*Standard Summary

Principal contribution is the application of principles and knowledge relevant to the administration and support of the research project. Under limited direction, performs complex lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making contributions to methodology. Collects, records and analyzes data. Conducts literature reviews. Participates in writing reports and manuscripts. Oversees the management of equipment and supplies. Ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates. Trains and oversees the work of research support personnel. Responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: transcribing and coding data; developing data collection instruments; presenting research findings at staff meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences; assisting with building databases; and recruiting and scheduling research subjects. Responsibilities may include the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. May serve as a lead research specialist in smaller labs.

Unit Job Summary

Under the general oversight of the Director of Research and Operations (DRO), the Research Project Coordinator supports, coordinates, and conducts economic and spatial research and analysis and data collection. This individual works closely with the DRO to craft and carry out data collection strategies and has supervisory responsibility for some student data collection and entry staff. The Project Coordinator supports faculty and trainee investigators in preparing datasets and in conducting statistical analyses, and may collaborate with investigators in the preparation of publications. The Project Coordinator has primary responsibility for key data-discovery and data-collection projects. This person is the primary geospatial analysis expert on the Center's projects, and must be proficient with GIS software and spatial analytical methods. The Project Coordinator will also be responsible for technical direction of the development of the mapping server and developing GIS tools for internal and external use. The individual will also be responsible for developing interest in the Center for Population Economic (CPE)'s GIS data in workshops and conferences. This position reports directly to the Director of Research and Operations and works closely with the Director for Data Acquisition.

Education

Bachelor's degree or higher in economics, history, demography, or allied quantitative discipline required.

Experience

A minimum of one year of relevant research experience required Knowledge of and experience with ArcGIS server and web application development required. Experience in collection of original and aggregate data from archives, libraries, online repositories, and other sources preferred.

Competencies

Strong skills in MS Excel and STATA and/or SAS for analysis of large datasets required. Strong skills with ArcGIS software, ArcObjects development, and GIS analysis required. Knowledge of statistical approaches, research design, and data analysis methods consistent with an undergraduate degree in economics, statistics, or similar field required. Ability to train, supervise, and lead others required. Flexibility and ability to realign priorities and goals in response to changing circumstances required. Proven creative and constructive approach to problem-solving and sound independent judgment required. Ability to set priorities and successfully meet research goals required. Ability to travel required. Professional demeanor and dress required at all times. Demonstrated competence in academic and technical writing preferred.
