Date

: : Does more salt dissolve in hotter water?

P roblem statement Aim

: To study the relationship between the temperature of distilled water and the mass of sodium chloride salt dissolved in the water.

Hypothesis : The higher the temperature of distilled water, the greater is the mass of sodium chloride salt that can dissolve in the water. Variables : (a) Manipulated (b) Responding (c) Constant Apparatus : 100 cm3 beaker, 50 cm3 measuring cylinder, thermometer, electronic balance, spatula, glass rod, wire gauze, tripod stand, Bunsen burner. Materials :

: Temperature of water : Mass of salt dissolved in water : Volume of water, size of salt

Table salt (sodium chloride), NaCl, distilled water. P rocedure/Method : 1. Approximately 100 g of salt is placed in a beaker A using a spatula. The mass of the beaker together with the salt are weighed using an electronic balance and it is recorded as the initial mass. 50 cm3 of distilled water is measured and poured into another beaker B. The temperature of the water is measured and recorded. The salt in the beaker A is scooped into the beaker B little at a time using a spatula. A glass rod is used to stir the mixture. The salt is stopped adding as soon as no more salt can be dissolved in the water where a little salt has sunk to the bottom of the beaker. The beaker A containing the remaining salt is weighed again using an electronic balance and it is recorded as the final mass. Steps 1 to 6 are repeated using 50 cm3 of distilled water at 40.0 oC, 50.0 oC, 60.0 oC and 70.0 o C. The results are recorded in a table. A graph of mass of salt against temperature of water is plotted.

Mass of salt dissolved in 50 cm3 of distilled water (g) [ m1 m2 ] 8.20

8.64 8.84 9.08 9.40

Inferences : The . the temperature of water, the . the mass of salt that can dissolve in the water. Interpreting data : From the graph, (a) (b) (c) Discussions : 1. In this experiment : when the temperature is 55.0 oC, the mass of salt that can dissolved is . g. when the temperature is 75.0 oC, the mass of salt that can dissolved is . g. when the temperature is 00.0 oC, the mass of salt that can dissolved is . g.

Conclusion : When the temperature of water increases, the mass of salt that can dissolve in the water .
