Dear Readers
Hi there, I hope you are all still enjoying the lovely weather. Good weather is always a double edged sword, the Sunshine helps to promote that feel good factor but unfortunately for the joy of having a few weeks of sunshine at the wrong time of year, causes our farmers and wildlife major problems. Crops dont grow, streams and rivers dry up or get very low, animals and birds, domestic or wild begin to suffer. Weve had some rain off and on lately, but not enough yet. Maybe we will have April showers turning up in June! Someone said to me once, It would be great if it just rained at night and let the sun shine through the day. Would that help, I dont know, it would certainly upset anyone or any animals who were out only at night! Since we are now into summer there are many local events taking place, keep your eyes peeled for dates on our notice board. Although not a weather pun, there seems to be a couple of clouds hovering over the area, we have the fight against the high speed train cutting across between Ladbroke and Southam on route to Birmingham and the wind farm proposed for Knightcote. Wind power is a good idea, however, I think that, as we are an island, surely it is better to build them a mile off the coast where people dont have to hear the swoosh of the turbine props at the end of their road. Take care until next time. Nicki

to newly planted trees and shrubs now can cause plants to fail not only now but also later in the year.
Patio Pots and Hanging Baskets Now is the time to be planting those pots, tubs and hanging baskets for vivid splashes of colour throughout the summer. A full range of bedding and basket plants are in stock at Farnborough Garden Centre, together with a massive selection of pots and planters together with hanging baskets and liners in many styles and materials. The garden pond can be stocked or restocked this month with both plants and snails. Farnborough Garden Centre now stocks a full range of water plants and moisture-loving plants together with water snails and freshwater mussels. Planting containers and aquatic compost are also available. If you haven't room for a full-size pond, come and look at our water features and fountains to give that lovely sound of running water in the garden. Continue to plant vegetable plants outdoors such as cabbage, sprouts, leeks, onions, marrows, runner beans, French beans etc. If you don't have a vegetable plot, try mixing some of these in flowerbeds or containers for that extra special taste of home-grown vegetables later in the year.

Roses
- Pests and diseases now begin to attack in the warm moist conditions and checks should be made regularly to decide if spraying is required. The chemicals available have diminished, but some organic or biological controls are also available. Deadhead flowers as they die back to encourage new buds. - Prune deciduous flowering shrubs as they finish flowering to keep in shape and encourage new growth that will flower next year. Remove old and dead wood first, then trim to shape, etc. Shrubs to keep an eye on for pruning include: lilac, deutzia, philadelphus, weigela and kolkwitzia, etc. It is still a good time to plant container-grown trees and shrubs, but please remember to water frequently and copiously, especially during dry spells. Vegetables -
June is one of the most colourful months in the garden and a time when gardeners can spend time to appreciate their efforts throughout the winter and spring. There is still plenty of time to add to the herbaceous border or herb bed, etc and the stocks of plants and sundries at Farnborough Garden Centre are probably at their biggest at this time of year.
We hope to see you visit us soon if only to sample the farmhouse ice cream or choose a cuddly or collector's Teddy Bear.
Greenhouses
- A wide range of vegetables for greenhouse use are now on sale at the Garden Centre including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons,

Wind Turbines
Local MP Jeremy Wright has been on a fact-finding trip to a wind farm in Cambridgeshire which has made him even more determined to fight plans for a similar development at Knightcote. Mr Wright, whose Kenilworth and Southam constituency covers Knightcote, visited a 12-turbine site near Huntingdon. One thing is inescapable, he said after the visit, These turbines are huge structures which utterly devastate the immediate landscape and, because they move and because of their colour, they draw the eye. Finding the right location for wind turbines is not just about the amount of wind available but also about the damage they do to views of the spectacular countryside. In general, I believe that wind turbines should be offshore, not inland, where visual impacts are less and the strength of the wind greater. The company wanting to build the wind farm at Knightcote, Broadview, has already won, on appeal, permission to erect a 60-metre high measuring mast. Local action group Feldon Residents Against Wind farm Turbines (FRAWT) is fighting
Volunteer Services, Voluntary Action Stratford-on-Avon District (VASA) We are in urgent need of volunteer drivers in Southam and surrounding villages. This vital service helps mainly older people, with a genuine need for transport to attend their appointments at Hospitals, Doctors, Dentists , Opticians and Day Centres. We average around 3000 passenger trips a year in the Southam area and this service is very much appreciated as the people would often not be able to get to Hospitals in Coventry, Warwick, Rugby, Birmingham etc., without our assistance. The local appointments are equally important especially in isolated villages. Volunteer drivers can help as much or little as they would like and we work around what they can offer even if it was on an occasional basis or half day a week. The mileage rate is 45p per mile for authorised journeys. Our Southam Office is based at The Grange, Coventry Road, Southam and we have an excellent volunteer office team that covers the office 5 mornings a week. We work as a Team and welcome new volunteers. Wheel Chair Short Term Loan Service We also hold wheel chairs at our Southam Office up to one months loan, free of charge, but do appreciate a donation. Our Southam telephone number is 01926 817525 - A.M. only. If you require any further information I would be pleased to have a chat with you. Southam of Yesteryear
My article last month in which a mention was made of Southams Town Band; has resulted in further information that I think warrants mention. I had been told that as a young chap Stewart Pittom was in the band, so when I met Stewart out side the Co-Op, it was a golden opportunity to find out more about the towns musical past. Although it carried the town name, its members were not all Southam folk, they coming from the surrounding villages. Some Southam members he mentioned were the three Lea brothers who lived up Abbey Lane, and Mr. Priest; perhaps living in Old Road. Within five minutes of leaving Stewart, I met a lady who was in infants school with me, now Mrs. Gillian Flowers but formerly Gill Usher. She had just come from Southam Office Supplies; where the Advertiser is compiled and produced, after having a photograph of the band re printed. Within that photograph was her dad who I think was standing next to Mr. Ron Cleals dad; whom I mentioned in last months issue of the Advertiser. During my chat with Stewart, he could not speak too highly of the band master Mr. Thomas Whites musical abilities. He, Stewart, said that their was no musical instrument he, Thom; could not play, many of which had no place in a silver band, they, being instruments of the orchestra. Mr.Cardalls Blue Ping Band being the closest Southam ever came to having an orchestra. Stewart recalled that at one Southam band concert; Thom entertained those listening, with a violin number, played on a carpenters saw. Stewart also said that those who could play an instrument and who wished to join the band, were auditioned in Thoms stone masons shed that stood in his stone masons yard. It being close by to the Napton Road bridge, and on the town side of the River bank. After a telephone chat with Stewart two days later; he recalled the following band members of the early 1950s. Mr Peter Hewer whose father kept the flower beds in good order down Coventry Street. Now under tarmac and grass, and used as little more than an extension to the foot path. If Mr. Hewer saw you put a foot on his pride and joy, he would chase you with his broom, shouting, I know who you are and I will tell your dad. How things have changed. Mr. Bernard Rawbone was also a band member. His dad, Len, who worked for Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft at Baginton; were I did my apprenticeship; was the head man, collecting the fairs for Mr. Aston of Marton, whose coaches took us and many others from villages around, who worked at AWA. The workforces when I started being around 11,000. Mr.Vic Hodges was a band member, Victor Hodges House being named after him. A Mr. Jack Baldwin whos nickname was Killer and I believe resided on Tattle Bank. A Mr. Hodges who I believe was a rope maker, whose son Ken was a car salesman with Soans of Leamington Spa.
Another band member was Mr . Joe Best who lived on Welsh Road East at the Gas House. This being the gas works managers house when Southam was producing its own gas. Joe running a coal coke and general haulage business from there. Two other Southam men were given to me as Mr Morgan and his son Ken ; they I believe lived on Banbury Road on the left as you pass over Browns Bridge. Not all Southam town band members were from Southam. I understand that Mr. Jim Rathbone from Southam was a member as was two of his family members from Napton. A Mr. Jase Windsor from Long Itchington who was a special constable and ran a small musical group in Long Itchington is the last man that I know of. Before continuing, I should mention that the Long Itchington cement works, when owned by Mr. Lister Kaye had its very own band, as did Bishops Itchington. Some information has come my way from a Mr. Kenneth Owen, who is a member of the Leamington History group, and is in the process of collecting information on

Warwickshire Bands for a forthcoming book. Starting in 1955, the following account is given. In the course of 1955 the band lost two prominent members, Mr. Sidney Cooper who passed away in the Warnford Hospital at Leamington Spa in the first week of June; and then Mr. Phil Hope aged 48. Both men having been active band members over many years. Phil Hope lived close to us at the mill; he living at Teviot Lodge as still does his daughter Dorothy. She in the passing of time is now Mrs. Dorothy Warner. Her husband Rex being a member of the Warner family that I think have lived in Stockton for many generations. At a meeting held in the Black Dog on Tuesday November 29th; under the watchful eye of Mr. J J Brown, presiding in the absence of the band President Mr. C. Borne; the band secretary Mr. Hall, most likely Mr. Phil, said that the band had not met since May. This as a result of the death of band members, and several having moved to pastures new. An effort had been made to seek help from member of the Bishops Itchington band, but this proved to be a complete failure. With reference to the Bishops Itchington band; as I know nothing about it, I am in no position to write any details, other than to give it a mention. At a band meeting at the Black Dog , the treasurer Mr. G Timms, reported a balance in hand of six pounds three shillings and four pence. This in present day currency
would be six pounds and seventeen pence. Due to inflation this would now be worth one hundred and seven pounds and forty eight pence. There had been neither incomes from engagements or dances, neither outgoing on music or instruments. A suggestion was made to holding a dance in January 1956, to supplement the cash in hand; this then moved on to the sad thought of closing the band down. At that point, it was decided to leave this major decision for a future date. I guess they were hoping that the passing of time would see a change in the bands fortunes However, the passing of time proved this was not to be. At that time, the bands major concern was to find a new band master. It was also decided to try and locate all the ex band members that were still in possession of uniforms and to have all instruments brought to a general meeting to be held in the near future. Officers elected for the forthcoming year were; President Mr. C.W. Bourne, Vice presidents Rev. R T Murray, J.J. Brown, and Mr. A.V. Hodges. Joint Bandmasters were Mr. S. Rathbone and Mr. Alan Reading. Secretary was given as Mr. G. Hall and Treasurer Mr. G. Timms. With reference to Mr. G. Hall; this may have been Mr. Phil Hall as he was one of the main stays of the band. His son Gerald was also a band member, but as of then he would still be a young man. Maybe he was the Secretary, but as Mr. Phil was the office secretary for Brewster Bros; my thoughts are that he was the most likely candidate for that position. Early in January, on Saturday the twelfth, the much respected Mr. Thomas Charles Frederick White past away at the age of 81 years. His funeral being on the
following Wednesday. Thomas as previously mentioned, had been a member of various bands all his life; many of those being as Band Master of Southams Town Band. He retiring from that post in December 1953. His retirement would appear to be the start of the bands slide to oblivion. There was no further reports of the band after 1956. In 1959, it was mentioned at a Parish Council meeting that they were having problems finding storage for the instruments of the former town band. At a meeting on Thursday 26th of November; it was reported that there was sufficient storage available at the library, and that the librarian was agreeable to the storage. The library then was in what are now shops to the left side of Budgens; with the Court House door facing you. An application was made to the Magistrates Court Committee, to obtain there permission. At a meeting of Southam Parish Council on Thursday 30th June 1960, it was reported that a letter was received from the County Civil Defence Officer. This granted the Council their permission for the use of a room at Southams Civil Defence Headquarters for the storage of instruments of the late Town Band; since the Band\s disbandment. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. L.E. Amor for his help in finding storage for the late bands instruments. That would appear to be the end of the band, and my last post blowing my own trumpet on its demise. I wish to express my thanks to Mr. Kenneth Owen, for information incorporated in this article. As previously mentioned, he is collecting information on Warwickshire Bands for a future book. Should anyone have information that would help him; he can be contacted at Leamingtons history group; or through me via the good offices of the Southam District Advertiser within Southam Office Supplies. Now having a rest, before deciding what to write about next month Regards to all. Bill Griff.

Pet Corner
Behind the Scenes
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a modern veterinary surgery? One of the most common comments we have when we show people around the surgery is Wow its just like a hospital! And of course that is exactly what it is. A modern small animal veterinary centre will have a team of qualified nurses and support staff who look after the specialised areas of the surgery to ensure that the vets have everything they need at a moments notice to treat the wide range of medical condition and pets that come in every day. A fast and accurate diagnosis is key to effective treatment and vets match their skill and experience with high tech diagnostic tools such as Digital x-ray, ultra sound, endoscopy and a variety of blood and urine laboratory tests. Having the equipment on-site means that results are available fast. The surgery will have a Prep room where pets are anaesthetised prior to surgery and small operations take place. Major surgery is performed in a separate and sterile theatre under strict hygiene protocols. You will see vets wearing surgical gowns, clogs, hats, gloves and masks and as with human surgery you should expect a newly autoclaved sterile surgical pack of drapes and instruments to be opened for each procedure. Just like on TV the nurse monitor pets vital signs throughout their surgery using electronic equipment and their skill and experience. Modern pharmaceutical development has meant that the drugs and anesthetics used are more specific and pets have a quicker, more comfortable recovery.
In the recovery kennels a nurse will be doing observations rounds throughout the day, taking heart and respiration rates, temperatures and monitoring behaviour. The kennels are small to discourage sick pets from too much activity but are warm and secure and the kennels nurse spends much of her time ensuring that each pet gets plenty of TLC. Like a hospital maintaining hygiene is vital.

Each surgery gets through a mountain of laundry each day and has to follow strict procedures for cleaning equipment and disposing of waste. Veterinary staff do a lot of cleaning! On a day to day basis you will generally just see the waiting and consult rooms but most vets are happy to show you around provided your visit wont interfere with ongoing surgical procedures and practice open days are an ideal opportunity to find out more of what your vet offers. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) who govern veterinary practice in the UK operate a Practice Standards Scheme to inform pet owners of the quality of their local veterinary surgery. Participating practices undergo a thorough inspection every four years and are awarded accreditation if they achieve the high standards set. If your surgery displays the RCVS accreditation you can be confident that your pet is getting the high level of care you would expect from your vet both in the consult room and behind the scenes.
Follow the paw prints to tour behind the scenes in our new surgery. Our vets and nurses will be delighted to show you around
