Your activity guide to the Gold Country

2011 Edition

37 things
youve gotta do in the foothills

1. Dive right in
Are you hoping to keep cool this summer by taking a dip in local pools? The Auburn area has just what you are looking for with the Sierra Pool at Recreation Park, 123 Recreation Drive, Auburn, and Placer Hills Pool at 1101 Meadow Lane in Meadow Vista. Sheryl Petersen, recreation services manager for the Auburn Area Recreation and Parks District, said there are several reasons why swimming is a great activity for the summer. The most important thing is that kids know how to swim, especially living in this area with the rivers and lakes so close by, Petersen said. The second thing is that its a

great family activity, because even if mom and dad dont want to go swimming, the kids always do. Mom and dad can bring a book and know their kids are safe. It can be a social activity, you can bring some neighbors. The recently re-opened Placer Hills Pool in Meadow Vista will be open daily through Aug. 13 for swimming lessons, water aerobics and public swim. Petersen said this years featured water program is Inner Tube Water Polo.

2. REEL ONE IN
Auburns outdoor scene isnt limited to the action on the trails. The American River offers a wide variety of options for those with a fishing pole, some bait and a little patience. Veteran fishing guide J.D. Richey grew up in Auburn and still enjoys getting out on the water locally. From an anglers standpoint, Auburn is located in the heart of some pretty spectacular fishing country, Richey said. The American River near town has rainbows, browns and smallmouth bass to chase and

nearby lakes like Folsom and Rollins feature trout, bass and several other attractive species. If youre willing and able to drive a little bit, there is a wide variety of fishing options in the region. Here, youre within striking distance of some epic High Sierra trout and kokanee fishing, Richey said. And down in the Valley, there are salmon, stripers, shad, bass and more! Check out www.fishwithjd.com for more information on the local fishing scene.

3. TAKE IT TO THE STREETS

Downtown Auburn is the place to be on Wednesday nights in the summer. Part of High Street is closed to cars and the roadway becomes a street fair, with music, family activities and plenty of food and fun. This year, Wednesday Night Live will be revving up June 15 and continuing through July 27 six straight Wednesdays. Times are 6 to 9 p.m. With the support of the Downtown Business Association and the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, High Street

4. Give some time

Love the quality of life in the foothills? Help maintain the great programs and places that residents have come to love by volunteering your time at one of many worthy nonprofits in the area. I think when youre volunteering for a local nonprofit you know youre making a difference right in your own community, said Leilani Vierra, CEO for the Placer SPCA. Nothing feels better than recognizing that and knowing that sometimes the littlest things make the biggest difference. Many options are available including the SPCAs new animal shelter in Auburn. Or check in with Seniors First or a local service club such as Lions or Rotary and get yours hands dirty.

continued from 2 from East Placer to Cleveland streets, is blocked off and the joys of strolling the street on a warm summer night emerges as one of the pleasures of summer. Jim Crosthwaite, event promoter, said organizers are striving for an atmosphere akin to Folsoms huge Thursday Night Marketplace, a weekly event that attracts thousands. This is Auburns second year for Wednesday Night Live. Last year was a lot of fun and we hope to see a lot of new people to enjoy Wednesday night in Auburn, Crosthwaite said.

5. CAUSE A RACQUET
Being an ace on the tennis court isnt just a recreational outlet its also a heartpumping game full of health benefits. That means while players work on their serve, they are also keeping their bodies healthy. While there are the obvious benefits to getting out on the court, Bill Kreger, tennis director at the Auburn Racquet Club, said one thing sets tennis apart from other forms of exercise. There is the obvious about tennis that everybody knows, it burns calories, increases fitness, bone density and decreases stress, Kreger said. What you have in tennis is social competition and that

keeps people coming back. Kreger said his clients play well into their 70s and membership trends show those who participate in tennis stick around exponentially longer.

6. SHOP FOR SOMETHING SHINY

Custom-crafted treasures, one-of-a-kind pieces and friendly family-owned stores make jewelry shopping a great way to spend an afternoon in Auburn.

Jewelers are scattered throughout Downtown, Old Town and the Highway 49 corridor, with selections for every taste and budget. At the Golden Swann Collectibles & Jewelry Gallery on Lincoln Way, Margareta Swann and Ben Azgharzadeh have a dedicated clientele based on more than three decades in business. Many of her longtime customers are collectors of Swarovski, Lladro, Armani and similar genre art pieces. Along with the delicate vases and figurines, there are modern and estate-jewelry pieces, too. I have some really nice period pieces, Swann said. I

7. Party with Uncle Sam

Get a double-dose of 4th of July fun by taking in the Independence Day Celebration on July 3 in Colfax, then enjoy the Auburn Family Fourth Celebration and Old Town Auburn Fourth of July Celebration. Drive up to Colfax on Sunday and spend the day getting to know the neighbor. Arts and crafts booths open at 10 a.m., as do the food and drink booths. At 11 a.m. watch the Little Patriots Parade. Dont miss the Quinn Family Klowns and other entries in the Lions Main Parade that begins at noon. Take in the Downhill Derby at 2 p.m., and stay for afternoon music, food and drink. According to Laurel Mathe, president of Colfax Pride, the organization that sponsors the celebration, the fireworks display is scheduled to return next year. On Monday, Old Town Auburn will hold a pancake breakfast and a greasedpole contest and other old-fashioned kid

Afternoon activities at the Gold Country Fairgrounds include beauty pageants, patriotic readings, reenactments, karaoke, food and drink booths and motorcycle speedway demonstrations. The traditional July 4 parade starts at 7 p.m. at the top of Lincoln Way and ends at the fairgrounds, where the fireworks display begins at 9:35 p.m.

8. RESEARCH REDS AND WHITES

Summer is on its way and you are looking for some beautiful places to try some tasty wines. The foothills are a great place to start, and most

local wineries only charge about $5 for the experience. There is a lot of diversity here, said Gary Moffat, coowner of Carpe Vino in Old Town Auburn. We have got many new winemakers that have tried new approaches and been working with new varieties, and they are doing a great job. Placer County inherently is just a great place to go, to drive, and many of the wineries are just in beautiful spots. People say places in Placer County are kind of like Napa used to be. Its more relaxed, and less crowded and tends to be less expensive to do.
~Bridget Jones

9. GET WET
Adrenaline junkies and weekend warriors alike can take on the open water in a kayak, raft or canoe this summer. Experienced rapid riders can get all of the supplies they need for a raging time on the river at Sierra Outdoor Center in Auburn. Novice and experienced riders alike can get first-class guided rides from the pros at Sierra Whitewater and Tributary Whitewater Tours. Some of the highest water levels in 25 years, means that this year having a pro along is all the more important. We have some of the best

10. Have fun with history

Its not very often when an event takes in a whole county, with multiple venues, appeals to families as well as singles, and doesnt cost a dime. The Heritage Trail offers that experience in the form of a tour of 19 area museums Aug. 6 and 7 and features activities ranging from Indian games and crafts and sack races to gold panning, granite splitting demonstrations and historic town tours. Karen Mattson, Placer County Museums Division curator of education, says the tour is a terrific opportunity to invite friends to tour county museums. People really have the opportunity to see Placer County up close and learn about history in fun, hands-on ways, Mattson said. I call this the family mustdo event of the summer. continued from 6 rivers for whitewater rafting literally in the world, said Sierra Outdoor Center Owner Guy Cables. People come from all over the world to ride them. We talk about being the Endurance Capital and this is one natural resource we have. To celebrate the pristine river terrain, various businesses and non-profit organizations are hosting the Auburn River Festival July 810. It will feature competitions, vendors, camping and more. Whether cruising down Salmon Falls or riding the bull through Satans Cesspool, river goers are sure to have a

wet, wild and safe time.

11. MAKE SOME MUSIC

OK, so its summer time. School is out and youre combing the recreation guides looking for something to sign junior up for. You know if you dont itll be an

entire summer of overtaxed thumb muscles from the DS, resulting in eyes resembling blood shot pinwheels. Let me suggest encouraging her to pick up a musical instrument. Of all the hobbies that you might point your kids toward this summer, playing an instrument is one that might actually stick with them until theyre old and gray and have kids of their own. The Auburn Symphony has long promoted the benefits of early exposure to music through its robust outreach programs like Kinderkonzert and Symphony Goes to School. Scientific research has shown that early exposure to music

directly benefits a childs brain development and learning skills, commonly referred to as the Mozart Effect. But, in fact, learning to play an instrument is not just for the young. Auburn Symphony violinist Dottie Ferguson says playing music can be inspiring. Learning to play an instrument gives me one more thing to be passionate about, Ferguson said. And since its summer and the camping season is upon us, let me point out more added benefit: Isnt the most popular person on any camping trip the guy who brought the guitar? Nothing says

12. Explore the canyon

Lucky. Thats the feeling urban folk get when they step into the American River canyon to enjoy its wild wonders. A river runs through the Auburn-area lifestyle courtesy of the middle and north forks of the American River that converge at the confluence in the canyon just below Auburn. From there, the recreational options are limitless from kayaking and whitewater rafting to hiking, running, biking and trail riding. The canyon is a year-round wonderland that, according to state Parks and Recreation Department statistics, annually attracts a million visitors. The Auburn State Recreation Area, 25,000 acres overseen by the Parks Department, is a stepping off point for fun

Eric Peach, left, and Tony DeRiggi hike past a rapid known to rafters and kayakers as the J-Turn rapid. The rapid can been seen from the Clementine Loop trail along the Middle Fork of the American River.

13. HIT THE TRAILS

As the Endurance Capital of the World, Auburn offers some of the most beautiful and extensive trails around. Soak up some fresh air, connect with other hiking enthusiasts and enjoy the best of what the Auburn State Recreation Area has to offer take a hike! Terry Cook, who volunteers for the Auburn State Recreation Area Canyon Keepers, said the Lake Clementine Trail is one of her favorites, while the Quarry Trail is great for beginners. Within minutes of Auburn you can feel like you are miles from civilization, Cook said. The obvious answer why people should get out and hike would be for the fun, nature and exercise. However, I know for myself and many others it goes way deeper

and adventure. Eric Peach, a board member with the Auburn-based Protect American River Canyons, said that what amazes him about the canyon experience is the surprise factor. When you seem to have all the birds and plants identified, something new pops up, Peach said. Peach suggests bringing along a pocket magnifying lens, a field guide on flora and fauna and a set of binoculars to take in the canyon. They can really increase your appreciation for this startlingly remarkable world about us, Peach said. There are all these different layers to experience if you open yourself up to them.

14. Take in the theater

Rehearsals are under way for the Placer Community Theaters upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the State Theater in Auburn. Set to hit the stage Aug. 5-14, this popular musical tells the story of Joseph favorite son of Jacob who is sold into slavery by his 11 jealous brothers. Sound familiar? Lets just say its based on a best-seller of Biblical proportions. You dont have to be a religious person to enjoy this show, said director Amy Linden. Its not preachy or didactic in any way. It tells a biblical story, but does so with a lot of humor. The show features a wide array of musical styles western, calypso, rock and roll including a Pharaoh who channels Elvis. Its a very difficult show to produce. The music is very complex. But we have incredible talent here locally, and they produce amazing harmonies, Linden

said. Since it is an operetta, there is no spoken dialogue, and for the actors that means a lot of pantomime and fun. Its a fun show for all ages, the kind that can bring families together. Theres tons of fun and lots of laughs. Definitely colorful, Linden said.

socialize while allowing their young ones the ability to take part in some of the fun activities. The idea is to provide an opportunity to invite folks to come out to a wonderful park setting and hear some wonderful live music and eat some great food, said Kahl Muscott, district administrator for the Auburn Recreation District, the event organizer. And at the same time have things for the kids to do so its a family event. Another big plus? Its free to attend, although you are on your own for food and drink. This year the show will get

rolling around 5:30 p.m. at Regional Park and will feature two bands Mumbo Gumbo and Great American Taxi. There will be food vendors, a beer garden and a kid zone. This year were bringing back Mumbo Gumbo (for their fifth appearance). Great American Taxi, its the first time for them, theyre based out of Colorado, Muscott said. They do national tours and are great fun, kind of a party band. For more information, call (530) 885-8461 or go online to www.partyinthepark.net.

18. Go see growth

Looking for a fun family or group activity? From farm stands to farm tours and special events, youll find dozens of farm visit options available in Placer County. Some farms invite visitors during certain seasons or hours, and others ask that you make an appointment before visiting. Click the Visit a Farm button at PlacerGROWN.org for a list of farms that invite visitors. Farm stands offer the opportunity to buy direct from the farmer, and in some cases to pick your own fruit or produce. From 5 to 9 p.m. take a trip down memory lane as more than 300 classic cars and trucks, pre-1972, line the street. The event is free to the public and classic car and truck owners. 21. HIT THE LINKS

If youre looking for a change of scenery and a new challenge on the golf course, consider breaking out the sticks in Auburn. With more than a half dozen courses throughout the Auburn area, theres plenty of options to fit your game, from 9-hole facilities to championship 18-hole layouts. We always say its not a flat-land golf course, said The Ridges head golf professional, Shawn Kelly. You get

the beautiful hills, and were very tree lined a very gold country type of setting. There are a number of golf courses up here us, DarkHorse, Auburn Country Club, Winchester Country Club. Other options are Black Oak Golf Course and Raspberry Hill Golf Course.

22. TOAST THE TOWN

If your screensaver has you dreaming of Mai Tais in Mexico or stout in a London pub, a mid-week happy hour may be just what the doctor ordered. Its also a great way to get your getaway fix without breaking the bank. With food and drinks often sold at a fraction of the normal cost,

hitting a local spot for happy hour can be the ultimate economical mid-week diversion. Ty Rowe of Bootleggers Old Town Tavern and Grill is among Auburn-area restaurateurs who think you should hit the town with a group of co-workers or meet friends for a mid-week pow-wow. I get happy hour from when I lived in Europe, Rowe said. Everyone would go have a quick beer before going home and dealing with family things.

The citys Shop Auburn First campaign highlights the many goods and services available locally. One of the leaders of that campaign is Liz Briggs, coowner of Downtowns Auburn Drug Co. Auburn is a great place to shop, according to Briggs. And she can list dozens of reasons for buying local. Its because were all small businesses and we help support our local community, she said. Become someone else for a day by donning a fun or historical costume. Dress up as an Egyptian or clothe yourself in garb that will transport you back in time to the Renaissance. Nancy Sadler has owned Mad Hatters, a costume shop in Downtown Auburn for 28 years and counting. My favorite thing is dressing up kids that are doing a report on a historical character and I dress them like the character, Sadler said. I enjoy history and theyre learning something. 25. EXPERIENCE THE GOLD RUSH

Described as the most historic site in California, Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park marks the spot where James W. Marshall

found gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River. This led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere. The Golden State was born, fortunes were made, lives lost and California forever changed. Visitors see a replica of the original sawmill where history was made and over 20 picturesque buildings including a house, school, store and mining enterprise. Bring your own pans or buy one on site and try your hand at panning for gold. I just had a lady in here who said she was going to give her dad a gold-panning session for his 80th birthday,

said Norm Allen, volunteer docent. There are kids 4 and 5 years old panning right now. Its a place not only of history but of hikes and picnics in the oak woodlands. The park is located in Coloma on Highway 49 between Placerville and Auburn.

We also have books on CD they can listen to on their family vacations in the car. We have DVDs for all age groups. We also have a new feature at the library: we have e-books and downloadable books. The park has a large, fenced play area for dogs, as well as a splash pond. A canopied area provides shade for caretakers as they watch dogs play. 29. ALL EYES OUT FOR ANTIQUES

Over its 44 years, Old Towns Antiques and Collectibles Street Fair is a twice-yearly must-do for many collectors and browsers. Linda Robinson, president of the Old Town Business Association, spearheads the planning for the fairs. We have a spring and fall fair, she said. Its always the third Sunday of May and

October. Many of those vendors have been participating in the show for 20 to 25 years. The fair concentrates on collectibles and good used junk, Robinson said. We pride ourselves on keeping it as pure as we can and we dont allow arts and crafts. The vendors really appreciate that. In good weather, 4,000 to 5,000 visitors make their way to Old Town to search for treasures. Its almost a phenomenon about the shopping, Robinson said. The old-time vendors know they can start setting up in the middle of the night. As soon as they realize there are spaces open, theyll sneak into town and start to set up. Then theyll take a flashlight

and shop at other vendor booths and then sell the stuff with theirs. Robinson enjoys perusing, too. I was raised around antiques because my grandmother had an antique shop, she said. I kind of like the shabby chic. Im always looking for garden art. Theres such an incredible variety of items to choose from from 50 years to 100 years ago. It is an outdoor event. When the weather is nice, folks do a lot of socializing. There are also food vendors. The shows run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, see www.oldtownauburnca.com.

Many of the worlds best cyclists hit the streets of Auburn earlier this year for Stage 3 of the Amgen Tour of California. Those same roads are perfect for recreational cyclists, if theyre up for the challenge. The steep hills and sharp turns on the streets and roads in and around Auburn can make for a tough spin, for riders of all levels. The quiet country roads south of Auburn have become popular with cyclists on weekend rides. AuburnFolsom Road, Mt. Vernon Road and Wise Road are all popular routes that offer beautiful scenery and hilly rides. For experienced cyclists

looking for the ultimate test, visit Mosquito Ridge Road, between Foresthill and Colfax. The winding road dips down into the American Canyon and goes back up in a hurry. Several groups in Auburn offer regular rides that anyone can get it on. The Sierra Foothills Cycling Club has rides each Tuesday, both morning and evening throughout the summer. The club also has Wednesday morning rides and frequent weekend rides. Check out www.sfcyclists.org for more information.

No matter how many digits are involved in the square

footage of your living quarters, chances are theres something atop or under the roof youd like to tweak. And whether the items on your homes to-do list are there out of necessity or something a little less mandatory, you can expect to connect with local professionals at the Auburn Home Show. The Auburn Home Show takes place twice a year, in the spring and fall, at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. The show boasts more than 1,000 exhibits and an average three-day attendance of 25,000 people, said Lani Johnston Horan, Auburn Home Show producer. They find something they never knew they couldnt live without, she said. Horan said the spring show

is one of the biggest in Northern California, and the fall show is the biggest fall show in Northern California. The next Auburn Home Show takes place Sept. 23-25, 2011. Call (530) 887-3616 or see auburnhomeshows.com to learn more.

Each Friday, dozens of riders mount up on powerful bikes that only turn left and have no brakes at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. The regular program includes several featured events, including the sidecar series, a challenge elimination series, motocross jumpers and the annual North vs. South battle. Veteran Billy Janniro will be defending his national championship this summer. The former British League rider also won the track championship in 2010.
