The specifications for the rated input current and the power data in hp and kW are approximate values only; these have been calculated for operation with induction motors and for a typical power factor cos phi and motor efficiency. The calculation is based on the rated output current. The kW and hp values are in a power range that is obtained by selecting the following values: A motor power factor between 0.85 and 0.88 as well as a motor efficiency of 96%. The rated input current additionally depends on the line power factor; a value between 0.94 and 0.96 is assumed as a typical value. The hp specifications are based on the NEC and CEC guidelines for the North American market. The kW values are specified in multiples of 50. Both approximate values need to be adapted to the motor which is actually used.

Operation of Siemens high-voltage motors The protection concept for high-voltage motors when fed from converters involves two insulating bearings to avoid damaging bearing currents. Moreover, shaft grounding is absolutely necessary so that no voltage can be established at the motor shaft with respect to ground. The shaft is either grounded using a rotary pulse encoder with integrated grounding track at the non-drive end, or using a separate grounding brush at the motor drive end. In the second case, the rotary pulse encoder must be mounted at the non-drive end. In order to additionally protect the bearings of the driven load, we recommend that an insulated coupling is used. Operating standard line motors (only SINAMICS GM150 in IGBT version) It should be noted that only driven loads with a square-law load torque (e.g. fans, pumps, compressors) can be operated and that operation in the field weakening range is not permitted. The possible rated output frequencies (corner frequencies) are limited to a range of 30 Hz to max. 66 Hz. The frequency setting range is 1:10.

The VSM10 senses the line supply voltage regarding phase position, frequency and amplitude. To realize this, a potential transformer is used that is provided on the primary side of the circuit-breaker on the plant side.

24-pulse infeed for SINAMICS GM150

For SINAMICS GM150 in the IGBT and IGCT versions the circuit for the 24pulse infeed (Option N15) is realized in various ways. However, as a result of the more general representation of the circuit versions and in the catalog this cannot be identified. The following two diagrams are intended to show the principle difference between the parallel circuit configuration (in the case of IGBTs) and the series circuit (in the case of IGCTs). The Basic Line Modules (each with two diode rectifiers) are fed from two three-winding transformers with 7.5 offset on the primary side. A 12-pulse configuration is obtained as a result of the 30 phase shift between the two rectifiers of one DC link half. As the infeeds of the two DC link halves are phase-shifted through 15 with respect to one another, a 24-pulse configuration is achieved when the two halves have the same load. In the IGBT case, in addition the difference between the secondary voltages of one transformer must be less than 1 % under load.

Engineering instructions for transformers

Hinweis The section about engineering transformers on Pages 7/10 and 7/11 of Catalog D 12 2009 will be replaced by the following text. For additional information on selecting and dimensioning transformers, please contact your sales partner.

Overview
The SINAMICS GM150 and SINAMICS SM150 converters are always connected to the medium-voltage system through a converter transformer. By using the transformer the drive (converter and motor) is disconnected from the network and electrically isolated: The short-circuit power is limited to the maximum permissible values. Converter and motor are operated ungrounded. The line harmonic distortions and the voltage ripple are limited. A ground-fault monitor integrated in the converter monitors the insulation resistance against ground.

Configurations for SINAMICS GM150

For the 12-pulse Basic Line Module of the SINAMICS GM150 converter, a threewinding transformer is required. The secondary windings of the three-winding transformer have a phase shift around 30el, resulting in a 12-pulse infeed with accordingly lower line harmonic distortions. For the 24-pulse Basic Line Module, two three-winding transformers are required. Two transformers with primary windings offset by 15 degrees should be used. It should be ensured that the individual secondary windings have the same voltage. This is to reduce the line harmonics and to guarantee a symmetrical current distribution. In this case, a maximum deviation of 1 % between the two secondary windings connected in parallel is permissible. Instead of the two three-winding transformers a five-winding transformer can also be used in consultation with the transformer manufacturer.

Configurations for SINAMICS SM150

A two-winding transformer is required for each Active Line Module. In the case of a parallel operation of two or three complete converter units, it is also possible to use a three- or four-winding transformer with shifted windings for the suppression of line harmonics.

SINAMICS SM150
Transformer secondary voltage (phase-phase, conductor-conductor): SINAMICS SM150 in the IGCT version: 3.3 kV SINAMICS SM150 in the IGBT version: 3.3 kV or 4.16 kV If, in addition, the converter is to supply a noticeable level of capacitive reactive power to compensate other inductive loads connected to the line supply, then the secondary no-load voltage of the transformer must be dimensioned lower. This is necessary to ensure that the converter voltage of 3.3 kV or 4.16 kV is sufficiently high. As a consequence, the maximum power that can be transferred is reduced. For extremely high surge powers, the secondary no-load voltage must also be dimensioned somewhat lower.

Leakage reactance, impedance voltage

Transformer leakage reactances

The required minimum protection values of the leakage reactance for the various converter types can be taken from the following table. These values include all of the inductances between the line supply and converter: line short-circuit inductance, transformer inductance, reactor inductance.

1) The minimum leakage inductances LS,min can be calculated according to the following formula: XS,min = 2*fNline* LS,min (with fNline = line frequency).

Transformer impedance voltage

For the selected leakage reactance XS (see above), the required impedance voltage ratio vK (for each secondary winding) depends on the rated apparent power rating of the transformer SNTrans (for each secondary winding) and can be calculated using the following formula.

vK =

General information regarding the operation of highvoltage motors

High-voltage motors can generate voltages when they are driven by the load itself as a result of the plant or system configuration. The magnitude of the voltage that is fed back essentially depends on the speed and the type of motor excitation employed. The following must be carefully observed so that the work can be safely carried out on the converter power section when the high-voltage motor is turning:

For permanent-magnet synchronous motors, options L49 (make-proof grounding switch at the converter output) and L52 (circuit breaker at the converter output) must be selected. For induction motors and permanently excited synchronous motors, if the motor is driven by the load, then one of the options L49 or L52 should be selected.

1) The specifications for the rated input current and the power data in hp and kW are approximate values only; these have been calculated for operation with induction motors and for a typical power factor cos phi and motor efficiency. The rated output current is used as basis for the calculation. The kW and hp values lie in a power range, which is obtained by selecting the following values: A motor power factor between 0.85 and 0.88 as well as a motor efficiency of 96 %. The rated input current also depends on the line power factor, for which a typical value of between 0.94 and 0.96 was assumed. The hp specifications are based on the NEC and CEC guidelines for the North American market. The kW values are specified in multiples of 50. Both approximate values need to be adapted to the motor which is actually used.

2) Approx. 5 % of the power loss is dissipated into the atmosphere. 3) Without cooling system. 4) In addition, 20 A pre-charging current for 25 s. 5) Figures refer to a subsystem; see "Circuit designs" for the number of subsystems to be connected on the line and motor side. 6) The maximum permissible cable length must be observed (see Power cables in Section 7 of the catalog). 7) The specified dimensions and weights include the cooling unit, however no options.

The kW values are specified in multiples of 50. 1) The specifications for the rated input current and the power data in hp and kW are approximate values only; these have been calculated for operation with induction motors and for a typical power factor cos phi and motor efficiency.

7) The specified dimensions and weights include the cooling unit and option Y17 (sine-wave-filter), however no additional options.

Correction and supplement to the technical data

Below you will find an updated overview of the selection and ordering data as well as type-specific technical data for SINAMICS GM150 in the IGCT version. Modified and new data are highlighted in green.

3.1

Selection and ordering data

Standard dimensioning
If the motor data are not precisely known, then the converter should be selected and dimensioned based on the rated output current for typical induction motors (refer to the following table). If current derating is required, then the derating factors are applied to this rated output current. The current derating when operating converter units in parallel has already been taken into account for the values listed in the following table. Under certain conditions, output currents higher than those specified in the table are possible; also refer to the section Detailed dimensioning".

Detailed dimensioning
When the motor data are precisely known, then the converters can also be operated with higher output currents. In this case, the rated motor current must be below the maximum thermal converter output current and the motor short-circuit current must be less than the maximum permissible motor short-circuit current of the converter (for both limit values, refer to the following table).

In so doing, it should be noted that the motor short-circuit current is defined as follows: The motor short-circuit current is the current that flows in the first 100 ms in a system if all sub-systems are short-circuited and the leakage paths are saturated. For higher rated output currents, the type-specific technical data can differ (refer to the tables in the following section). If you have any questions in this regard, please contact your Siemens sales partner. For detailed dimensioning, the current derating factors should be applied to the maximum thermal output current of the converter. The required current derating when converter units are connected in parallel has already been taken into account for the values specified in the following table.

The kW values are specified in multiples of 500. Both approximate values need to be adapted to the motor which is actually used. 2) Approx. 5 % of the power loss is dissipated into the atmosphere. 3) Without cooling system. 4) Figures refer to a subsystem; see "Circuit designs" for the number of subsystems to be connected on the line and motor side. 5) The maximum permissible cable length must be observed (see Power cables in Section 7 of the catalog). 6) The specified dimensions and weights include the cooling unit, however no options.

New product versions

The medium-voltage drive converter series is extended with a new air-cooled and water-cooled regenerative IGBT version. The converters are equipped on the line side with an Active Line Module, allowing full regeneration of power into the line (as with SINAMICS SM150 in IGCT version). Both the Active Line Module and the motor-side Motor Module utilize HV-IGBT as power device. In the following, you can find selection and ordering data as well as technical data of the types already released for sale. In further steps, additional air-cooled and water-cooled types with enhanced power rating will follow. Note Sine-wave filters (option Y15) and corresponding data are available on request.
