INTRODUCTION

This guide briefly describes how to begin using the Nokia PC Suite 5.8 and applications included with the installation package. For troubleshooting information, please refer to the Troubleshooting file of the Nokia PC Suite 5.8.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

To use the Nokia PC Suite 5.8 you need:

A PC equipped with Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition operating system At least 110 Mb of free disk space It is also assumed that you have installed the Nokia PC Suite 5.8 Please note that it is recommended to install the Nokia Connectivity Adapter Cable DKU-5 or Connectivity Cable DKU-2* drivers before installing Nokia PC Suite.

IrDA port supporting FIR protocol or USB port (requires Nokia Connectivity Adapter Cable DKU-5 or Connectivity Cable DKU-2* and device drivers)
*Nokia Connectivity Cable DKU-2 is supported by Nokia 6230, Nokia 7600 and Nokia 6650 phones.

The Nokia PC Suite 5.8 supports the following PIMs: Microsoft Outlook 98, 2000, and 2002 and 2003 Microsoft Outlook Express (Windows Address Book) Lotus Notes 5.x and 6.x Lotus Organiser 5.x and 6.x

NOKIA CONNECTION MANAGER

Nokia Connection Manager allows you to choose the connection type used when connecting your PC and your phone.

Picture 1., Nokia Connection Manager window When a connection type is selected (highlighted in green) it shows the phone that is connected to your PC. If you have multiple connection types selected, you can select the correct phone by selecting it from the list and clicking Apply. The currently selected phone has a small phone icon on the left side.

NOKIA PC SYNC

Synchronize calendar and contact data with Microsoft Outlook (98, 2000, 2002 and 2003), Microsoft Outlook Express (Windows Address Book), Lotus Notes (5.x and 6.x) and Lotus Organizer (5.x and 6.x) using Nokia PC Sync. When PC Sync is ready for synchronization you will see this icon bottom right-hand corner of the screen. If PC Sync is not ready, the following icon will appear: Before the first synchronization, you will have to configure the synchronization settings. You can begin synchronization from the user interface of PC Sync by clicking the Synchronize Now button or by right-clicking the mouse on the PC Sync icon on the taskbar in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and selecting Synchronize from the menu. To change the synchronization properties, click the Properties button. in the taskbar in the

NOKIA PHONE BROWSER

With Nokia Phone Browser, you can manage the contents of some of your phone's folders through Windows Explorer, as well as open other PC Suite applications from there. The Phone Browser consists of local folders (for example My Photos, My Graphics, and My Tones) and phone folders for each phone that has been connected to the PC. Phone subfolders show the applicable folders whenever the phone is connected to the PC.

NOKIA PHONE EDITOR

Nokia Phone Editor allows you to manage various phone functions easily from a PC. Phonebook application allows you to manage contact information in your phone and PC memories. You can add and edit contacts, copy and move contacts from one memory to another, and send business cards as text messages to other GSM subscribers.

Picture 3., Nokia Phone Editor window Messages application enables you to read, write and send text messages directly from your PC. You can organise messages into folders on the PC memory. The Messages application enables you to manage text messages in the same way that you manage e-mail. You can send and receive messages, reply to a message, forward a message and organise messages into folders. In the message main view, messages are organised into folders: Inbox folder Outbox folder Own Messages folder Sent Messages folder Drafts folder PC folder Deleted Messages

Please note: You cannot make data calls with your phone while Nokia Phone Editor is active. Also, you cannot use Nokia Phone Editor while you are making a data call.

NOKIA SETTINGS MANAGER

The Nokia Settings Manager provides an easy way to edit access point settings, bookmarks and radio settings for your phone using your PC. Select Services or Radio and navigate through different settings pages. Services With the Services application, you can manage the browser settings of your phone on a PC. Add and manage bookmarks Edit and activate service sets Transfer bookmarks and service sets between a file on your PC and a compatible phone Send bookmarks and service sets from your phone to another supported Nokia phone

Picture 4., Settings Manager Services window The Service settings available in Nokia Settings Manager depend on the phone you are using. Different phones may allow different bearer options (for example GSM and/or GPRS). To open the Service Settings dialog, click on the Service sets tab, select the set of service settings you want to edit and click Edit button. You can activate a set of browser settings in your phone with the services application. The currently set is activated is marked with a red tick.

Radio With the Radio application, you can find new radio channels for a compatible Nokia phone when the phone is connected to the PC. You can view the channels that are currently saved to the phone and search and save new channels. You can also rename radio channels saved to your phone. With the radio application you can: View the radio channels that are saved to you phone Find the new radio channels and save them to your phone Edit radio channels Rename channels in the phone Delete channels from your phone View phone radio channels on the PC

NOKIA APPLICATION INSTALLER

With the Nokia Application Installer you can download java applications from your PC to your phone. Before you begin the installation, the .JAD and .JAR files of the application to be installed must be saved on your PC. When installing the application via Nokia Application Installer, you only need to download the .JAD file, which then finds the .JAR file automatically if the two have been saved in the same folder.

To install an application in the phone

1. Connect your phone to the PC. 2. Open Nokia Application Installer. 3. Click Install... on the tool bar or select it from the File menu. - If more than one phone is connected to the PC, a dialog will open asking you to select the phone where you want to install the application. 4. An installation dialog box opens. Browse to the folder where you have saved the .JAD and .JAR files. 5. Select the .JAD file of the application you want to install and click Install. 6. An information box will appear when the installation is complete.

NOKIA IMAGE CONVERTER

With Nokia Image Converter you can: - Optimize the image for your phone - Update the image into your phone

Save the image on your PC (.bmp, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .otb, .wbmp) Open the image from your PC (.bmp, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, .otb, .png, .wbmp) Edit picture with filters and effects

Note: The maximum size of an image that can be opened in Nokia PC Suites image converter is 1500x1500 pixels. Supported image sizes: Wallpaper MMS picture Portrait image Free size image

NOKIA SOUND CONVERTER

With Nokia Sound Converter you can: - Optimize and convert a polyphonic ringing tone for your phone (OTA and MIDI files) - Play the tone Open ringing tones from the PC in: -

.mid, .rmi, .ott, .rtpl, .nrt format Save the tone on your PC in MIDI format

Update the tone into your phone

NOKIA MULTIMEDIA PLAYER

With Nokia Multimedia Player, you can view MMS message files, audio and video files, as well as images in the most common image formats. You can play files that are on your PC or straight from the phone when your phone is connected to the PC. You can also create playlists of your favorite multimedia files with the player.

You can change the playing properties of the player and set, for example, Nokia Multimedia Player as the default player for the file types you want. You can also save video and audio files in a format that allows using them in a compatible mobile phone or attaching them to an MMS message. There are several file formats that you can view with Nokia Multimedia Player. For exact information of the supported formats, see View --> Options -->Formats tab. With Nokia Multimedia Player you can: Play media files/still files/MMS messages Pause playing Stop playing Skip to another file in the playlist Open the multimedia files from the file browser Change the current position of the media clip with the Seek bar Show/Hide playlist View the player in full screen Control Volume Create/edit playlists

Converting files into another format: The file formats that can be converted in Nokia Multimedia Player are: Video files: avi, mpeg, QuickTime (QuickTime player 5.0.0.1 or later must be installed on the PC) Audio files: wav, mp3

The files can be converted either with MMS or Custom settings. Note that there are certain limitations for the size of the converted files. The maximum size for an MMS option file is 95KB. If the file does not fit the size limit, the end of the file is not converted. File saved with Custom option can be longer, but they cannot be used for MMS messages.

NOKIA AUDIO MANAGER

With the Nokia Audio Manager, you can create and organize digital music files on a compatible PC and transfer them to a compatible mobile device. Basic functions Play audio CDs Save CD music tracks to AAC format Play AAC and MP3 music tracks Create, edit and play M3U playlists Organize music tracks and playlists in the Nokia Audio Manager Music Studio Transfer AAC and MP3 tracks from the Music Studio to a compatible Nokia mobile device Transfer playlists from Music Studio to a compatible mobile device Small Audio Player. This also supports the use of Skins (skins are graphic coverings that change the visual appearance of the interface)

With the Nokia Audio Managers Music Studio you can organize and copy audio tracks onto your mobile device. Music can be placed into the Music Studio from any Windows folder. The CD Player allows you to save CD audio files in AAC digital format, which may then be added to the Music Studio and transferred to a compatible Nokia mobile device.
