2D MAINTENANCE BN JUNE 2011 Newsletter

FROM THE CO
Greetings Families /Marines / Sailors: Time appears to pass swiftly during this deployment in Afghanistan, and I hear exceptional feedback regarding our personnel in North Carolina. Deployed Marines and Sailors recently completed the second of the six month deployment, and detailed planning underway to redeploy Marines and Sailors later this Fall All look forward to seeing the banners and posters near the Camp Lejeune Main Gate. Deployed personnel consistently exceed performance expectations, and we received positive comments following a memorable visit from General Amos, Commandant of Marine Corps, and SgtMaj Kent, Sergeant Major of Marine Corps last month. General Amos and Sergeant Major Kent provided inspiring speeches to deployed personnel, and all will miss Sergeant Major Kents resonating passion and inspiring love of Corps and Country. Congratulations are warranted for our Marines and Sailors at 2d Maintenance Battalion in North Carolina. If you have not heard, our hard-working and intelligent Marines and Sailors received a Mission Capable assessment during a Headquarters Marine Corps directed Commanding General Readiness Inspection. Superior Job and Distinguished Performance considering a large percentage of 2d Maintenance Battalion is deployed supporting training and real world exercises -- I remain overwhelmingly proud of the professionalism, teamwork, and unselfish eagerness exhibited by our Marines and Sailors whether in CONUS or Afghanistan. Families, I know Summer is right around the corner, and temperatures are constantly increasing. The school term ends shortly, and like last year, we will plan for family outings at Jungle Rapids - You can expect to receive additional information from Mr. Gary Scalzo, 2d Maintenance Battalion Family Readiness Officer. I cannot say it enough -- Thanks for extending your love and support to your deployed Marines and Sailors. Please never forget the bedrock of the United States of America has and will always be the selfless and courageous men and women who proudly serve in our military. Please have an enjoyable and prosperous month, and we will see you soon. Enthusiastically submitted, Kevin R. Scott Lieutenant Colonel Commanding Officer United States Marine Corps

I hope your spring is going well. Although the first day of summer is not until June 21st, most of us will begin our summer when school lets out. I hope that you have a lot of fun plans for the summer. I also encourage you to participate in the events we have planned. On June 6th, we will host a Jane Wayne Day. This will be a great experience for everyone involved. On June 20th, we will be having a family get together at Jump in Jax from 1800-2000. We will be providing pizza for dinner so please plan to just bring yourselves and have a great time. Remember to bring socks! One June 29th, we will be having a family event at Linwood Park Zoo. It is scheduled for the morning when it is cooler and the animals are more willing to make an appearance. It is recommended that you bring your lunch. I will be providing more details on this event at a later date. The companies are also hosting numerous family events such as ELMACO Beach Run (June 3), MTM Family Day (June 4), GSM Family Day (June 17) and the SNCO and Officer Block Party (June 18). Please contact your company representative for more information on the company events. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events. Please plan to join us and use these events as a means to make new friends and find out what is going on in the battalion. As always, if I can be of assistance, please call me at (910)450-2682. GS Motor T CO
Friends and Family of General Support Motor Transport Company (Fwd), The second month of our deployment in Afghanistan is almost complete only about four more to go. All the Marines and Sailors in GSMT Company have been doing a tremendous job in supporting the many different Forward Operating Bases throughout the Helmond Province. At this point in the deployment all the Marines and sailors are getting into the daily battle rhythm. The one thing we do not have to worry about here is boredom. We all stay very busy here with, planning missions, working on the trucks, and loading supplies for the next run. The amenities here at Camp Leatherneck are also very good. There are plenty of activities to do when Marines and Sailors are not on convoy missions. Our main focus this month has been on safety. At this point in the deployment it is imperative that the Marines and sailors remain focused on their jobs to prevent injuries. Please check out our Battalions Facebook page for pictures and updates. Semper Fidelis, Capt Minella M.C.

Surgical Company Co Greetings families, friends and loved ones. With the hot weather firmly upon us, the Warriors of Alpha Surgical continue their trusted duty of caring for Coalition Forces and all those in need. This month we had the chance to celebrate and send warm wishes to all Moms both here at home. In addition Happy 103rd Birthday Navy Nurse Corps a continued proud tradition of service and sacrifice. The time seems to be just flying by as only a short while ago we departed Camp Lejeune and soon enough returning back. Please continue to send packages and words of encouragement to your Sailor or Marine and keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

H&S CO

Friends and Family of H&S Company Marines and Sailors, Another greatly successful month has passed! May has been a whirlwind of actions and operations that have kept us very, very busy. Without further ado, please read below news straight from your Marines and Sailors! S-1 The administrators in S-1 would like to thank the families for their continuing support and understanding regarding the long hours the S-1 Marines have worked to accomplish mission. The S-1 Marines have been working hard and continue to do so with a positive attitude without complaint! Their determination to strive for perfection is amazing. Everyone is dedicated to taking care of the Marines and Sailors of Maintenance Battalion administratively and legally. In addition, S-1 Marines are receiving additional PME such as the Cpl's Course and providing administrative instruction to the Afghan National Army. S-2 The S-2 spent the month of May conducting embedded route reconnaissance missions by all its members with GSMT Company while still conducting 24-hour operations. These embed missions have sent S-2 Marines across the battle space to survey firsthand the operating environment for the Marines on the ground. May brought the S-2 numerous new missions to plan for, as well as unique additional requirements to support Maintenance Battalions new Embedded Partnering Team. S -2 Marines researched and provided products such as bilingual military maps in English and Dari for use by the Kandaks leadership. S-3 Hello to all the families from the S-3 crew. We are doing well out here and working hard. Thank you for the care packages and many letters from all the families, your support is greatly appreciated. The Unit Movement Control Center (UMCC) continuously drives the Battalions mission of moving parts and gear to every unit within our Area of Operations. The Marines in the COC (Combat Operations Center) continue to excel in their performance by ensuring the Battalions command and control is executed in a timely and accurate manner to support the battalions primary mission: logistics support via convoys. Though we work many hours and continue to enhance our knowledge on our command and control programs, the Marines in the S-3 keep a positive attitude and look forward to coming home to see our family members. Thank you again for your support. S-4 The S-4 section would like to thank all the families that are enduring the time away from their service members. The love, dedication, and loyalty from you greatly assisted with the mission tasked to the Battalion. We understand deployments can weigh heavily on our family members. So we strive to support our brothers and sisters in arms in all aspects of this operation. Their success is our success and our success is ultimately your success. Please continue to show your support whether it be by email, letter, or care package and we will complete our mission here for a safe return home. BAS Hello from your Corpsmen out in the heat of Afghanistan, Our group consists of all corpsmen from the ranks of E-3 and up. We care for our Marines; we go out on convoys with them as well as take care of them here. We do have power at the base. We have a portable hot water heater in our Medical Operations tent, a coffee pot, plus we have air conditioning although some days it does not feel like it. There are long days out in the sun and we want to be prepared to take care of ourselves and our Marines and Sailors as the heat strikes. We are training constantly on different ailments that affect our Marines. We appreciate your support and prayers for our group as we take care of the Marines, Sailors, Airmen, Soldiers and even civilians out here. We want to make sure they all come home as healthy as possible. Thank you for supporting us, for keeping in touch with us by mail, e-mail, and Facebook. We look forward to returning home soon. Supply Marines of Battalion supply are working hard to fulfill the needs of our units across the battlefield. We are supporting administrative and maintenance requirements of those who deliver critical equipment and resources to our brothers and sisters who take the fight to our enemies. They dont have a glamorous job, but our Marines do it well! We appreciate the support of our family and friends in every way. It keeps us motivated and pushes us through each and every day. The time goes by slow but it helps to know that we are out here working hard in order to keep our country safe. We appreciate all the care packages and letters. We hope you have a great Fathers day and a summer filled with loads of fun. We cant wait to return home and be with our family and loved ones just in time for the holidays. S-6 The S-6 section has successfully moved Surgical Company CRCC and Occupational Therapy to their new facility. Were anticipating another successful move next month when we move Supply Company MedLog into their new facility. The wire section has been working hard commercializing the MSB headquarters building and installing voice over internet protocol phones and transitioning everyone away from the plain old telephone. The radio section is working hard with upgrading the firmware on the radio equipment. The data section migrated all the printers to the new print server that is hosted by 8 th Communication Battalion. The whole base is anticipating the long awaited upgraded Wi-Fi connection aboard Camp Leatherneck. Were looking forward to having four more successful months. Company First Sergeant: Family and friends, your Marines and Sailors continue to thrive in this austere environment, doing more with less, to provide unequalled support to our fellow service members throughout Helmand province. You can be proud of your Marines and Sailors who continue to raise the bar of excellence in all that they do. Please continue support from the home front as well. Mail call is a highlight of each day! Thank you for keeping our Marines and Sailors in your thoughts and prayers! Again, thank you for the letters, emails, and care packages! Staying connected with family and friends helps the time apart go faster. and well begin our journey home. Just a few more months left

Semper Fidelis Capt Kieran J. Kobell

MAINTENANCE COMPANY CO
I would like to say greetings to all of Maintenance Companys families and friends. We are going into our third month of the deployment. The Marines are motivated and are still pressing forward with accomplishing their mission. I must say Im truly blessed to have such a fine group of Marines from the Platoon Commanders to the most junior Marine; we have developed into a very dynamic team. We thought it was hot last month, well this past month we have been averaging right around in the 100s. The Marines are adjusting to the rising temperatures with frequent breaks, better diets, and more fluids. This past month has been very special. Maintenance Company was privilege enough to host and show case what your Marines do to some VIPs. Your Marines were able to meet, greet, and take photos with the Commandant of the Marine Corps General Amos. This is truly a once in a Marine Corps career opportunity that Marines will have the highest ranking Marine in our Corps visit them. Other Marines had the opportunity to meet and have lunch with LtGen Panter. Every time I see our Marines get mail I notice it puts a smile on their faces as well as rejuvenate their spirits. I believe just knowing that there are so many family members who care and support what they do makes a big difference in their day to day lives out here in Afghanistan . So for that I would like to thank you. Please keep supporting our Marines with mail. We could not do what we do out here without the love and support from our families and friends. I look forward to personally thanking you all for being there for your Marine. Semper Fidelis

MAINTENANCE COMPANY 1STSGT

Friends and families of Maintenance Company, Your Marines have done an outstanding job thus far. They have made an impact in supporting the War Fighter with their own unique talents. The Marines welfare and morale are high, however, with the mail and care packages from you it truly makes a difference so please keep sending them. With the Companys fast maintenance tempo and busy schedule, the Marines were able to meet and take pictures with General Amos and our 16th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, SgtMajor Kent. The Marines were very excited for the opportunity to just meet them both. We promoted the following Marines on 1 May for their hard work and dedication to the Marine Corps: Sgt Adam M. Reed, Cpl Brandon M. Christiansen, Cpl Timothy J. Fenlon, Cpl Leon F. Haynie Jr., Cpl Cody A. Lance, Cpl Jose L. Lauriano, Cpl Brandon A. Miller, LCpl Kinsey E. Renfrow and we meritoriously promoted Cpl Kevin P. Mcadams. We would also like to welcome the newest addition to the Marine family, Cpl Micheal J. Donato and wife Andrea welcomed a Son, Dylan born 9 April 2011. Again, thank you to the families and love ones for all the support and sacrifices you make. Your Marines are successful and continue to accomplish the mission because of your love and support. Please continue to support your Marines and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Greetings family and friends of MAGTF Support Battalion, Supply Company (FWD). The Marines and Sailors here at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, want you all to have a safe and eventful Memorial Day weekend as you all prepare for the 100 plus days of summer. Our summer here started early with the temperatures constantly reaching triple digits. We look forward to reflecting with you on the true meaning of this Memorial Day as we continue to support the fight here in Afghanistan and around the world. Memorial Day is a time to honor our brothers and sisters that have served and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. Supply Company CO
Family and friends of Supply Company (FWD) it has been a busy couple months since last we saw you in Camp Lejeune. I personally wanted to tell you that your loved ones are performing magnificently out here and under some challenging conditions. The temperatures routinely reach around 104 degrees during the day and dust storms are a normal weekly occurrence. Our workload as a company is at two times greater than what we experience in Camp Lejeune. Despite this, your service member is putting forth a herculean effort in order to support the war on terrorism in Afghanistan. Know that I am extremely proud and lucky to serve with everyone in this company. They are a motivating group and display a relentless work ethic. I am not surprised in the least at how well they are doing in accomplishing our mission. Last week, we had a 3-Star Admiral from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) come to visit the company. He got to walk around the work area, visit with the Marines/Sailors and see what your service member does out here. After he completed his tour he said that of all the supply organizations hes seen deployed that ours was the most squared away. Thats saying a lot as he has been all over the world in his time. I relate this story to you because it is a testament to the professionalism and tenacious pursuit of excellence that your loved ones display on a daily basis. Finally, I want to thank you for your continued support of your service member and our company. I want you to know that I appreciate the sacrifices you make so that the members of this company can do what they do on deployment. I look forward to the rest of the summer with these special Marines and Sailors. The time is going quick out here and before you know it, we will be home. Look forward to writing to you again next month. Semper Fidelis Sean M. Murray Major, USMC
