Chapter 1 Product Description

Introduction
This manual contains information and procedures for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the Power Distribution Unit (PDU) Lite.

Scope of Manual
This manual is intended for use by service technicians familiar with similar types of equipment. No attempt is made to thoroughly discuss all aspects of the system or application design. It contains service information required for the equipment described and is current as of the printing date. Changes which occur after the printing date may be incorporated by a complete manual revision or, alternatively, as additions. This manual is organized into the following chapters: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Product Description Controls, Indicators and Connections Installation Maintenance Specifications

Safety
It is necessary that all personnel involved in the installation, operation or service of units included in a Powerwave system understand, are aware of and follow these points: Units supplied from the mains must be connected to grounded outlets and conform to local regulations. Power supply units supplied from the mains contain dangerous voltage that can cause electric shock. Disconnect the mains prior to any work in these units. Local regulations are to be followed when servicing these units. All RF transmitting units generate radio signals and thereby give rise to electromagnetic fields that may be hazardous to the health of any person who is in close proximity to an antenna.

Overview
A PDU, as illustrated in Figure 1-1, supplies Tower Mounted Amplifiers (TMAs) with DC power and generates alarm signals in the event of an amplifier or power supply failure. DC power is taken from the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and converted through DC/DC converters in the PDU to 12 VDC before being provided to the TMAs. The PDU connects to the TMAs via Current Injectors (CINs), also known as Bias-T. Due to its extremely small size, a PDU Lite module easily fits in a shelter or cabinet. Its application is further simplified by its wide range of input voltages which may vary between -19.5 V and -60 V or 044-05289 Rev A 1-1

between +19.5 V and +60 V. The module automatically adapts to the input polarity and voltage. No manual operations are needed.

PDU Lite
The PDU Lite module supplies two TMAs with 12 VDC power and can be used as a stand alone PDU if only two TMAs are installed, for example, at an omni site. The modularity of the PDU Lite product line facilitates a rapid and problem-free expansion using one or two PDU Lite modules or a unit that serves a full three-sector, receive diversity site.

Chapter 2 Controls, Indicators and Connections

Introduction
This chapter identifies and describes the controls, indicators and connections of the PDU Lite system.

LED Indicators
Each PDU lite module has three green status LEDs, described in Table 2-1 and illustrated in Figure 2-1. The LEDs are numbered 1 thru 3 from left to right. Table 2-1 PDU LED Indicators Indicator 1 Description Displays DC status Notes ON= DC input voltage correct, DC/DC converter working normally, no short circuits in DC output loops OFF= Fault 2 3 Displays power status at VOUT A Displays power status at VOUT B ON = Output levels are within required limits OFF = Fault ON = Output levels are within required limits OFF = Fault

Alarm Port
The alarm relay changes to a non-alarm state within 17 seconds of DC power being supplied to the PDU, provided that there are no faults. See LED indicators for details on fault displays. TMA faults (deviations in current supply) have a delay of 30 seconds prior to the display of an alarm to prevent unnecessary alarms caused by temporary changes in the current output. All other faults are registered immediately. All alarms take 17 seconds to clear after the cause of the alarm is removed. The alarm output does not distinguish between major faults and minor faults, but, a slowly flashing LED light corresponds to a minor alarm, and a LED that is OFF corresponds to a major alarm (or a DC Supply failure).

Single PDU Lite Module

DC input cable and internal connection The PDU Lite module is supplied with DC power from the BTS via a DC input cable having a Molex connector on the PDU end. The BTS connector type and cable length are specified by the customer. The first DC input stage of the PDU Lite module, illustrated in Figure 2-3, is a polarity independent circuit.

Controls, Indicators and Connections

DC output cables The DC output cables have a Molex connector on the PDU end. At the CIN end there is an SMB connector (indoor CIN) or SMA connector (outdoor CIN). The CIN connector type and the DC output cable lengths are specified by the customer. Alarm output cable The BTS is connected to the PDU Lite module via an alarm output cable. This cable has a Molex connector on the PDU end, and generally, conductors with bare ends on the BTS end. The relay is activated if there is no alarm and normal operating conditions. Under these conditions the contact path between (2) and (3) is closed, and the path between (1) and (3) is open. This is always valid for each individual PDU Lite module.

Figure 2-4 Alarm Output Circuit

Daisy-chaining Multiple PDU Lite Modules

Daisy-chain cables are delivered factory mounted when a panel with two or three PDU Lite modules has been ordered. For the sake of simplicity Figure 2-5 only shows a panel with three modules DC input daisy chain cable The DC input daisy-chain cable has 4 Molex connectors as illustrated in Figure 2-5. Three of the Molex connectors are connected to the DC input ports (marked VIN on the panel front) of the PDU Lite modules, which will be connected in parallel. If only two modules are used, the DC input daisy-chain cable will have protective plugs on the unused connectors. The remaining fourth connector is of the same type as the DC input connectors of the PDU Lite modules. It is used for connecting the DC input cable from the BTS, so it is not necessary to replace the cable if additional modules are added or modules are replaced.

DC output cables The DC output cables are the same type used for a single PDU Lite module. The CIN connector type and cable length are be specified by the customer. Alarm output daisy-chain cable and alarm cable connections The alarm output daisy-chain cable is the same as the DC input cable, but has red sleeves. Three of the Molex connectors can be connected to the alarm output ports (marked ALARM on the panel front) of the PDU Lite modules. If only two modules are used, illustrated in Figure 2-6, the Molex connector for the third module will have a red terminating plug with a jumper. This terminating plug must not be removed if only two modules are used. The remaining connector is of the same type as the alarm output connectors of the modules. It is used for connecting the alarm output cable going to the BTS, so it is not necessary to replace the cable if additional modules are added or modules are replaced.

Figure 2-6 Internal Connections of the Alarm Output Daisy-chain Cable Figure 2-6 illustrates the alarm output: (a) Physical connections (b) Simplified connection diagram (c) Physical connections for a unit with only two PDU Lite modules and a terminating plug. The contact path between contacts 2 and 3 in the output alarm connectors is closed if, and only if, the alarm relays in all three modules are activated (no alarm), which also results in an open path between contacts 1 and 3. NOTE A correct alarm output will not be given if the alarm output daisy-chain cable is left with any of the module connectors free, in other words, with only two PDU Lite modules mounted on a mounting panel without a terminating connector.

NOTE

If only one PDU Lite module is mounted on the panel, use a single cable with a Molex connector.

Chapter 3 Installation

Introduction
This chapter contains unpacking, inspection, and installation instructions for installing the PDU Lite system.

Site Survey
Powerwave recommends that a site survey be performed prior to equipment ordering or installation. Performing a detailed site survey reduces or eliminates installation and turn-up delays. Pay particular attention to power plant capacity, cooling needs, floor space, and RF/DC cabling/breaker requirements. PDU Lite specifications are listed in Chapter 5.

Unpacking and Inspection

This equipment has been operated, tested, and calibrated at the factory. Carefully open containers to remove equipment. Retain all packing material that can be reassembled in the event unit must be returned to the factory. Perform the following steps: Visually inspect equipment for damage that may have occurred during shipment. If possible, in the presence of the delivery person. Check for evidence of water damage, bent or warped chassis, loose screws or nuts, or extraneous packing material in connectors.

If equipment is damaged, file a claim with the carrier once the extent of any damage is assessed. If equipment must be returned to factory, please contact factory for a Return Material Authorization (RMA). See Chapter 4.

PDU/TMA connection patterns

Specific PDU modules are not required to connect with a specific CIN/TMA, the distribution of the connections and cables is left to the installation crew. However, it is important to ensure that the cabling follows a consistent and understandable pattern to make troubleshooting and repairs easier. One possibility is shown in Figure 3-1. If three PDU Lite modules are serving a full three-sector receive diversity site, one possibility is to connect a PDU Lite module to one RF cable for each of two antennas in different sectors. Should a PDU Lite module fail for any reason, both sectors would still be able to function, but at a diminished efficiency, due to their connection with a second DC supply.
