walk with their dog, they pick up their shit to
throw it to the closest trash can. And in some part of the city, some streets stink and it is not from the garbage
but more from sewers. I still remembered when friends asked me “why Barcelona stinks?” and “why there is no
shit in this city in spite of numerous dogs?”.
The life cost has double, even triple but still cheaper in comparison with other European cities - in fact it has
increased a lot since the euro. Some Spanish people have not got used yet of this currency and in some shops,
they still display the price in pesetas between parentheses.
The beach at Barcelona is not very clean, I will say “dirty” (sea and sand), either to swim or to take a sun bath, I
prefer to go to its outskirts like Sitges, Masnou, Castelldefels... well the section near to the forum is better than
the one in Barceloneta and Vila Olímpica neighborhood.
But it doesn’t mean that I don’t go!!! From June to September, you can find beach bars and the best section is
the Vila Olímpica one. You can lunch and/or dine there, sometimes there are some fire spectacles by jugglers
during night time and that is the best part. I like to take a cocktail meanwhile sleeping on one of the loungers, it
is very cool because I can enjoy the breeze of the sea and it is very appeasing since the summer is very hot.
One of the main and big problems for foreigners at Barcelona is the language. Indeed, the national language in
Catalonia is the Catalan but the national one in Spain is the Castilian. Of course, it is best to learn the Castilian
because it can be used in many countries and the Catalan only in this Autonomous Region.
I speak Castilian fluently but Catalan I understand and read but not speak it. I don’t have any issue in my
current life but for example, finding a job is harder if you have this handicap except if you are looking a position
in an international company. The other thing which can be disturbing, depending of the person, it is that when
you talk to a local person in Castilian, he/she answers you in Catalan and keeps on this language even if you say
you don’t understand and some Catalan people don’t speak Castilian or have difficulties!!! Worst they can
ignore you if you don’t speak their language.
So far I don’t have this problem even if I told the person that I don’t understand what he/she is saying, he/she
will switch it in Castilian but I know that some friends faced this issue. Generally, people are very friendly but
exception can be encountered!!!

After to spend all the morning walking and visiting wonderful architectures and museums, you have to
recharge yourself with very good foods, no!!!
Take note that the lunch time is at 14h and in some districts, shops are closed at this time until 17h so you have
plenty of time to enjoy your meal before to keep going on with the script.
Barcelona offers a lot of specialties so you can choose between Chinese, Japanese, Mediterranean, French,
American, Indian, Thai, Arab… and of course Spanish food.
Tapas are considered like a kind of snack/appetizer before the lunch, I classify them like a “pre-entrance”. You
order small portion of food or one piece, for example a portion of Russian salad or a piece of bread with ham.
Generally the price is between 1.50€ and 2.50€ and in spite that it is not really considered like a main dish,
sometimes I prefer to eat only tapas.
Paella is one of the traditional Spanish foods and normally, it is eaten during lunch time and not during dinner
time. It exists different kinds like seafood, meat, rabbit… and generally, restaurants only accept order if there is
a minimum of 2 persons and you will have to wait between 30 and 40 minutes for the chief to prepare it. Don’t
be fooled by places which propose you the paella for 1 person, it will cook by microwave and ready in 1 minute.
If you don’t like rice, try “fideu”. It is a kind of paella but instead of rice, it is cook with a kind of short and thin
spaghetti. To accompany it, order a “sangria”, it is the typical alcoholic Spanish drink and it exists 2 different
ones:
Normally the ingredients are sugar, brandy or cognac, lemon, orange and red wine or cava/champagne.
Other specialties:
There are much more foods you can eat so I am not going to make you wait longer, following some places I like
to go for my lunch time.
All those restaurants are tapas places except “Marino Moncho’s”, it is one of the best places to eat a paella and
“La Boqueria”, it is the famous market of Barcelona, inside you will find small bars to eat plates or tapas. The
bad thing about the market it is that you will have to wait but it is worth to be patient and one counsel, spot
the seats where people will leave soon and keep watch as a rabid dog!!!
There is one thing I do sometimes, it is to buy food in supermarket or to take away and to go to lunch to the
“Ciutadella” park, especially when the weather is very nice because after eating, I can do like most part of the
Spanish people, take a good snap!!!
NOTE
• Bread is not free and in some places, they will bring it even if you don’t order it so if you are not
going to eat it, tell it to the waiter/waitress if not they will bill you.
12 – Shopping
Barcelona is full of banks where you can retrieve money and full of shops where you can spend money. In spite
that you can find the same brand in your country, you may not find the same model since companies design
their clothes according to the market of the country.
Moreover, try to buy Spanish brands because it is cheaper in Spain than in your country. It may sound stupid
this comment but I have a lot of friends who asked me that.
So what you want to buy? Depending of your wishes, you will have to go at some particular places or just spend
your day in the downtown. I will describe the different sections where you can go classified by topics. Just keep
in mind that my starting point will always be “plaza catalunya”.
12.1 - Cloth
If your goal is to buy clothes, you have a lot of options, every street has a shop which sells famous brand or
personal brand. When you are in the “plaza catalunya”, you are already surrounded by them. Let’s say that in
your front, the mountain, and in your back, the beach.
• At your left side, you will see the “Triangle” building where you will find Massimo Dutti for example
– I like this brand because they have very nice things for man and woman and not so expensive. At
your right side, you will find the famous big shop of Spain, El Corte Ingles composed of numerous
floors and you will find everything – clothes, foods, perfumes, furniture...
• By going down the “avinguda del Portal de l’Angel” and walking around this area, streets are full of
shops and you will find famous brands like Zara, Mango and less famous ones. If you get bored of
this area, just walk until the “Born” area and take the “argenteria” street.
• By going up, you have 2 choices. Go “rambla de catalunaya” or “passeig de gracia”. Since both
streets are full of shops, the main difference is that in “passeig de gracia”, you will find Channel,
Gucci, Luis Vuitton... and if you are not tied, you can keep going up to “gran de gracia” until “plaza
de lesseps” (it is a long walk).
• By going left, you have the “tallers” street and by going right, “ronda de Sant Pere” street. This
street is very famous because it is full of Chinese cloth shops and a lot of people come here to buy
for their own shop.
• If you want to go to the outlet area, you have to walk down the “girona” street (crossing “gran via
de les corts catalanes” street). Don’t be excited!!! It is very little but at least you will find the Mango
outlet.
12.2 – Book/Stationery
Book shops and stationery stores are everywhere in this city, it should not be a problem for you to find books
you need and papers, pen, notebook… The chapel of Mercy has been converted in a book shop called La
Central del Raval (c/ elisabets 6) with a coffee space where you can enjoy your purchase quietly. One of the big
shop to buy papers, pens… a lot of things to find everything is Konema (c/ consell de cent 296) and very close
to “plaza catalunya”.
At “gran via de les corts catalanes 616” there is Altaïr, a great shop to buy any travel guide, mapping, score…
Laie (pau claris 85) is a book shop specialized in architecture, cine and art with a coffee space to enjoy a great
reading. Looking for a comic shop, you have to go to Norma Comics (passeig sant joan 9) at 5 minutes from
“Arc de Triomf” by walking up the main street. Meanwhile visiting the city, you will automatically stumble to
more shops no matter where you are!!!
12.3 - Furniture
At “passeig de gracia” street, you can go to Vinçon shop, you will find normal and particular furniture – a little
expensive in my opinion. At the Triangle building, you will find Habitat, it is like Ikea but better – I like this
shop, majority of my furniture are from them. By going up “rambla de Catalunya”, you will find some like Zara
Home. When you are at the end of this street, go up the “diagonal” street until “plaza Francesc Macia”, you
will find much more.
12.4 - Electronic
At the Triangle building, you can go to the FNAC but if you want cheaper you can go to “plaza Universidad” - if
you are an electronic fan, this area is made for you. Around this place you will find camera, TV, cell phone,
mobile, game console, computer, laptop... From this place, you can take “ronda de sant antoni” street and you
will find some big computer shops. Still from this place, you can go to “sepulveda” street and take a walk
around, this area is very famous for little computer shops selling at good prices.
12.5 - Cosmetic
This is not only for woman but also for man so if you are looking to buy perfume, make-up, eau de toilette,
cream… you can go to El Corte Ingles and even in the Sephora located at the Triangle building. By going up the
“rambla de catalunya” street, you will find more cosmetic shops.
12.6 - Flower
If you have an argument with your girlfriend/boyfriend at 3 AM and you want to buy flowers to be forgiven,
where to go??? At “valencia 328-332” street (crossing “bruc” street), there is a big flower market open 24h and
7 days. Don’t think that it will be expensive, on the contrary the price is the same like a normal shop. I go often
there since I can find nice flowers for only 1€ for home.
Well I will say everywhere you will go, you can buy a souvenir like a post card or food like Spanish ham. But for
me there are 2 main places. “La rambla” street and around La Sagrada Familia.
By going down “la rambla”, you will find on your left and on your right, a lot of souvenirs shops. I will advise
you to walk in the middle because you will see some show. OK for the middle, the street is composed of 3 areas
(4 during weekend). You will find the animal area, little shop where you can buy fish, turtle, birds... next the
flower area, when you are in this area, make a stop and go visit the most nice market at Barcelona, “La
Boqueria” where you can only buy foods and have a lunch. Here you can buy the famous Spanish ham and the
price can be very expensive, Spanish vine...
After that, the artist area where you can ask the guy to paint you in normal way or in funny way. You can also
buy paintings and the last area (only weekend) the stalls of personal creation where people exhibit and sell
their own creation. You can find bags, jewels, masks...
All along the street, you will find some show like a group of people dancing, a guy who plays with a ball and the
famous human being statues where some are very amazing. Also you will see what I call false human statue –
by this, I want to mean people who rent a costume and paint a little his face and they name themselves human
statue artist. This is a discrimination way for the true artists who are experts on this art and who pass a lot of
time to prepare themselves to provide us a very great show.
La Sagrada Familia area is also full of souvenir shops, majority are around the famous basilica of Antoni Gaudi.
If you prefer those places, Barcelona has 7 main malls. You can go by walking but I will advise you to take the
metro or a taxi if you haven’t rent a car.
Let’s start first by the “Maremagnum”, you can go there easily by walking, just go until the end of “la rambla”
street and cross the bridge of the Barcelona port.
In the “diagonal” street, this one crosses the city by going up and down. Up, you will find “L’Illa Diagonal”, take
the metro green line L3 (direction zona universitaria) and get off at the station “maria cristina” and walk down
a little this street. Down, “Glories Commercial Center”, take the metro red line L1 (direction fondo) and stop at
the station “glories” and the last mall “Diagonal Mar”, take the metro yellow line L4 (direction la pau) and get
down at the station “el maresme forum”.
During your trip by taxi or bus from the airport to Barcelona city, you should have seen “GranVia 2 Commercial
Center” close to Ikea, just before entering in the city. To go there you have to make a change, first take the
metro red line L1 (direction Hospital de Bellvitge) or green line L3 (direction Zona Universitaria), get off at the
station “espanya” and after take one of the FGC trains (lines: L8, S4, S8, S33, R5 or R6) and get down at the
station “ildefons cerdà”.
“Arenas de Barcelona” is situated on the espanya square, a former bullring converted in a mall. To go there,
take the metro red line L1 (direction Hospital de Bellvitge) or green line L3 (direction Zona Universitaria) and
get down at the station “espanya”.
The “Heron City” in the Nou Barris neighborhood, to go there, take the metro red line L1 (direction Fondo) and
get off to the station “fabra i puig” and I will end with the bigger one “La Maquinista”, take the metro red line
L1 (direction Fondo) and get down to the station “torres i bages”.
12.9 - Market
There are at least 40 markets distributed in the city and most of them are for foods so I am just going to
describe you the most interesting ones.
“La Boqueria” (la rambla 89) is the famous food market where you can buy some Spanish specialties like
Iberian ham, cheese, turron… and the place is very crowdy.
“Sant Antoni” market (calle comte d’urgell 1), this one is very similar to La Boqueria but with a main
difference, there are cloth stalls and every Sunday, a book, postcard and coin stalls.
“Encants” market (calle dos de maig 186), an amazing market where you will find everything except food like
furniture, videos, gems, cosmetics… and a good place for antique dealer. Also during the weekend, down “la
rambla” street, there is a little antiquarian fair near the Colón statue square.
“Fira Artesana” (plaza del pi), if you are in the city during the first Friday and Saturday of the month, you can
go to this place to buy foods from local producers.
“Sant Josep” market (plaza de sant josep oriol), each weekend you can see, in this place, artists which exhibit
their painting art. Down “la rambla” street, you can find more exhibitions and artists ready to portrait or to

caricature you. Each weekend, at “passeig d’itaca” street (near the Aquarium of Barcelona), there are also
artists to present their art.
In fact, if you go down “la rambla” street from “plaza catalunya”, not only you will see the famous being
statues with their impressive makeup and costume but also the street is cut in different sections, first you will
see animal stalls, after flower stalls, next come paint stalls and to end, gift stalls but this last part only exhibits
the Friday and the weekend.
There are many more places you can go for shopping. For example around “la rambla” street, by adventuring in
the small streets, you will find more shops or in the Gracia neighborhood where you can find many little shops.
If you play a little the adventurer, I am sure you will find your happiness.
NOTE
• It exists a card called “connect club” which gives discounts in over 150 places on sightseeing, tours,
restaurants, shop, bars… The card is valid for 1 year and the basic one costs 12€ and the VIP one
costs 15€ and the shop is located at “plaza urquinaona 11, 3-2” – phone (+34)933170474.
IMPORTANT
• Streets around “la rambla” street are full of pickpockets. During day time, you won’t feel to be in
danger but during night time, try to avoid its dark and little streets.
13 - Snack
Walking some much and visiting so much shops to find your happiness, you need to make a break before to
keep going on searching for more gifts and nice things to bring back at home.
It is the good moment to try the traditional Spanish drink, the “horchata”. In the 8’s century, Arabs introduced
this drink in Spain and it was called originally “milk of tiger nut” and in Valencia, the earth is well appropriated
for its crop because it needs sandy land as well as soft temperatures.
You can find it in many places including in supermarkets but if you want a fresh one, the best is to go inside an
ice cream maker so you will have the choice between an ice cream, a horchata or an iced lemon drink.
You won’t have any problem to find an ice cream maker because there are plenty of them in the city. Following
some places I like to go to take a snack.
14 – Dinner
There are many nice restaurants where you can have dinner during night time. The dinner time in Spain is very
late, the kitchen opens at 21h when the shops close. In fact, it will depend a lot about the place you are going
but in general, tapas places you can go at anytime and restaurants from 21h.
Majority of restaurants accept only reservation at 21h and in some places, also at 23h since the kitchen is
opened until midnight so for example, if you plan to reserve a table at 22h, they will refuse and they will tell
you simply to come over.
The 21h is called first turn and the 23h is called second turn so if you can’t reserve at this time, you will have to
go and try your luck, if there are free tables, great if not, you will have to wait or to go to another one.
Barcelona is full of restaurants with different specialties like Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Mediterranean…
and from the traditional to the gastronomy one so there are for any purse.
The main areas where you can find a lot of restaurants are:
In Ciutat Vella, I will recommend you the Born area. In Eixample, this district hides a lot of places but I will
counsel you to walk either on “rambla de catalunya”, “passeig de gracia” or “muntaner” street. In Gràcia, you
will merge on local restaurants and I always find my happiness around “plaza de rius y taulet” (known also as
“plaza de la vila de gràcia”), “verdi” or “gran de gràcia” street. In La Vila Olimpica del Poblenou, the area
around the golden fish and the beach - near the hotel Arts.
During the week you don’t need to reserve, there is always a table for you at any time but Friday and Saturday,
I will say that you need to reserve for 21h or at least go at this time, if not, the fact to arrive a little later, you
may wait minimum between 30 minutes and 1h. The other days of the week, normally you won’t have this
problem. Following some places I like to go.
If you want to eat Mediterranean food and you look for a romantic place, you will have to wait that the kitchen
is open at 21h. I propose you to go to Tragaluz (1), “passeig de la concepcio” - phone (+34)934870621. It is a
little and hidden street close to the metro Diagonal. This place has 2 floors, one for snack and one for
restaurant. I suggest you to go to the restaurant where the roof is in crystal. Tenorio (2), “passeig de gracia 37”
- phone (+34)932720592 (close to Casa Batllo). Except the food, I like the design which is well harmonized with
the purple color. Noti (3), “calle roger de lluria 35” – phone (+34)933426673 (crossing “diputació” street). A
very nice and sophisticated decoration and a little expensive but the food is excellent.
If you feel more Japanese food, you have 3 choices. El Japones (1), “passeig de la concepcio” – phone
(+34)934872592. The kitchen is open at 21h and if you plan to dine at this time, better to reserve (they take
only reservation at this time so if you plan to go at 22h for example, they will not reserve it and you will have to
go there and wait for a free table).
What do you think about India food??? Mayura (1), “calle girona 57” - phone (+34)934814536 (crossing
“diputacion” street). You will have the possibility to dine at bed!!! And what I like the most except the food, it is
the river which flows all along the bar creating a special romantic atmosphere. Monje (2), “calle pau claris 92”
– phone (+34)933184252 (crossing “gran via de les corts catalanes” street). Another very nice romantic place
for dinner where you will be surrounded by many Buddha statues.
What about a popular and traditional food??? You can go to Bo (phone (+34)932185198) (1) or Amelie (phone
(+34)935133746) (2) restaurant, “plaza de la vila de gràcia” (known also “plaza rius i taulet” in Gracia district).
They cook tapas but more typical from the country and since they are situated in a charming place within a
popular neighborhood, it is perfect to merge you!!!
Fans of meat, go to the Argentina restaurant called Rustico, ”calle terol 39” - phone (+34)932848601 (close to
the “plaza de la revolució de setembre de 1868”). When I need to eat meat, I go there because they have a
meat plate – very big and not expensive, around 10€ and I can’t never finish!!!
One of the area I always avoid it is “la rambla” street because for me, restaurants are trap tourists and during
summer time, they get used to increase a little their prices. More ideas, below more places:
INFORMATION
IMPORTANT
• Bread is not free and in some places, they will bring it even if you don’t order it so if you are not
going to eat it, tell it to the waiter/waitress if not they will bill you.
15 – Nightlife
The city is reputed for its nightlife where streets are full of bars, nightclubs, bar discos, cocktail bars, lounge
bars… The city changes completely from day to night like Mr. Hide and Dr. Jekyll.
After dinner, it is the drinking time before the dancing time. Normally, Spanish people finish dining between
23h and midnight and they go to nightclubs around 2h.
Each neighborhood has its own particularity and it can be more expensive or not. The Spanish tradition is to go
from place to place until to get drunk so you go into one bar, take a drink, go out to find another bar, get in,
order a drink, and get out again to find another and so on until you can stand anymore or until you decide to go
to night club but even that, you will order more drinks!!!
If you want, you can skip this part and go directly to a nightclub but you have a lot of chances to be alone inside
or with other “guiris” (Spanish word to design a stranger). Some clubs are free and some you will have to pay
the entrance between 10€ and 15€ (1 drink included) and they close between 6h-7h. The price for a drink is
around 5€, a cocktail is between 8€ and 14€, a shot will cost you around 1€ and if you are not a drinker, you
can order a cocktail without alcohol or a soda and of course it is cheaper.
• The Born area, little streets full of bars where I can take a nice drink like a mojito and where I can
dance for free entrance. The main street is “passeig del born” (metro Jaume 1 yellow line L4).
• The Raval area, composed also of little streets, this neighborhood hide its bars but taking one of its
streets, you will discover them easily. The famous place is the “Plaza Reial”.
• The Gracia area (metro Fontana green line L3), very famous popular neighborhood where every
people go there to look for a good diversion. Very crowded during weekend and the famous square
is the “plaza del sol”.
• The Poble Nou area, an old industrial neighborhood which is now full of clubs. Normal price is
around 10€ (1 drink included).
• The Eixample Izquierda area, very famous since this neighborhood gathers a lot of gay bars and
clubs. A very funny district where I can have a lot of fun. You will have to take the “muntaner” street
to discover them.
• The Sant Gervasi area, a lot of bars and free clubs. I pass my night around “maria cubi” street
crossing “amigo” and “sagues” street.
• The Vila Olímpica del Poblenou area, a lot of nice bar/lounge places and many clubs are free
entrance, you can find them all along the beach from the “passeig maritim de la barceloneta” to
“passeig maritim del port olimpic” (close to the casino and the golden fish).
INFORMATION
• For more options, read Lounge bar and clubbing and Bar, restaurant, club... at Barcelona.
IMPORTANT
• In Ciutat Vella district (area around “la rambla” street), during night time, avoid dark and little
streets and take always streets with a lot of movements.
TIP
• To have a discount for the entrance price of a night club, try to get a flyer. Moreover, sometimes not
always, it is a free pass to let you in.
• To get the flyer, you can:
o print it out from their official website if exists
o pick it up inside a bar
o or take it from the guy who distributes it on the street.
• Check on facebook, some night events are organized and if you put your name on the invintation
list, you can get free entrance.
• Check on their official website (if exists) and put your name on the guest list, you can get free
entrance.
Epilogue
It is 6h and you are one of the last persons who just left the nightclub. Your plane/boat is leaving at 8h so you
just have 2h to go to your hotel to take a good and hot shower before to take the airport bus at “plaza
catalunya” or the portbus at “plaza de Colom”.
At the end, you have discovered Barcelona in 24h and I hope that you have enjoyed your holiday. Before to
board, you promised yourself that you will come back very soon and this time, you will take at least more days
to visit this beautiful city.
Before to close this guide and let you plan your real vacation, I just would like to add that in any places are not
allowed to smoke except in the street so if you are in a club, a restaurant, a bar… you will have to go outside to
smoke.
I know that I repeat a lot about pickpockets and avoiding some streets but I prefer to be foresighted than
something bad will happen to you during your stay.
And last thing, don’t forget to visit my blog www.world-rt.com to discover more information about Barcelona
or even about Spain.
