Deepest Openhole SmartWell® System Completed in the Middle East

OPERATOR’S CHALLENGE – A major operator in the

Middle East needed a four-zone openhole intelligent completion
in an extended-reach well that had been drilled in a carbonate
reservoir. Perceived risk factors including instability of the open
hole and higher friction while running the completion had, in
the past, limited the wider adoption of intelligent completions in
openhole conditions.

HALLIBURTON’S SOLUTION – Halliburton

WellDynamics mitigated these risks by helping to ensure the

right technology selection, proper well planning and best
practices adoption from previous jobs.
Following extensive evaluation and planning, a downhole
interval control valve was installed at 16,024 ft (4,884 m),
making this well the deepest intelligent completion run to date
in the region. These downhole valves will be used to choke back
zones with high water cut, improving oil production. This
intelligent completion allowed the operator to monitor and
optimize the inflow from sections of the reservoir, all done
remotely from surface without downhole well intervention.

ROC -D electronic pressure and temperature gauges
continuously monitored downhole parameters and transmitted
data to surface in real time while HVC surface-controlled
downhole valves were used to optimize production from the
different zones. (HVC valves have 10 discrete choke settings and
can be hydraulically operated from surface to optimize the
production from each zone during the life of the well.)

VALUE CREATED – The Swellpacker swellable elastomer
cable system provided isolation between zones and, with its
cable feed-through feature, enabled the passage of control lines
for downhole monitoring and control of devices, through the
packer, without splicing control lines. The self-healing
properties of the Swellpacker swellable elastomer cable system
helped ensure a perfect seal around the control lines and against
the formation as the packer swelled and sealed downhole.

Openhole SmartWell completion system eliminated the need
for a liner, making these wells less costly and requiring less rig
time. Moreover the SmartWell completion system extended the
operators well life by choking back segments with high water cut
while continuing to flow from other zones. Additionally, these
openhole wells have higher well productivity compared to cased
and perforated wells.

As the world’s largest adopter of intelligent well technology, this

operator typically installs SmartWell completion systems within
cased or liner sections. Halliburton’s successful integration of the
SmartWell completion system with the Swellpacker technology
enables operators to install SmartWell completion systems
within openhole sections.
