Throughout time, we have always heard of the South and the way that slaves were used and treated. However, as much as we know the North was against slavery, they too used slaves for domestic areas. This is basically how the North and South were socially the same. However, they were definitely different in the social area. The North did not use

the slaves to make the money. The Northern settlers worked themselves in the different industries. Slaves were used to help out in the home, for those that could afford it. Common northern people could live ok with working in the industries and taking care of themselves in the home. In the south, slaves were used to make the money by farming the land. Large plantation owners made a lot of money and were the upper class and well respected. The smaller land owners did not make a lot of money, did not own a lot of slaves and struggled much more than the commoners up north. They were seen as an inferior people. Northern common people were more common than the rich northerners and were not as looked down upon by those that were rich. In the south slaves were often beaten and killed. African families where separated, and African women were raped. There were many horrible things that happened in the south during this time. While some African women may have been raped up north, it was not as visible as the treatment they received in the south.
