HOW TO USE

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS IN YOUR ALTERING THE DRILL & ATTACHING THE EXTENSION - DegreasetheLiner Drillandchuckitinthelathesoonlyabout58"ofthebuttendoftheshank protrudesfromthechuck.Useadialindicatortomakesurethedrillistrue inthejawsofthechuck,andadjustifneeded.MountaJacobschuckin thetailstockandinstallacenter-drill.Center-drillthedrillsshankusing plentyofDo-Drillorothergoodcuttingoil.Useasharpdrillwithplentyof Do-Drill;clearyourchipsfrequently,anduseanappropriatespeedforthe drillingoperation..22 Drill:Drilla316"diameterx1"deepholeintheshank ofthe.22linerdrill.Other size Drills:Useadrillonesizesmallerthanthe ExtensionRodyouaregoingtoattach.Theholeshouldbe1"to114"deep. Allowthepartstocoolcompletelyinthevisebeforeremovingthem.Clean upanyexcessfluxfromthepartsfollowingthemanufacturersdirections. Becertainthatnoexcessfluxorsilversolderremainsontheshankofthe LinerDrillitself;thiscancausetheLinerDrilltobindinthedrilledhole, andpossiblyruinthebarrel,breakthedrill,orboth. DRILLING THE BARREL -Aswithanyworkonfirearms,makesurethegun isUNLOADEDandboththemagazineandchamberareEMPTY.Following themanufacturersinstructions,disassemblethegunandremovethebarrel fromthereceiver.Atthispoint,itwouldbeworthwhiletomakeadetailed, dimensionedsketchofthebreechofthebarrel,payingattentiontothedepth ofextractorcuts,integralfeedramps(ifpresent),andanyotherdetailsthat youmaylaterneed.Checkthemuzzleendforcrownshape;willyoureuse thefactorytypecrown,orchangeittoadifferentdesign?Again,sketchany detailsworthremembering. Drill Extension Lightly chamfer/break sharp edges. Length of turned section must match drilled hole in shank of drill. Diameter of turned section .002" smaller than drilled hole.

Securethebarrelinapaddedbenchvisetoprotectanyoriginalfinish.The barrelshouldbeataboutelbowheighttothepersondoingthework,withthe muzzlepointedveryslightlydown.Placeacontainerunderthemuzzleto catchanyexcessDo-Drillthatmaydripfromthebarrel.Atrashcanunder thebreechwouldbehelpfultocatchchipsasthedrillisremovedfromthe boreateachcut.Sincetheextensionanddrilltogethermaybeasmuchas 10"long,makesurethereissufficientclearancearoundthebenchandvise todothework.Keepthechipbrushandoilcanhandytothework,asboth willbeneededveryfrequently. Whendrillingacenterfirebarrel,keepinmindthatthesebarrelswere usuallymadeoftougher/hardersteelthanmost.22RFbarrels.Bepatient! If drilling from the breech end of the barrel - the recommended method -machineabushingtosupportthepilotwhileitisinthechamber,before itreachesthebore.Alesseffectivebutsimplerpilotbushingcanbemade fromthefronthalfofanemptycartridgecase.Afterthechamberhasbeen drilledouttoabouthalfitsdepth,thepilotbushingcanberemoved.Atthis point,theLinerDrillspilotwillbesupportedbythebore. BEFORESTARTINGTODRILL,READTHROUGHTHESEINSTRUCTIONSAGAIN,VERYCAREFULLY,TOBESUREYOUUNDERSTAND THEM AND HAVE ALL OF THE SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT ON HANDTHATWILLBENEEDEDTOFINISHTHEJOB. Inthecaseofa.22 barrel,squirtsomeoilinthechamberontheLiner Drill,andpositionthedrillspilotinthechamberbeforestartingthedrill. Witha.32-20 barrel,placethepilotonthedrillspilot,oilthechamberand pilotendoftheLinerDrill,andplacetheLinerDrillpilotintothechamber. MakesuretheLinerDrillisalignedproperlywiththebore...youcancheck easilyforsidealignment.Haveasecondpersonchecktheverticalalignment thefirstfewtimesyoudrillabarrel.Youwillsoongetthehangofit.Back thecuttingedgeoftheDrillLinerawayfromthebarrelbyabout132"and turniton.UseaSLOWSPEED--about80to300rpm--andadvancethe LinerDrillintothechamber.IftheLinerDrilltriestocatchinthestarting cut, stop immediately and remove it. Use a small scraper, Dremel hand grinderwithsmallstones,orfiles,asappropriate,toremoveanyburrsthat theLinerDrillhaskickedup,andstartover.Donotswitchthedrillmotor intoreverseandtrytospinitoutofthecut...youmaybreakit.Ifitjamsin thehole,turnthedrillbackwardBYHANDuntilthecuttingedgeisclear, andthenremovetheLinerDrillfromthecutwhilethemotoristurning withforwardrotation. Thelimitingfactorinhowmuchmetalcanberemovedateachcutisthe hardness/toughnessofthebarrelmaterial,speedofthedrillmotor,degree ofsharpnessofthedrillandflutelengthofthedrill.Iftheflutesbecome fullypackedwithchips,theLinerDrillmayjamintheholeandbreak.Dependingontheabovefactors,cleartheLinerDrillofthechipsevery14"to 7 16"oftravel,minimum.UseplentyofDo-Drillorothergoodgradecutting oil...itwillhelplubricatethecutandhelptheLinerDrillfromoverheating. Itscheapinsuranceagainstajammedorbrokendrill...GIVETHELINER DRILLANDHOLEAGOODSQUIRTEVERYTIMEITGOESINTOTHE BARREL. IfyoufindbeforetheworkisstartedthattheLinerDrillpilotislarger thantheboreofthebarrel,thepilotwillhavetobegroundtofit.Thepilots ofourShort,PilotedBarrelLinerDrillshavebeengroundtojustunder SAAMIspecificationsfortheirrespectivecalibers.Someoldergunsbuilt longbeforethestandardizationofbarrelandcartridgedimensions,may haveundersizedbores. BONDING THE LINER - Refertotheinstructionsinthe.22 Caliber Barrel NOTE: Brownells/Redman Barrel Liners have a groove cut on the outside of the liner at one end. THIS IS THE BREECH END of the liner. Position the groove so it will be removed completely when the breech end of the liner is faced off as described below. Lining Instructions & Equipmentbooklet,forbondingthelinertothebarrel usingACRAGLASorbysolderingitinplace. CHAMBERINGTHE BARREL -Afterthelinerhasbeensecurelybondedtothe barrel,andtheACRAGLAShashadseveraldaystocure(orinthecaseofa linerwhichhasbeensolderedintothebarrel,iscoolenoughtohandlesafely) thebarrelshouldbecleanedupasappropriatetothebondingmethod,to removeanyexcessACRAGLAS,solderand/orsolderingflux. Althoughthechamberingmethodusedinthe.22 Caliber Barrel Lining Instructions & Equipmentbookletcanbeusedsuccessfullyon.22s,most .32-20sareoflockedbreechdesign.Manyofthemhavedevelopedexcessive headspaceovertheyearsofuseandabusethatledtothisrelining.Because ofthepossibilityofexcessiveheadspaceontheseriflesbeforerelining,itis besttocutthechamberafterthelinerhasbeenbonded.Thereceiverwill needtobepartiallyreassembledinordertotakemeasurementsforchambering.Cleanthereceiverinternallypriortoreassembly...anydirtonthe lockingsurfacesoftheboltorlockingblockwillgivefalsemeasurements, whichcanleadtocuttingthechambertoodeepandbuildinginexcessive headspace.Reassemblethereceivertothepointwheretheboltorbreechblockcanbelockedintotheclosedposition,asitwouldbeforfiring.Using

adepthmicrometer,measurefromthefrontfaceofthereceiver,wherethe barrelshouldermeetsthereceiver,backtothefaceofthelockedboltor breechblock.Recordthismeasurement...itisthedistancethattherearface oftheGOheadspacegaugewillbefromthebarrelsshoulderwhenthe chamberhasbeencut.Securethebarrel,breechendfacingup,inapadded benchvise.PlaceacontainerunderthemuzzletocatchanyDo-Drillcuttingoilthatmaydripfromthemuzzleasthechamberofthelinedbarrelis cut.UseaBrownellsRifleMuzzleFacingtool,withanappropriatepilotfor thebarrelandthe90cutter,totakethelinerdownflushwiththebreech endofthebarrel.BesuretouseplentyofDo-Drillwhenfacingtheliner. Analternatemethodwouldbetofilethelinerdownflushwiththebreech ofthebarrel. Securethefinishchamberingreamerinthetapwrench.Oiltheflutes ofthereamerandthebreechendofthebarrelwithplentyofDo-Drill.Place thereamerinthebore,andturnclockwisetwoorthreeturns,witheven, gentle,downwardpressureonthetaphandle.Continueturningthereamer clockwiseandremoveitfromthebore.Neverreversetherotationofthe reamertoremoveitfromthebore.Youmayjamchipsbetweenthebackof theflutesandreamer.Cleananyoilandchipsfromthechamberandbore withachipbrush.Re-oilthereamerandchamberendofthebarrel,andtake severalmoreturnsonthereamer. Continuecuttingthechamberandcleaningitfrequently,untiltherim cutportionofthereameriswithin 132"ofthebreechofthebarrel.Clean the chamber and bore thoroughly, and insert theGO headspace gauge intothechamber.Usethedepthmicrometertomeasurefromtherearface oftheheadspacegaugetotheshoulderofthebarrelwhichbuttsuptothe receiverwhenthebarrelisinplace.Subtractfromthisfigurethedistance yourecordedearlier--thedistancefromthefrontfaceofthereceivertothe boltface.Thisdifferenceisthedepththatthechamberstillhastobereamed. Atthispoint,goverySLOWLYincuttingthechamber...cuttoodeeplyand thenewchamberwillhaveexcessiveheadspace. Whenthechamberhasbeencuttotheproperdepth,referbacktoyour originalsketchesofthebarrelbreech,andformanynecessaryextractor slots, feed ramps, or breechbolt clearance cuts. Deburr the chamber and extractorcutsasrequired.Cleanthebreechofthebarrel,payingcloseattentiontothethreadedshank.Cleanthechamberandboreofthelinedbarrel. Reassemblethebarreltothereceiver,makingsurethebarrelisattheproper positionsothesightswillbesquarewiththereceiver. Followingthemanufacturersinstructions,reassembletherifle,paying closeattentiontoanySAFETYfeatures.InserttheGOheadspacegauge intothechamberandgentlyclosethebolt.Theboltshouldclosewithno feeloftheGOgauge.IftheboltdoesnotfullyclosewiththeGOgauge inthechamber,thechamberneedstobereameddeeper.Makeabsolutely certainthattheresistancetoclosingyoufeelisfromtheheadspacegauge andnotfromdirt,chips,amisalignedbarrel,orincompleteclearancecuts. RemovetheGOgauge,andinserttheNO-GOgauge.Gentlyattemptto closethebolt.Rememberthatanyheadspacegaugeisaprecision,hardened toolsteelinstrument,andiftheboltisforgedclosedonagauge,thegauge, bolt,orchamber(orallthree)maybedamaged.WiththeNO-GOgaugein thechamber,theboltshouldNOTbeabletobeclosedfullyinalockedbreech firearm.Youshouldhavesomefeelorresistancetoclosing,asopposedto whenthechamberisempty.Iftheheadspacechecksoutproperly,inserta DUMMYcartridgeinthechamber,andcycletheaction.Paycloseattention tothefunctionofanySAFETYfeatures.Iftherifleisarepeater,insert severalDUMMYcartridgesinthemagazine,andcycletheactiontobesure thefeeding,extractionandejectionmechanismsarefunctioningcorrectly. Ifeverythingchecksoutproperly,thebarrelmaybecrowned. CROWNING THE MUZZLE -Securethemuzzleendofthebarrelinthevise andhacksawofftheprotrudingendoftheliner,leavingabout18"extending pastthemuzzle.(Acleaningpatchinthebore,about1"belowthemuzzle, willcatchanychipsandmakecleaningupeasier.)Ifaflatcrownistobe used,aswascommononmanyolderrifles,useaBrownellsRifleMuzzle Facing&ChamferingTool,withtheappropriatepilotandthe90cutter,to takethelinerdowntotheoriginalbarrelmuzzle.Besuretouseplentyof Do-Drillwhenfacingthelinerandmuzzle.Cuttingafewthousandthsofan inchfartherthantheoriginalmuzzlefacewillhelptoblendintheliner. Useeitherthe45orthe79(11isthemorecommonname)chamfering cuttertofinishoffthecrown.Alternatemethodsaregiveninthe.22 Caliber Barrel Lining Instructions & Equipmentbooklet. Afterthemuzzlehasbeencrowned,theboreshouldbecleanedthoroughly, andtherifletest-firedwithliveammunitioninasafeandappropriatemanner. Reassemble the firearm according to the manufacturers instructions. Checkforproperfunctioningusing ACTION PROVING DUMMIES. Make sure ALL SAFETY MECHANISMS are fully functional as designed and approved by the manufacturer. If these tests prove satisfactory, test-fire thefirearmwithliveammunitionina SAFEandAPPROPRIATEmanner. IMPORTANT!StarttheliveammunitiontestsbyfirstloadinganACTION PROVING DUMMY,thenaliveround,intothemagazine.Onlyafterseveraltestshavebeenconductedinthismannershouldadditionalroundsbe placedinthemagazineandfired.
