Pepperdine Faculty and Staff Present at Sakai Conference in Los Angeles. This June, the Technology and Learning group will take more than 50 faculty and staff members to the North American Sakai Conference in downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine attendees will participate or present in a total of 11 presentations. Faculty and staff attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about effective teaching practices with Courses (Pepperdine's Sakai instance) and keep abreast of technological innovations and new releases planned for the upcoming academic year. All Pepperdine attendees will meet for a Birds of a Feather session to discuss best practices and chart the future of Courses. The Technology and Learning group will complete its three-part blending learning series this June with a workshop that focuses on protecting and ensuring academic integrity. Attendees will also review copyright issues and laws. This workshop will be offered at the Malibu campus on Friday, June 24 and on Tuesday, June 28 at the West Los Angeles campus. Information Technology to Host iPad Workshops for Faculty. Leaders from Pepperdine's iPad Research Study will talk through a ve-step process to help faculty and instructors think about the implementation of iPads in their courses. During the workshop, attendees will also explore how various teaching styles including lecture, group work, and individual learning can change when an iPad app is introduced to a particular lesson or activity. Overarching ideas and thoughts gathered from students and faculty who participated in the iPad Research Study over the past 14 months will also be shared during the workshop. This workshop is open to any faculty or staff member who is curious about the use of iPads in the classroom or interested in using iPads to enhance learning in their course. Alex Goulak - Alex Goulak serves as senior systems and data administrator in IT's Systems and Networking group. Goulak brings with him more than 18 years of information technology experience to the team. Prior to coming to Pepperdine, Goulak held leadership roles at Puroow, Inc. and Netkit Solutions LLC. Canon Hamlin- Canon Hamlin serves as senior client technologies analyst in Pepperdine's Malibu eld support group. He maintains computers, systems, and data for all of the Seaver Campus staff. In addition, he serves on the education technology support team, helping staff with Sakai. Hamlin is also a proud Pepperdine alumni. Jordan Lott - Jordan Lott serves as senior client technologies analysts for IT's Audio Visual Technologies group, which assists with all audio/visual needs of the University. Lott brings with him more than four years of audio/visual and information technology experience to the team. Prior to Pepperdine, Lott served as the information services acquisitions administrative assistant at MGM Studios. Tiffany Yu - Tiffany Yu serves as communications specialist for IT. Yu brings more than three years of public relations and communications experience to the team. Prior to Pepperdine, she was the public relations coordinator for the California Healthcare Institute where she assisted in all public relations campaigns in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. IT is Exploring the Possibilities of a Universal Survey Tool for the University. In May, departmental liaisons were asked to ll out a survey to help Information Technology determine the potential for purchasing a universal survey tool for the University community. A universal survey tool could help the University save money, while at the same time providing additional functionality and allowing for consistency in branding. The ndings from the survey will be presented at the next University's budget managers' meeting. Thank you to those who participated in the survey. NetworkID Password Change Process Made Easier. All Pepperdine faculty, staff, and students receive a NetworkID, which is used to access online resources such as WaveNet, University libraries, or Courses. The NetworkID website is used to reset a password, update a NetworkID prole, or redirect Pepperdine email. On May 20, Information Technology's Enterprise Information Systems' team member Sean Fife implemented updates to the NetworkID website to increase usability and enhance the user experience. Visit the updated page at https://networkid.pepperdine.edu. Tracking of Grant and Funding Proposals Made Easier Through PeopleSoft. IT's Enterprise Information Systems' staff member Ronit Weiss partnered with Gail Chester from the Ofce of Research and Sponsored Programs to implement a new PeopleSoft application that tracks faculty grants proposals and funding. Prior to this, proposals were tracked using spreadsheets and Access databases. This new PeopleSoft application improves data quality and efciently tracks the progress of proposals. IT's Enterprise Information Systems' team member Brian Fujitani partnered with Susannah Stratford from Payroll to reduce the time to transfer data from Kronos, the University's timekeeping system, to PeopleSoft. With more than 2,500 employees at Pepperdine, the transfer was usually an overnight process that took about four hours to complete. By optimizing the underlining code, the process now only takes 30 minutes. This improvement has allowed Payroll to streamline the payroll process. IT Staff Kim Cary and Gerard Flynn Speak at JASIG 2011 Conference. Kim Cary, chief information security ofcer, and Gerard Flynn, director of Technology and Learning, presented Keys to Successful Switching to Open Source: Pepperdine's Sakai Implementation at the Java in Administration Special Interest Group (JASIG) 2011 conference on May 24. Both spoke about the impetus for pilot testing an open source learning management system, the methods taken in evaluating the system, the ndings from the study, and the roadmap followed in implementing Sakai universitywide. Chester, vice provost for academic administration and chief information ofcer will speak about "Why We Switched to Sakai" at the 2011 Sakai Conference. After a quiet and successful transition to Sakai, Chester will share the success his team found in leading a transparent and open process, developing faculty advocates, and using data to support decision-making leading up to Pepperdine's adoption of Sakai. Anytime Support Help Desk Statistics for May. During May 2011, there were 1150 requests for support managed through the Anytime Support Desk. Of these requests, 73 percent were resolved within two days and 96 percent were resolved in fewer than ve days. The average wait time for individuals calling the Anytime Support Desk was 176 seconds. Seventy-seven percent of requests were resolved by the Anytime Support Desk on the rst call. Online Requests. In May 2011, there were 204 additional requests for support managed through online web request forms. The top two types of online requests were: departmental telephone service (47) and network resources request (36). Anytime Support Desk User Survey Results for May. Through an automated feedback process, all Anytime Support Desk callers have the opportunity to complete a web-based satisfaction survey. In May 2011, 113 (11%) of 1029 survey requests sent to customers were submitted. The fourquestion survey uses a 1 to 5 sliding scale with 4.00-5.00 equal to Excellent.
