(Community and School Support CASS) Part-time (maximum three courses at once) Starts: August and January Fees: $274 per course Equivalent to a one-year certicate program (individual completion time varies) Distance education through Prince George; offered through Quesnel campus on a rotating basis Careers The Education Assistant program is one of CNCs Community and School Support programs (CASS formerly Developmental Disabilities). CASS is based on the following values: Individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to support services that respect inclusion and choice; Individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to work with skilled and respectful support staff in community and school settings. In addition to the Education Assistant program, CASS offers these two credentials, both listed in this calendar: Community Support Worker Certicate Human Service Citation With an Education Assistant Certicate, youll be prepared to work as a teachers aide or education assistant, providing assistance to children with disabilities in school settings. The program is designed for practicing support workers. It enhances competence in inclusion; supporting literacy; human development; learning and support strategies; communication; school, community and relationships; and professional practice and accountability. Admission requirements All applicants must provide a transcript or other ofcial proof that they have completed English 12 (with a nal grade of at least C), or equivalent. Note 2: Students have ve years from the time of rst registration to complete all of the course and practicum requirement for either the Community Support Worker (CSW) Certicate or the Education Assistant (EA) Certicate. New students are admitted to the program in one of four ways: Path #1: Paid Paraprofessional For students employed as paraprofessionals providing support services to persons with developmental disabilities: Verication (such as a transcript) of English 12 or equivalent with a minimum C grade A letter from an employer (on agency letterhead) conrming employment. Path #2: Volunteer Service Provider For students volunteering service to people with developmental disabilities: Verication (such as a transcript) of having English 12 or equivalent with a minimum C grade A CASS Volunteer Experience Record (available at http://mail.cnc. bc.ca//blogs/CASS/) completed by a supervisor, documenting at least 65 hours of direct service in the past three years. Path #3: Caregiver For students who are caregivers (such as a parent, guardian, or sibling of a person with a developmental disability) and over 19 years of age: Verication (such as a transcript) of having completed English 12 or equivalent with a minimum C grade A completed CASS Personal Statement Form (available at http://mail.cnc.bc.ca/blogs/CASS/). Path #4: Special Admission For those who do not yet qualify for full admission into the program. Special Admission students can register for one semester in CASS 110 and/or CASS 120. Verication (such as a transcript) of having completed English 12 or equivalent with a minimum C grade. Special Admission students must complete 65 hours of relevant volunteer experience with an individual with a developmental disability during their rst semester. To continue in the program, they must submit a Volunteer Experience Record (available at http://mail.cnc. bc.ca/blogs/CASS/) and apply for full admission. English 12 or equivalent: If you dont have English 12 or equivalent with a minimum C grade, you must write an English test at CNC. Its your responsibility to contact CNCs Centre for Student Success (1-800-371-8111, ext. 5837) and arrange to write this test. Note: If your results dont meet the required level, you must upgrade before admission to the program.

Elective: For information on approved electives, contact CNC Counselling and Advising. They must be equivalent to 3.0 credits at a post-secondary level of instruction. Criminal record search You will have to undergo a criminal record search through the RCMP. The cost of this search is your responsibility. A search which identies relevant criminal convictions may prevent you from doing a practicum or entering a clinical setting. Students who cannot enter the practicum or clinical component of the program cannot graduate from the program.
