ABSTRACT

In this proposed project, we have put in efforts to design, fabricate and evaluate a microstrip patch antenna to operate in the S-band. At S-band, this antenna has relatively good electrical properties like less return loss, high gain etc. with immunity to environmental parameters like mist & rain. These characteristics make this antenna an effective communication antenna on missiles. Using a 3D electromagnetic high frequency structure simulator (HFSS), the microstrip patch antenna was designed and simulated to meet the functional requirements. The enhancing bandwidth and size reduction mechanism that improves the performance of a conventional microstrip patch antenna on a relatively thin substrate oh height 0.079mm, is presented in this project. The design adopts contemporary techniques; microstrip feedline feeding, with dielectric material as RT duroid dielectric constant r =2.2,. The composite effect of integrating these techniques on patch offer a low profile, broadband, high gain, and compact antenna element. The simulated shows good return loss lesser than -10 dB over a bandwidth of 0.5 GHz over the operating frequency. The proposed patch has a compact dimension of radius 23.077 mm. This gives the reduction in size by 30-40% as compared to conventional microstrip patch antenna. The design is suitable for array applications with respect to a given frequency of 3.0 GHz3.5GHz. The measured results were very close to the simulated results.
