THE 23rd INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS DAY - 5th DECEMBER 2007


Sponsored by the Proclamation of the United Nations the International Volunteers Day is globally observed on

5th December by the governments and the people to befittingly honor the millions of the highly committed self-less Volunteers rendering multifarious essential services to their fellow-men. Text of United Nations Proclamation - 1985
(International Volunteers Day for Economic and Social Development)

invites Governments to observe annually on 5th December an International Volunteers Day on Social Development and urge them to take measures to heighten awareness of the important contributions of Voluntary Service, thereby stimulating
more people in all walks of life to offer their services as volunteers at home and abroad.

Annual Observance of the International Volunteers Day in Karachi


Inspired by the U.N. Proclamation, a highly-spirited team of prominent social workers initiated the observance of this important DAY - formally launched on 5.12.1998 by the then Governor of Sindh, Lt.Gen. Moinuddin Haider.

Mission Statement of the International Volunteers Day Organizing Committee, Karachi * To promote profound Volunteerism ,especially amongst the educated youth and the upcoming generations. * To move the Government for maximum encouragement to the Volunteers and their active groups. * To highlight the meritorious services of the well-select Volunteers and Philanthropists of the Year and
present them the Shields of Honor on the Annual International Volunteers Day. * To further highlight the valuable contributions of the illustrious Volunteers - both the past and the present, through befitting public forums and publications, including the Whos Who of Volunteers In Sindh. * To create and motivate the establishment of benevolent Funds / Foundations for providing essential services to the retired and aged Volunteers in acute distress and need.

International Volunteers Day Shields for Meritorious Performance - 1988 - 2006


To-date, 141 Volunteers most of them the Senior Citizens of Sindh are the recipients of the Shields of Honour for their acclaimed public services and leadership in the promotion of essential social causes. With almost life-time devotional services mainly in the NGO sector, the Shield-holders include: 37 Businessmen; 47 Ladies;15 belong to the Minorities; 35 Professionals; 17 from the interior Districts and 16 from the Under-developed areas of Karachi.

Whos Who of Volunteers in Sindh


Launched in 2002, this unique annual publication lists the distinguished services of the aforesaid Shield-holders. Also, well high-lighted are the noble contributions of over 250 Ever-shining Luminaries of Dedicated Volunteerism headed by Amin-ul-Mulk, Nawab Mir Mohd. Masoom Shah Bakhari (16th Century) and Mai Khairun (19th Century).

This annually up-dated and well-illustrated Trend-setter Directory of historical importance is the only one of its kind in Pakistan. The Urdu version of its 4th edition entitled Samaj kay Darkhshan Sitaray appeared on 5. 12. 2005.
