Agriculture:

In agriculture sector, paddy cultivation gets importance in Karainagar. Paddy is cultivated as rain fed crop during Maha season. Total extent of weddumized paddy land is 553 Hec. In 2007/08 Maha season, paddy cultivation was done in 402.2 Hec. and harvested on 391.4 Hec. with the production of 242.58 Mt. There were some other field crops also cultivated in 2008. In Karainagar for the Maha season in 2007/08, Chillie was cultivated in 2.0Hec. with the production of 1.4Mt. Red onion was cultivated in 0.3 Hec. with the production of 0.6 Mt. Green gram was cultivated in 0.8 Hec. and 0.5 Mt. production was obtained. In 1 Hec. land maize was cultivated and 2.6 Mt produced. Gingelly was cultivated in 1.6 Hec. with the production of 0.9 Mt. Some fruits like Mango, Jack and Banana also cultivated in few areas. Mango was cultivated in 1 Hec. and 12 Mt. Mango fruits were obtained. Jack fruit production was done in 0.5 Hec. and 25 Mt. were obtained. Banana cultivated in 0.25 Hec. and 12.5 Mt. was produced in the year 2008. There is one registered Farmers Organization is operating in Karainagar. Also there is only one Fertilizer store is functioning in Karainagar. Livestock:
At present, there is less importance given by the people to get involved in this sector. But there are many acres of grass lands available in the Karainagar division. These grass lands also need proper tendering. In the year 2009, there were 1065 cows of which 635 were milk Cows that were raised in the area. 448,950 Liters of milk was produced in the year 2008. 62 artificial inseminations had been carried out in the same year. There were 890 Goats in the Karainagar area. More than 8,000 Cock birds are also grown in poultries in the area.

Fisheries:
Jaffna lagoon bordering Karainagar division with the length of 9 km. The geographical location of this lagoon is an ideal closed home salt water area for fish, prawns and shrimps culture. There are 853 fishing families with 1797 active fishermen in the Karainagar division. There are 10 fishing cooperative societies with 3,493 members in the area. In the year 2008, fresh fish production of 558 Mt was done. In the same year, 47.02 Mt dried fish production was made. There are 37 out boat motor fishing crafts and 293 nonmechanized fishing crafts available in Karainagar division. Traditional fishing methods are also practiced.

Irrigation:
Rainfall is the main source of water for cultivation. It is received by North East and South West monsoon. 82% of the precipitation is achieved during Maha season (October to January). There are 14 minor tanks located in this division. These minor tanks provide irrigable to 398 Hec. of land with 6,971.48 Hec. as catchments area.
