NC3Rs Roadshows ◙
The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research
(NC3Rs) is holding several free roadshows aimed at helping with:
• New sources of funding
• Identifying new partners from industry and academia
• Translating research across sectors and disciplines
• Developing more predictive models and reducing animal use

These will take place:

Cardiff University – Thursday 16 June
University of Sheffield – Monday 20 June
University of Nottingham – Tuesday 28 June
University of Manchester – Wednesday 6 July
University of Edinburgh – Wednesday 13 July
Imperial College London – Wednesday 20 July
University of Southampton – Monday 1 August

The NC3Rs will be showcasing their diverse range of funding schemes and collaborative activities,
and some of the research being done in the UK which has the potential to minimise animal use in
basic and applied research.

They will also be introducing CRACK-IT® ◙, a new research engine and funding competition
designed to connect academic and industrial researchers in solving global scientific challenges
associated with animal models in the biosciences.

These meetings are free to attend, but registration is essential. For programme and registration
details please visit their website ◙

Qualitative Research Network workshop – Narrative or Thematic Analysis?
Professor Ian Shaw will lead the next Qualitative Research Network workshop and facilitate a
discussion on narrative and thematic analysis. The workshop will take place on Thursday 30
June, between 12.30 and 2.00pm in Seebohm Rowntree Building, A/T/B 042 at the University of
York. To book a place, please email Julia Forsberg ◙

Professor Shaw says:

This participatory workshop is for all interested in developing and utilising narrative analysis
alongside a thematic approach. The main focus will be on narrative analysis but with some
comparison with thematic approaches. The session will be in three parts:
• An overview of some of main approaches to narrative analysis - and examples to illustrate.
• A briefer section asking participants to suggest contrasts and comparisons with thematic
analysis.
• A closing part where I will offer something on how narrative has a contribution to
professional practice. In suggesting this I am not referring to the standard models of
narrative practice but I will introduce one or two examples of narrative research and
consider what one learns about professional practice in, say health, education and social
work from a narrative account, in ways that would not be learned from a standard form of
professional interviewing. You could describe this as a case for a methodological or
qualitative professional practice.
If you are interested in reading then I would suggest:

Shaw, I (2011) Evaluating in Practice Aldershot: Ashgate. Check the Index for narrative. (This book
is due out at the beginning of June so you will have to move quickly!)

Accredited Researcher Programme ◙
The Accredited Researcher Programme is a scheme to assess and accredit researchers working in
Clinical Trials in the non-commercial and commercial sectors. The Programme provides a method
of independent accreditation of researchers that can be used to demonstrate knowledge that has
been acquired either through experience or training. Accredited Researcher is a joint venture
organisation between PharmaSchool and NHS R&D Forum.

University of York SPRU (Social Policy Research Unit) research provides evidence
about delivering care closer to home (CCTH) - Full report, systematic review and
summary ◙

New research from SPRU provides evidence about delivering care closer to home (CCTH) for ill
children. It looks at: the range and extent of current provision; the implications of CCTH for those
who plan, deliver and use such services; and the cost effectiveness of CCTH.

Researchers in SPRU undertook a national survey of CCTH services and five case studies across
four PCTs, as well as completing a systematic review of evidence for paediatric home care and a
descriptive review of UK models of CCTH. From this research, important factors were found for
the development of CCTH services, including:
• effective working relationships between commissioners and providers
• a robust evidence base of costs, caseload and contacts to facilitate service development
• sufficient and holistic support for families needs to be an integral aspect of CCTH services,
especially where parents take on the responsibility for nursing tasks
• support structures should be in place for isolated working practices.
