Conference Overview
Increasingly, mental health teams are seeing children and families who present with simple and complex PTSD, symptoms of dissociation
and emerging personality disorders, along with disorders resistant to common modalities of therapy such as unmodified CBT and narrative
approaches.
The aim of this conference is to provide a comprehensive overview of the most recent research on different ways traumata are processed by
the brain and how this neurological information can inform each mental health professional on the options for treatment. This has come
increasingly to the fore since the NICE guidelines were published on PTSD and more treatment options have become available.
The morning sessions will focus on the theoretical approaches to treatment, including the dangers of rushing to process traumatic memories
before affective regulation has been achieved. This will be complemented by an afternoon, consisting of a series of practical workshops
outlining the following areas:
• Differences between types 1 and 2 of traumatic stress
• Case examples, illustrating use of the latest neurobiologically based treatments. Cases will include children, adolescents and adults
with symptoms of traumatic stress disorders.
• Impact of trauma in pregnancy and the implications for attachment within the parent-child relationship.
About the Speakers
An expert panel of authoritative presenters will lead this balanced programme:
Dr Andrew Harkin: Having trained in adult psychiatry, Andrew moved to Boulder Colorado to study sensorimotor psychotherapy, an approach
developed by Pat Ogden in 2000. Living and practising in The West of Ireland, he travels widely throughout Europe
teaching sensorimotor psychotherapy.
Dr Sheena Pollet A medical psychotherapist and psychoanalyst, Sheena has adapted a brief psychoanalytic parent-infant psychotherapy
model to work with complex parent-infant trauma presenting as severe mental illness in the parent.

sensorimotor psychotherapy. His main interest is developing neurobiologically informed treatments for complex
