[Review] Ubuntu 10.

10 Maverick Meerkat on Acer Aspire 4530

Ubuntu Development Team has just released the latest stable version, Ubuntu 10.10, codenamed Maverick Meerkat. I have downloaded it yesterday few days ago, and now, Im going to I have it installed on my box, Acer Aspire 4530 From the ubuntu homepage, it said this release comes with a lot of changes. New installers interface, new amazing fonts, and others. Yeah, I think in every release, it will be better than before. FYI, my box is Acer 4530 with this specification : Processor : AMD Turion X2 RM-70 RAM : 2GB (1.7GB, coz eaten by VGA) VGA : NVidia Geforce 9100M G 512MB Wireless : Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Just like my review before, Ill divide it into 4 categories, and final conclusion. Nah, lets begin the review 1. Boot Splash & Boot Time Boot splash in Ubuntu 10.10 still the same as Ubuntu 10.04. With widower color purple as its main color. Yah, personally, I like this color . About the boot time, fast. But I dont think so, if I install a lot of programs in it, hahahaha lol. Here some Screenshots. I took them from the review before, hehehe (since it still the same as Ubuntu 10.04)

Ubuntu 10.10 Boot Splash 2. Desktop Interface Still using Ambiance as the default theme. I dont like this theme so much. Too dark, and its bottom corners isnt rounded. ekkwkkwk. Besides, the position of the Window

Button still placed on the top-left of the window. Makes me sick, hahahaha. Here is the default view (before) :

Little customizing Yeah, not too much new changes in the Desktop Interface that comes within this release. Oh, you will figured out that Maverick uses new font family, named Ubuntufont-family or Ubuntu. 3. Software Built in softwares that included in this release, I think still the same as previous release. Firefox, Evolution, Empathy, Pitivi. Hhh.. Those are softwares that I never use in Ubuntu. (except Firefox). I dont know why the developer not including GIMP but adding such a program like Pitivi Video Editor. Oh my

Oh ya, theres a change in Sound Applet. Now, it works together with Rhytmbox. See the screenshot below :

Rhytmbox Integration with Sound Applet The other new software is Shotwell Photo Manager. This is the replacement for FSpot Photo Manager. Hmm.. I never used both of them before, but I just tried the Shotwell, and I think its a good software. Here is the Screenshot.

Ubuntu Software Center (USC) still available, and become the default program for any .deb file. Yeah, if you double-click .deb file, it will be opened using USC. Replacing gdebi installer which is the default program in the previous releases.

Ubuntu Software Center I just noticed, this program is easier to use for them who new in Linux. Yeah, it simplifies the procedure of installing new software that available from repository. 4. Hardware All of hardware work perfectly by default in this release, except the VGA. We need to enable NVidia proprietary driver that available via Ubuntu Repository. It well tested by Ubuntu Developer, so we dont need to worry. You can enable it from System > Administration > Additional Drivers. For me, I decided to install the driver from Official NVidia Homepage, not from the Ubuntu Repository.

Ubuntu 10.10 - Additional Drivers FYI, my CDMA Modem, Haier CE100 detected as CD-ROM by default. We need to eject it to make it recognized as modem. Dont worry, hahahaha

5. Conclusion So far, so good. I think you should try this one, and feel the differents by yourself . You could install others softwares from the repository. Hardware detection, I think improved a lot that really helpful.

asda | 4 November , 2010 at 9:29 PM Mau minta tolong nih, Saya pake modem HAIER CE100 tapi gak kedetect sama sekali di maverick (gak kedetect sebagai CDROM dan MODEM jadi walupun saya colok modemnya gak ada tanda2 sama sekali modem di maverick saya.. Modem saya kedetect cmn waktu pertama kali habis install mave rick (modem dalam keadaan tercolok dari pertama boot sebelum install ketika saya cabut modemnya tidak terbaca sama sekali kalo di colok lagi, saya harus eject lewat ubuntu lucid atau windows supaya bisa terbaca di maverick lagi Ada yang bisa bantu solusi gak supaya modem saya bisa langsung terbaca di maverick? Makasih sebelumnya

bangjohan | 27 November , 2010 at 7:34 PM wah bisa aja qm budsuka merendah gitu! eh ane mau cerita pngalaman ane waktu make ubuntu nech ane udah brhasil nginstal ubuntu pertama ane, maverick meerkat, s ebenarnya bkn yg pertama sih. dlu prnah instal yg lucyd tapi krn lum ada passion jd ane jarang pake. nah sekarang mau bljar2 yg lebih jauh lg ttg linux khususx ubuntu jadinya ane install tu maverick. gini nech ceritanya,,kmrn waktu abis nginstal ubuntu 10.10 kok waktu dipake bentar gitu lappie ane jadi hang yagak tau kenapa. itu mmbuat ane smpat kmbali putus asa lagi waktu mau nyoba pake ubuntu. tapi hari jumat kmrn, ane iseng2 buka tu OS. eh setelah ane pake gak hang. trus ane update tu systemx. skrg anepake aman2 aja bud! tapi sayangx kok lappie ane jadi panas ya ente juga ngalami gak bud?? yahh ini cm sekedar share aja sih.cukup bangga juga make OS yang legal gitu!hehe oyaa klo ada waktu boleh tuh mampir ke blog aneditunggu knjungannya. salam dari BangJohan.

Iam just installed Ubuntu replacing the original linpus linux when i bought it, but the problem now is that i cant use wireless. not only that, i also cant use my easy -launch buttons.. Can someone let me know the solutions? i think it suppose to be drivers available right? but i checked a lot of websites only provides windows based driver... thx for sharing ^^

Before you do anything I suggest you to read this guides, I hope they ll help you: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper Anyway if your network device is a Broadcom you could try using "ndiswrapper" to try and use wndows xp drivers on ubuntu (for wifi device). try downloading the drivers for windows xp (from acer website,I think you ll have to search a little bit cause they offer a lot for vista, anyway they should be available) So install ndiswrapper, then extract the drivers and locate the .INF file -> then from the terminal go to the file (for example if it s in the Desktop/drivers folder you ll type cd /home/yourname/Desktop/drivers) -> then type sudo ndiswrapper -i INF -> at this point the drivers should be installed. -> for wifi, you need to set it to let GNOME Network Manager use the drivers, so open the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist (sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) and add a line on the bottom like this: blacklist bcm43xx then open the file /etc/modules (sudo gedit /etc/modules) and add a line at the bottom like this: ndiswrapper Hope for the best!:) kris said on 2008-08-07: #3 Yea mine is 8.04.1 I think my laptop not using Broadcom, detail at below: 0b:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc.
