System Windows Vista Business, Premium, and Ultimate with Adobe Acrobat Professional 8. Problem I can not disable Adobe Acrobat Updater. Solution You have to stop "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdater.exe" from running. Deletion won't help as adobe will create a new folder and file. Here is how it works:

1. First, start your task manager and kill the "AdobeUpdater.exe" process. 2. Right click the new file "AdobeUpdater.exe", select "Properties", then "Security".
Mark at "Group or user names" "System", press "Edit" and click on all "Deny" checkboxes.

3. Now do this for all users "Administrator" etc. and press ok.
All done. Adobe will never again be able to update. You can test it by trying to start the update within Adobe Acrobat manually. You will see, that nothing will happen.

YOUR FEEDBACK Thanks, that helped Problem is still unsolved. Name Comment

Disable or stop Adobe Updater

Comments Annoyed, 28:03:2010 04:27:49 You can also try blocking this with your antivirus/firewall :) This has twice cost me nearly half of our monthly bandwidth! In about 1 week :( The first time I only noticed this after it had already downloaded about 400MB and I thought selecting the "Stop downloading and cancel all downloads" option would prevent this, but it happened again. We cannot afford their nearly unstoppable 1.1GB automatic updates :( There doesn't seem to be any options for cancelling (or even changing download preferences for) automatic updates in applications. Not user-friendly and *unbelievably inconsiderate* of them. Apparently there's a customization wizard for IT admins to deal with this (I think) but why should I download and install even more stuff from them when my antivirus (or your method) can block their huge automatic updates in a few mouse-clicks? I've now blocked every Adobe process I can find and also disabled the Adobe startup entries. Thanks for the useful post and comments :):):) Mahesh, 14:03:2010 18:11:35 Cool, thnx Michael, 06:02:2010 11:02:10: Thanks. That helped alot. I also stopped the irritating Adobeinfo.exe from running by renaming it from a .exe to .exo AdobeInfo was always left running after opening a pdf and it sucked up 25megs of RAM for nothing. You can find it here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat Acrobat starts up much faster now too. Jim, 28:01:2010 17:33:06: can this be done with XP? I'm ready to get rid of everything Microsoft!!! Randah, 25:01:2010 23:13:59 I still get the pop-up =( Matt Sainsbury, 10:01:2010 12:43:15: @moonscape , it should work fine in Windows XP, if the boxes are grayed out, just click "advanced", then uncheck "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects....", and then if another dialog appears, select "copy". They should know be enabled SAGirl, 21:11:2009 11:10:17: At last! To solve on XP, 15:04:2009 16:50:51, says: Delete the directories: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater(version number) C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater(version number) Problem solved. Thanks for the paths, helped me find the blighter. RyGuy, 05:02:2009 16:13:38, says: Thanks, this method worked perfectly for both Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Standard in XP Pro sp2. moonscape, 31:01:2009 22:59:40, says:
