Profile
I am an experienced journalist, writer and editor, with a broad background in pu
blishing, marketing, newspaper reporting and editing, magazine and website editi
ng, copywriting, technical reports and more. I am self-motivated, work well with
in a team framework, but also enjoy working independently. I bring creativity an
d thoughtful analysis to any job I undertake. I comfortably use a number of comp
uter programs, including Microsoft Word, and am a competent photographer.
As a free-lance writer and editor, I co-edited the first three issues of the new
San Antonio Taste magazine, and wrote many of the articles. I also am co-founde
r and editor of SavorSa.com, a daily web magazine that covers the culinary scene
, food issues, news and more. I produced blogs as a newspaper reporter and I am
acquainted with HTML. I have a bachelors of science degree as well as a bachelor
s degree in journalism. I worked for almost five years as a marketing writer for
a test publishing company, Harcourt Brace.
Experience
1997-2009: Reporter III, San Antonio Express-News. (1994-1997, part time)
Food writer, restaurant critic and wine columnist for award-winning Taste sectio
n.
We brainstormed story ideas for months in advance, determining what our readers
could most use and would be most interested in. I met demands for special sectio
ns, juggled copy, assigned and worked with photographers and production artists.
I organized and directed successful taste panels for consumer products, and par
ticipated in the research for three separate redesigns of the food section. My a
rticles, including those written on subjects other than food, have appeared in n
ewspapers across the country and throughout the web. My work included daily edit
ing and proofreading of my colleagues articles. As part of the food team I blogg
ed for the online edition. I received three promotions in my years at the paper.

1989-1993: Marketing copywriter, Harcourt Brace, The Psychological Corporation (

Wrote, edited and collaborated with artists and photographers creating text, adv
ertising and graphic content for several catalogs and multiple smaller marketing
projects each year. I took these projects from the fact-gathering stages throug
h the final press checks. I wrote, edited and produced technical reports with au
thors who were experts in fields ranging from neuropsychology to speech patholog
y. I produced convention materials, videos, and many other pieces for this inter
nationally known test publisher. I was promoted to senior copywriter.
1987-1989: Communications Coordinator, Yavapai College, Prescott, AZ
Created and wrote, as communications professional for YC, a full page in the loc
al daily newspaper. (I had worked at this paper, The Courier, for two years prio
r to taking the college position.) I wrote and produced (desktop published) the
college newsletter each week. Organized and directed production of the college c
atalog, working with faculty, administrators and artists. Wrote and produced bro
chures and other publicity campaign material, videos and advertising. Worked wit
h Director of Advancement on projects for alumni, foundations and college govern
ing board.

per layout and design, photography, editing and production.

Comprehensive degree covering food science and chemistry, as well as basic-to-go
urmet cooking, sensory evaluation of food, microbiology, biology, nutrition, eco
nomics, speech, business communications, consumer behavior and consumer marketin
g. This grounding in college-level science has given me a great deal of confiden
ce when researching, writing or editing science-based information.
