EDITORS DESK

Welcome to our first issue!

I
know what youre thinking. What the heck?! This girl must be absolutely CRAZY for taking on yet another project! Sometimes I wonder if I am. Crazy, that is. But the fact that I surround myself with crazy people makes my craziness seem questionable. You know what they say, Surround yourself with crazy people, and you become the normal one in the group. That is a saying, right? Or did I just copy that from the voices in my head? Umm, I mean Ahem, never mind. When I told people my idea, many of them asked me if I was nuts. Balancing my school life, family life, social life, and internet life is already hard enough, and Im adding another variable into the equation? Now that I think about it, I probably am nuts. And besides, I already run the SNC FanChat podcast. Adding a fan magazine on my already-full plate might just be the thing to tip the scales. But you know how these things are. When you get an idea, you just want to throw yourself into it; you treat your brainchild like an actual child, nurturing it, protecting it, helping it grow. But, you may be asking, why an online magazine? What makes it different from the podcast, besides the fact that ones printed and one is audio? Well (she says as she pushes her glasses up her nose), its quite simple. Whereas the podcast is a window into the world of Straight No Chaser, this magazine hopefully will facilitate interaction amongst fans. In other words, THIS IS YOUR PUBLICATION, CHASERS!!! It literally will not exist without you. We want YOU to send in articles, submissions, columns, ANYTHING! This isnt my magazine, it isnt the SNC Quarter Note Editors magazine, and it isnt Straight No Chasers magazine. Its your magazine, Chasers, and the quality of its content will depend on what you submit! And judging by what Ive read on Facebook, Twitter, and SNCmusic.com, Im certain that itll all be high-quality content, because Chasers only give and demand the best. 4 SNC QUARTER NOTES SUMMER 2011 Did you go see one of their concerts? Send us a trip report and concert review! Got some sweet photos to share? Send them on over! Do you want to share how you discovered SNC and how theyve inspired you? Send us an email! Need tips on antagonizing? Kim will be thrilled to help you out! (*giggles*) Do you want to ask #blameCarla for advice? I dont know why you would, but go ahead! (Im kidding, of course! Love you, Carla!) The main reason I wanted to make this magazine is so that we as a Chaser community can grow closer together and interact more. There are so many of us and yet, were all spread out over different websites. Not everyone is on Twitter, Facebook, SNCmusic.com Or else, some of us are too busy and cant check these sites as often as wed like (*raises hand* Im guilty of this). Think of this as a sort of a seasonal digest, a whats happening in Chaserland. If you want to be more than just an occasional contributor, please let us know! We're looking for plenty of enthusiastic Chasers to join our writing team! And who knows? If we have enough people interested, we might move from making this a quarterly publication to a bi-monthly or even monthly publication! I hope you enjoy this first issue of SNC Quarter Notes! (*raises glass of apple cider for a toast*) Heres to the growth of this amazing Chaser community! Cheers!

Meet the Editors

Meet the crazy Chasers behind this issue of SNC Quarter Notes!
Jana Barnes
(Graphic Designer) My name is Jana Barnes and Im the director of a small public library in central Indiana. Unlike many SNC fans, Im not a singer myself. I was one of those high school choir students who had far more enthusiasm than talent. I could learn the choreography and sell it, just dont ask me to sing a solo or harmonize. Perhaps that is one of the reasons Im so fascinated with Straight No Chaser. Im mesmerized by people who DO have those talents. My introduction to SNC came quite by accident when I stumbled across the 12 Days video on Yahoo in 2008. Being a life-long Hoosier (resident of Indiana, not IU affiliated) myself, I was happy to discover the Indiana connection. I bought the Holiday Spirits CD and gifted it to a friend who had been a big fan of another a cappella group when we were in college. I followed the info on their website and learned they would be doing a concert at the Murat in Indy in December of 2009 and I knew I HAD to go. I made my a cappella-loving friend go with me. I turned to her at intermission and declared This is the best $28 Ive ever spent! We both walked out that night with huge smiles on our faces that just wouldnt go away! I was hooked. Over the next year, I went to six more SNC concerts and obviously plan to go to many, many more in the future. I honed my Photoshopping skills (such as they are) in another online fandom several years ago. Ive been a part of several online fandoms over the years, but I have to say Chasers are among the nicest group Ive ever met online. Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this project.

Kim Davis
(Fun Editor) Hi Chasers!! The Antagonizer here! Also known as klancy96 or sometimes Kim. (I'm not sure how I got tagged as 'The Antagonizer' but I assure you, it is not an accurate nickname! I am an angel and the only non-crazy person on this staff of ten editors, but let's keep that between us ;) There's no real easy answer, or at least an answer in the space allotted here, to describe how I discovered Straight No Chaser, but I will say through the music of SNC, I began to discover life again and open doors that I thought I'd shut years ago. Now my life is enriched by awesome music, fantastic friends, and immeasurable laughs! When I'm not working as a Customer Service Manager in MD, I'm hanging out at home in PA with my lovable, laughable 10 yr old Chocolate lab Tonka and can often be found breaking glass! (Don't worry, I'm a stained glass artist; I'm not just wandering the streets randomly breaking windows ;) And, now, I get to spend some of my spare time working with fellow Chasers to bring you the SNC Quarter Notes!! I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sara Dowling
(Fun Editor) Hi, Chasers! I'm very excited to be a part of this new project! I'm Sara, an avid West Coast Chaser from the middle of nowhere in Nevada. I feel like I became an instant SNC fan on November 29th, 2009 somewhere around 9pm, when I saw their Live In New York - Holiday Edition on PBS. I haven't actually made it to a show yet, something I intend to fix this December! I am extremely grateful that SNC allows and encourages photos, videos and reports from their shows, and also for the Chasers who post them! I love it all, and I would have missed SO much fun without that blessing! Thank you! My favorite SNC song is *mumblefritz* and my favorite member of SNC is *mumblefritz*. Previously, I coordinated #NUBW and #BEEPweek - stay tuned later this summer for tenors week! Contrary to popular belief, I don't actually live on Twitter (@wtrfallprincess), but I may or may not have started and continue to track the #SNCTwitterWars. I am also a Christian, aspiring YA author, chocoholic, small town girl and a cat person. Sometimes I blog at www.waterfallprincess.com/. SNCQUARTERNOTES.BLOGSPOT.COM 5

Shaina Eng
(News Editor) Hi Chasers! I'm Shaina, and live in the sunny, beautiful Los Angeles, California! I became a fan of Straight No Chaser after seeing them live for the first time in December 2008. Before that, I had just been a "casual" listener and viewer; I'd seen their video of "The 12 Days of Christmas" on YouTube late in 2007, along with several million others! Before SNC, I had always loved a cappella music, but I hadn't really known about the more contemporary a cappella out there; my idea of a cappella was mainly barbershop and doo wop (which I still loved, by the way). But after that fateful night in 2008, I became a die-hard Chaser, and I have been ever since! I'm willing to bet that some of you (okay, a lot of you) think I'm crazy for taking on another creative project, but to be honest, I'm super excited about this magazine! And, I couldn't ask for a better group of people to help me out with it--the Chaser community is filled with some of the best people around! I'm so excited to see this project take shape, and I'm even more excited just thinking about how it'll grow in the future! Thanks in advance to all of you who will be reading and contributing to this little grassroots magazine; it's you who make this magazine what it is and what it can be!

SJ Fosnaught
(A Cappella Editor) Hey Chaseatopia! My name is Sarah Jane, but you can call me S.J. Im originally from Virginia Beach, but I currently reside in (none other than The Natural State itself) Arkansas! (GO RAZORBACKS!) I love being creative; Im always thinking of some random project (whether it be writing, photography, or something to do with music) to work onand a lot of the time, its somehow a cappella related. Ive been a fan of vocal music for quite some time, but I never knew about the contemporary a cappella scene until Straight No Chaser. I first found out about them while looking randomly through YouTube videos two years ago. Of course, like 13 million other people, I loved the 12 Days video but as I looked through some of their other songs, I realized just how awesome their voices and arrangements really were. The more videos I saw of the group, the more I knew I had to see them live! Ive been a bonafide Chaser ever since. Im VERY excited to get this magazine off the ground, and couldnt be working with a more dedicated group of talent! Its been an amazing experience watching it come together, and from the 10 of us, Ill say in advance: Thank you for everything you all do as fans to support the guys, as well as fan projects like this. We hope we can just give a little back to whats become such a great fan-munity. I hope you all enjoy, and cant wait to hear what you all think about it! CHEERS!

Tara Kellerman
(Fan Zone Editor) Hey there Chaserville!!! :) My name is Tara Kellerman and 'I'm from Indiana'!!! (< Just kidding, just can't help but think of Charlie's intro after typing 'I'm from'.) Anyway, I'm from good ol New Jersey! Home to musical greats like Jon, Bruce, Frank (and summer home to the guys of Straight No Chaser!). I was 'shipped' here from South Korea when I was just 4 months old and have been happy to call NJ my home since then. I can't tell you squat about being Korean, since my family is Italian! :) This year marks my eleventh year teaching 5th grade. Most days I feel like I LIVE at school as I take on too many projects, volunteer for too many committees, and keep in touch with many, many of my former students which often involves going to basketball, baseball, softball, football, soccer games, as well as recitals, concerts, awards ceremonies, etc. However, when I'm not doing school-related things you can find me scrapbooking, traveling (if and when I can afford it), laughing my face off with Marna Lampe, oh, and seeing Straight No Chaser! 6 SNC QUARTER NOTES SUMMER 2011

I was introduced to SNC via XM radio while driving. 'The 12 Days of Christmas' came on and it got my attention from the start! I was laughing out loud alone in my car and knew I was hooked and needed more. I saw the name of the band, 'Straight No Chaser' and texted it (yes, I know, v. bad habit) to myself so I could look them up as soon as I got home. When I arrived home, lo and behold, this 'Straight No Chaser' group WAS ON TV!!! I immediately began to text and call my friends and got them hooked, too!!! My first live show in Collingswood, NJ was the beginning of this crazy journey into Chaserville!!! For any of you who were in attendance there, let's just say, the guys are masters of going with the flow and giving their audience the best possible performance, regardless of 'technical difficulties'. They are true professionals. I was BESIDE myself when they announced they would be doing a residency in Atlantic City!!! What luck!!! The Meet and Greet sealed the deal to my newfound move into SNCland! The rest is history! I am SO thankful for the many wonderful friends that SNC has brought into my life! Thank you for reading our 'Quarter Notes'! I hope you enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed working on it! :)

Annie LaDuca
(Features Editor) Hello Chasers! Im Annie LaDuca and I live in Fairfax, Virginia (Note: Im a native-NYer and will always default to a NY-state of mind). I work as an environmental consultant, supporting water quality protection efforts. I play as a big kid (on sports fields, courts, and playgrounds), love my family incredibly, and am constantly amazed at the effect music can have on someone. I first heard SNC during the holiday season in 2009; I was in Borders Bookstore looking for new holiday music, and loving a cappella, saw their Christmas Cheers CD and behind it Holiday Spirits. Never having heard any of their music, I knew Id love those two CDs-and I did! My first concert was in Washington, DC in April, 2010 and Ive been an active fan ever since. Ive made many incredible friends through my love for SNC; Im thankful to remain close friends with a great group of people and always look forward to meeting more Chasers and meeting fans new to the Chaser Community. I hope you enjoy reading the Quarter Notes!

Marna Lampe
(Features Editor) Hello, fellow Chasers. My name is Marna. I am now living back in my hometown, Pitman, in southern New Jersey. My husband, Brian, and I bought an old fixer-upper here a few years ago and weve enjoyed working on the house. We live here with our four spoiled house rabbits that have their own room. Pitman is very much small town America with a cute little downtown area. People here know their neighbors, and we love our small town traditions like the upcoming Fourth of July Parade. By time our first issue is released in late June, folks will probably have their chairs already lined up along Broadway, staking their claim for all of the parade-watching glory! Yes, people put chairs out along the side of the road days in advance. Im not kidding ask Tara. Speaking of Tara, weve been friends for years. We met through work, and the silliness began. We went to our first SNC concert together in Collingswood last spring and promptly bought tickets to see the Atlantic City show in July. We enjoyed the AC show so much that we bought another set of tickets, and then another, and well Lets just say living in South Jersey has its advantages, and we can hop in the car and drive down the shore to get our SNC fix! Oh, I mean to do more research for this magazine. Yes, thats itresearch. Im hoping to catch up with many of you Chasers (research assistants) at a show this summer. It has been fantastic getting to know so many great people through our Chaser network. You all rule! SNCQUARTERNOTES.BLOGSPOT.COM 7

(Fan Zone Editor) Hello Chaserazzi! Well, along with all the fine Bios you have read, scanned, skipped, or ignored above, I also would like to welcome you to our little missive we are putting together. To get through the requisite info to be considered an introduction, heres a little about me. I am originally from California but have lived in many places. Currently I am settled into Dearborn, MI. (Hi Seggie!) I first heard of SNC by seeing the 12 Days video on YouTube and after a friend bought/found the Live at the Mac DVD, I also got one and infected everyone I know with it. I was surprised and totally thrilled to hear they were getting back together and have continued to be so successful. Meeting them has been more than I could hope for and I continue to be a loyal Chaser fan. I like to travel and have seen SNC on both coasts and a number of shows in between, I have been on Twitter and FB and have the .. ummm. Luck? To be christened #blameCarla. Enjoy your stay in our little Magazine and hope you contribute and enjoy it. #blameCarla

Sarah Twilley
(A Cappella Editor) Hey there, Chaserdom! *waving* I'm Sarah, a sunny girl born and bred in sunny Southern California. I'm currently pursuing my dream of having a career related to music by studying vocal performance at Long Beach City College and will be ready to transfer within the year! When I'm not working on school, I fill my time with singing at church, working with the jr. high group at church, and hanging out with friends. I love having fun times at Disneyland with fun people! I also love blogging, writing stories, and being crafty. My love of a capella started back when I was kid. My mom sang in a vocal jazz sextet, so I was surrounded by tight jazz harmonies for most of my young life. Fast forward to Summer 2006, when a friend of mine sent me a link to this YouTube video of 10 guys doing this hilarious "12 Days Of Christmas". I was a fan instantly! Between that summer and fall 2009, I got sidetracked by some other very worthy musicians, but managed to land on the SNC website that fall. I attended my first show in Anaheim in the spring of 2010 and found myself diving into the a capella community not long after. And not only have I found myself a devoted fan of each one of these fabulously talented men, I have also found a host of new friends whom I love! I am super excited about this fun little venture and Im honored to be a part of it!

Friday September 24th, 2010 11:11 am @BreakOfDon joined on Oct 2nd and @RomeIfUWant2 on Dec 3rd. #SNCfunfact: Rome reached his first 100 followers 40 minutes after his first tweet.

THUS BEGAN the epicness that is now known as the #SNCTwitterWars. After an AMAZING four-hour battle, at 3:15pm Ryan reached 1000 followers and was declared the winner. Only seven of the SNC guys were actually on Twitter; Charlie's account wasn't even a week old, and he was just a few away from 100 followers. Walt mentioned that he himself was only 6 million followers away from Lady Gaga. In a truly pivotal #SNCTwitterWars moment, someone *cough*Kim*cough* replied that Walt was ten times better than Charlie (because Walt had ten times the followers, you see?). So, Charlie came back with:

How has SNC inspired you?

TO PUT INTO words how much SNC has influenced me in my life, I think, is almost impossible. Ive fallen in love (again) with a cappella, Ive been introduced to the collegiate a cappella scene and contemporary a cappella music, and Ive even unlocked passions I didnt know I had! Im a member of an a cappella group at USC, and because of the several activities Im involved with in the Chaser community, I think I might have even found my major and potential career But of all of this, I think whats inspired me the most are the people Ive met through SNCs wonderful music. Words cant describe how lucky I feel to be a part of such a loving, caring, amazing community; the friendships Ive forged here are some of the strongest. I never knew that I could feel so connected and so close with people that, for the most part, Ive never even met face-to-face! And for that, Im truly grateful. Shaina Eng BECAUSE OF SNC, Ive been re-inspired by music; theres a fresh feeling about their music, when I was feeling music had become tired. Listening to SNC (first their holiday music, and then With a Twist in Spring 2010) made me feel excited about listening to music, and I played their music over-and-over (and over!). It brought about overwhelming joy. Its hard for me think that music can transform a person, but I believe it has with me, especially SNCs musicmy sister has commented shes noticed me becoming more expressive since coming to know SNC. I think Ive always been expressive, but I think they do bring it out of me, more often. This is also true for the wonderful friends Ive met because of SNC-this is the most profound impact I can make note of. This community of Chasers is like no other group Ive been a part of-you are thoughtful, selfless, giving, patient, genuine, humorous, and just amazing people. Yeah, Im talking to YOU. Thanks for listening! Annie LaDuca

If you would like to share how Straight No Chaser has inspired you, please send us your testimony to sncquarternotes@gmail.com. Wed love to hear how SNC has changed your life, just as they have changed ours!

entle sea breezes... Ocean waves lapping at sandy shores Sunshine and blue skies stretching for miles While these may be the first images to come to mind when a typical visitor thinks of Atlantic City, the average Chaser thinks of one thing: Straight No Chasers summer residency. SNC returns to Harrahs Resort in Atlantic City this summer with a new show, Back to the Shore: Songs of the Decades and More. The group is scheduled to perform each Saturday Wednesday evening from June 27th September 4th at Harrahs Concert Venue. The title suggests a similar format to last summers show, but the gentlemen of SNC promise new music for this years gig. No matter the songs they select, the performance is sure to be stellar. Chasers will be sure to flock to the Jersey shore for the sweet sounds of Straight No Chaser, but they should also take the time to explore this beautiful seaside resort. There is no shortage of things to see and do in Atlantic City and the surrounding area. into the sunshine as you people watch, enjoy some salt water taffy, and take in the beautiful ocean views. From the boardwalk, take a walk down onto the beach. If New Jerseys humid summer days get to be too much to bear, go for a dip in the Atlantic. Life guards patrol swimming areas, and the best part is that the beach is free! Many New Jersey seaside towns require beach tags, but the beach and ocean are free for all to enjoy in Atlantic City. Outdoor Adventures You dont have to have sand between your toes to venture outdoors. Climb the Absecon Lighthouse, take a sightseeing tour by boat on the Atlantic or through the back bay, or look for wildlife on a dolphin watching cruise. Fishing charters offer anglers the opportunity to catch bluefish, striped bass, flounder, tuna, and sharks. The Atlantic City area also offers dozens of golf courses. For more information on golf courses, sightseeing tours, and fishing charters, go to atlanticcitynj.com and look for the link to the Atlantic City Visitors Guide. Shop til You Drop Shopping opportunities abound in Atlantic City. Located in the heart of town and centered on Michigan Avenue, the Atlantic City Outlets known as The Walkspan several blocks, with construction continuing throughout 2011. The Walk offers a variety of clothing retailers, childrens clothiers, shoe stores, jewelry and specialty shops, and restaurants. Visit acoutlets.com for a complete store directory, map, and hours. The Quarter at Tropicana hosts retailers such as Brooks Brothers, Brookstone, Chicos, and Swarovski. This winding casino shopping mall

Casino Resorts Casino resorts dot the town. Harrahs Resort is located in the marina area in the northern part of Atlantic City, along with Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and Golden Nugget Atlantic City (formerly Trump Marina). Casino resorts also line the boardwalk section of town, such as Tropicana Casino and Resort, Caesars Atlantic City, and Showboat Hotel and Casino, just to name a few. Each casino resort offers a variety of overnight accommodations, gaming, dining, spa, and entertainment options. You might choose to test your luck on the slot machines, with many machines offering wagers as low as a penny. If you are feeling lucky, you might take a spin on some roulette, pick your Keno numbers, play a hand of blackjack or poker, or give craps a try. Who knows? You might just win enough to fund your own Chaser residency in Atlantic City! A tip for the new visitor: Stop by the customer service desk at any casino resort to sign up for a free rewards card. Use your card when gaming or with many purchases to rack up points for comps. Ask for a coupon book when you sign up for a rewards card account. Many casino resorts will include coupons for reduced price dining or buffet meals, shopping and spa discounts, and even free merchandise. Reward cards can often be used to obtain a reduced parking fee when leaving that casinos garage.

also includes specialty stores like Godiva Chocolatier and gift shops. For more information, see tropicana.net/thequarter. Shopping stretches out over the waves at The Pier Shops at Caesars. This over-the-ocean mall offers luxury shopping like Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co., as well as popular brands like Levis, Victorias Secret, Gymboree, and Apple. Dont miss the jellybean version of Lucy the Elephant at ITSUGAR on the lower level near the boardwalk. Check thepiershopsatcaesars.com for special offers and information. Dining Atlantic City certainly serves its fair share of boardwalk grub like fries, pizza, salt water taffy, fudge, and ice cream. However, dining in AC certainly doesnt stop there. Casual dining choices are plentiful, as are fine dining experiences. Each casino resort offers a range of options, often including a buffet (see sidebar). Entertainment Youve come to AC to see Straight No Chaser, but you might want to check out some other showson the nights SNC isnt performing, of course. Countless musicians and comedians make a stop at one of Atlantic Citys casino resorts or halls. Search the Calendar of Events at atlanticcitynj.com to find out whats happening in Atlantic City during your visit. Other special events often come to town as well. The Food Network will host the Food and Wine Festival from July 28 to July 31 (info at acfoodandwine.com) and the Atlantic City Airshow will take place on August 17 (see atlanticcitynj.com). What Else Will You Chase? Although SNC may bring you to AC, there are many other chase-able experiences to be had. Dont miss out on the chance to gather with your fellow Chasers and experience what Atlantic City has to offer. Stretch your concert visit into a vacation and get to see what the real Jersey shore is likesun and sand, with a twist, of course. (Map found on flip side.)

Ten Dining Spots to Try in AC

At Harrahs Reflections CafThink diner, but not in the roadside greasy spoon way. Reflections Caf serves breakfast foods, sandwiches, burgers, nachos, and the like. If you are looking for casual sit-down food with a group of friends, check out this Harrahs restaurant on the first level, past The Pool. Taste of the Shore Food CourtThis food court offers ice cream, soft pretzels, pizza, and hoagies (a.k.a., subs for the non-South Jerseyans out there). Sack O Subs is a favorite among the SNC guys. The food court is a good bet when youre looking for a quick, less expensive bite to eat. The food court is on the first level, near The Pool. Waterfront BuffetCome hungry! The buffet offers a salad bar, steaks, pastas, a carving station, seafood, wok selections, sushi, dim sum, and desserts. Waterfront Buffet is adjacent to the promenade on the first floor. McCormick & Schmicks Seafood RestaurantLocated around the corner from the Concert Venue, McCormick & Schmicks includes fresh fish, seafood, and steak entrees. The restaurant also offers a large selection of drinks at the bar. Check out the menu at mccormickandschmicks.com. Club CappuccinoIf youd like to grab a quick cup of coffee, enjoy some cappuccino and pastries, or just need a snack, look for Club Cappuccino near the hotel lobby. At The Pier Shops at Caesars The ContinentalA popular Philadelphia restaurant, this Atlantic City site offers global tapas in a funky Brady Bunch type atmosphere. Choose from small plates or order entres. Offerings range from a Crispy Calamari Salad to Korean tacos to French Onion Soup Dumplings to Monkey Bread. You can see a menu and pictures of the restaurant at continentalac.com. Phillips SeafoodWhen you think Phillips, you think crab. Phillips serves crab cakes, crab dip, cream of crab soup, and crabmeat cocktail. The menu also includes fish, seafood, steak, and pasta. Check out phillipsseafood.com. BuddakanAnother transplant from Philly, Buddakan serves some delicious Asian dishes. The giant Buddha and long center table make for an interesting atmosphere. For details, see buddakanac.com. At The Quarter at Tropicana Cuba LibreEnjoy the Latin flavors and wonderful Mojitos of Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar. The menu comes complete with glossary for those unfamiliar with Cuban food. Take a look at cubalibrerestaurant.com.

Familiar Streets
During the Great Depression, Charles B. Dorrow invented the game of Monopoly and named the properties after the streets in Atlantic City. This unemployed inventor sold copies of the game to friends and eventually to a department store in Philadelphia. When he approached Parker Brothers, they initially dismissed his game for having too many flaws. Darrow continued to make and sell the game himself before the company purchased it in 1935. Were betting Ted Leafwater already knew that.

Tips for Getting Around AC

Harrahs Resort is in the northern end of town, and the boardwalk is not accessible from Harrahs property. If youd like to visit some of the other casino resort properties, it is best to drive. Unlike Monopoly, there is no Free Parking in Atlantic City. Be sure to get a rewards card for the casino you have parked in. At many times of the year, you can pay a cheaper parking rate if you are a rewards card member. If youd like to visit another casino, check with the parking attendant when leaving the garage. You can get a receipt which may allow you to park for free in another casinos garage that same day. If you are visiting Atlantic City without a car, you can call a cab or use the Jitney to get around town. Jitneys have been serving AC since 1915. These mini-buses do serve the marina area and can get you closer to the boardwalk. Each ride is $2.25.

SNC at Origins
One Chasers retelling of a rare SoCal SNC sighting
By Shaina Eng
hough it may have been a short show, or a miniconcert if you will, Straight No Chasers Origins performance at South Coast Plaza (located in Costa Mesa, California on May 19, 2011) was not lacking by any means. Like many other Chasers, I found out about the Origins show exactly a week before it was scheduled to happen, on Twitter. Sarah Twilley and I planned to attend the show together, and once the day arrived, we headed over to South Coast Plaza in the afternoon. We reached the mall around 3:30pm, and as we entered the mall, we heard the sound of ten guys singing the opening bars of Africa ring out throughout the mall. They were soundchecking right as we arrived, and though we were tempted to peek at their soundcheck, we ended up just listening from afar instead.

Before the show, we browsed the various stores and boutiques around the area of the mall we were in, met up with friends and family members (my friends, Sarahs brother and mom), and sat around, staking our claim for a prime viewing spot of the performance. Then, at about a quarter to show time, the guys start showing up, one by one. We all waited anxiously for the show to start, and a crowd had started to gather around the area Then, right on cue, a lady from Origins begins to speak, and out they come! They started off the performance with "Heard It Through the Grapevine," featuring a modified version of their full choreography. Then Don stepped out, thanked the people at Origins, and explained that they were having facials around 3pm. ("Which was a first for most of us. If we have a

particularly healthy glow about us, that's why.") They then went into "Tainted Love," which we had heard earlier as they were soundchecking, then they launched into the Jackson 5 Medley (the first time us West Coast Chasers had heard it live)! Following that, Ryan stepped forward to introduce "Under the Bridge" (by a band from Los Angeles, "which is Spanish for 'los angels'") while also talking about how traveling is one of the perks of being a member of SNC. After that, Walt reintroduced SNC for the people that just arrived ("walking aimlessly around the mall" is what I believe Walt said), and then he introduced "I'm Yours," the winner of the Origins poll. After they sang "I'm Yours," Seggie laid down the beat for "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and Jerome killed the solo, like always. At the end of the song, Jerome and Mike flirted with one of the older ladies up front (so funny), and then they segued into "Billie Jean/Poison" with snips of choreo and Jerome's awesome dance moves, including the moonwalk! After that, Walt stepped up again and says, "That's the first time someone's done the moonwalk in the mall

since the 80s, man!" Then he told the audience to check in to Origins on Foursquare in order to be entered into a ticket drawing. After that, he thanked Origins ("They are kind to the environment, and we are kind, too." Hahaha.), and then he introduced their final song, the song they opened with at the O2 Arena in the UK, "Joy to the World." As they held out their final note, they got a standing ovation (most of us were already standing anyway, but the people at the planters stood up and applauded), and then it was announced that people could go inside the store for refreshments and goodies, and that we could also get autographs and pictures with the guys right outside of the store. We had not been expecting that SNC would be doing a meet and greet afterwards, so it was a very pleasant surprise. It was a very memorable meet and greet (which involved some antagonizing by me and Seggie, Walt pretty much yelling HI! to me when I was literally right in front of him, musings on where the Airtight wandered off to, Tyler singing the SNC FanChat Theme Song, me being interrupted in the meet and greet to do an interview for Origins, a discussion

about elephants, a comment about the Microsoft Store in the mall by Randy, cupcakes, a baby gift, and a hilarious photo of Don with my friend, among other things). After the meet and greet, I got a few cupcakes from inside the store (they were amazing), lingered around for a bit, and, along with Sarah, agreed to do yet another interview for Origins. We waited for the camera crew to be ready as they were doing a quick photo and video shoot right outside the store, so (with the permission of the Origins executive) I snuck up and took a few photos of the guys myself. It was definitely an event to remember, and not something Ill forget any time soon! ______________________________ To see my video of Straight No Chasers full performance, visit YouTube.com/watch?v=Ew4xzgknXhg. House Jacks concert review The Hyannis Sound Aca Q&A: Peter Hollens The Sing-Off updates Sarahs Voice Crush Summer Playlist

BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!

The House Jacks: A concert review and Chaser adventure
By Tara Kellerman ike many Chasers, I was first introduced to the amazingly talented, a cappella legend, and all-around hilariously funny guy, DEKE SHARON, when the SNCFanChat crew featured him on their podcast back on October 31, 2010. After literally laughing out loud (seriously, take another listen, it was hysterical!) while listening to the
Photo Julie Futer 2011

interview, I was intrigued when Deke mentioned *his* group, The House Jacks. I logged on to my computer, hit up their website, www.housejacks.com, and started looking around. First thing I noticed was that their tour schedule just listed European locations. Bummer. After clicking around a bit, I came to their music page. OH.EM.GEE. I was blown away by what I heard and literally bought Get Down Mr. President after only hearing their cover of 'Since You've Been Gone'. The House Jacks is known as 'the rock band without instruments' and they beyond live up to that description. They have released eight albums combining original music with some well-known, smartly arranged covers. Their most recent release, Level, features 12 original songs that

range from rock to blues. Members include Roopak Ahuja, Troy Horne, Jake Moulton, Deke Sharon, and Austin Willacy. Fast forward to this past April. Some MACs (MidAtlantic Chasers) had met up the month before in Lancaster, PA and were trying for a repeat meeting. However, plans changed when Kim Davis happened to peruse The House Jacks' website and noticed they had a stop in PENNSYLVANIA on their tour schedule, at a middle school, no less (The House Jacks were ending the Central Bucks A Cappella Festival). My heart just about jumped out of my chest when I found out!!! Not only were they going to be LOCAL (Europe is a bit too far away and a lot out of my budget), but it was ON MY

BIRTHDAY, April 30th (which happens to also be only 2 days before Kim's birthday)!!! What a way to celebrate!!! I was bound and determined to go to this concert, if it was the last thing I did!!! Now, I had been much more...enthusiastic, yes, that's a good word, enthusiastic, not obsessed or anything, about The House Jacks than most of my friends, but luckily Marna Lampe (not sure if she had much choice in the matter), Kim Davis, and Julie Futer decided to check them out with me!!! I was SO excited (<-yeah, I said it!) that people were interested in going. It was our chance to see THE Deke Sharon!!! THE DEKE SHARON!!! We simply could not pass up the opportunity!!! :) I had been e-mailing the ticket contact at the school and he

24 SNC QUARTER NOTES

SUMMER 2011

hooked us up with FRONT ROW CENTER seats!!! I was in SHOCK!!! I could not have been more thankful and appreciative to Mr. Ian Sanchez. It was fun to meet him in person and thank him profusely. In addition, I had posted to Austin Willacy, The House Jacks' tenor, a message that 'some Chasers and I were excited to get to see him live'. I also mentioned that it was my birthday celebration, to which he replied, 'Is it your actual birthday day?', and I told him it was. Little did I know what was in store for me. The show began with an adorably fun, barbershop chorus called The Bucks County Country Gentlemen. They had a great sound and it was clear they were enjoying themselves on stage. In addition, they featured a quartet of a select group

of gentlemen. This quartet bestowed their talents upon the concert goers as they entered the building, as well. (Silly aside: one of the guys reminded Marna and me of Walt...in about 10-15 years!) Now time for The House Jacks! As soon as they came out, you could feel the energy shift in the room! They took the stage with a gazelle-like slow motion, faux run (quite silly, I might add), to uproarious applause and an enthusiastic 'I LOVE YOU' from a fan in the audience (not me--seriously, not me!). To which an 'I love you, too' was returned by Austin! The show opened with a song entitled 'Get What You Wanted' which has not yet been recorded/released. It was SO cool to watch these five men work together on stage. The

All photos (2) Tara Kellerman 2011

sounds they are able produce with just their mouths is quite unbelievable. They continued with various songs from their latest album Level. (Check their website for a preview and information on how to get yourself a copy!) Between Jake's almost inhuman (in a good way!) vocal percussion skills, to Deke's true-toinstrument horns and baritone sounds, mixed with Troy's bass notes, combined with Austin's and Roo's tenor vocals, a unique and masterful sound is created. They are truly magic when performing on stage together. Not only are The House Jacks extremely talented vocalists, but they are HILARIOUS on stage as well. I was thrilled to look around and see Marna, Kim, and Julie having such a great time at the show. I knew they would, but it was still priceless to see the looks on their faces and hear them laughing whenever one of the guys made a joke! Next thing I know, I hear Austin begin to say something about 'someone having a birthday...a Tara in the audience'. Hearing this, I began to get shifty-eyed and whispered to Marna, 'Nooo...couldn't possibly be...nooooooo!!! OHMYGOSH!!!' at which time Austin

says, 'Well, she just gave herself away!!!' Flaming red, I was brought up onto the stage where I was sung the traditional 'Happy Birthday' followed by a raucous rendition of The Beatles' 'Birthday'! Could a birthday get any better than that?!?!?! No way! To our delight, The House Jacks did a Meet and Greet after the show, where we got to introduce (and possibly embarrass) ourselves! Can we say, The Godfather, *ahem*, Kim?!?! (Oh, and maybe confiscate an advertisement poster or two...#notme) We informed the group that we were there representing the CHASERS of SNC, most specifically the MACs (which somehow turned us into MACadmia nuts! Nuts??? Not US, no way!) and that we would spread the word about their wonderful music! I am proud to say that I had the privilege of meeting THE DEKE SHARON!!! I remain hopeful that The House Jacks will return to the NY/NJ/PA area again soon!!! If so, you MUST get to their show! You will not regret it! ________________________ ***For videos from this concert go to Kims YouTube channel: Youtube.com/user/klancy96. 25

know there are many of you Chasers reading this, thinking Hyannis Sound... I've heard these guys mentioned somewhere before. Why can't I think of where? Please allow me to refresh your memory. SNC's very own Tyler Trepp spent a couple of summers singing with Cape Cod's elite allmale acapella group. While that fact alone is probably enough to cement their awesomeness within Chaserdom, it doesn't even begin to hit the surface of the amazing talent that entertains on the Cape every summer. The Hyannis Sound got its start back in 1994 when a Skidmore College student named Townsend Belisle decided he wanted to start a summer group on the Cape. Townsend had already founded a similar group, The Vineyard Sound, with friends on Martha's Vineyard two years before. Since then, 10 talented young men convene on the Cape for a busy and fun summer of performing. According to Tyler, being a member of Hyannis Sound is like

taking 10 of your friends from college and all doing the same summer job. Except your job is to sing acapella songs for 90 shows in 3 months in lovely Cape Cod, MA. If you don't know the members when you join, you get to know them pretty quick as all 10 of us live in the same house. It's where we rehearse, eat, sleep and hang out. It's a grueling 2 weeks before the shows start of rehearsing all day and trying to work up 20-30 songs to sing for an anxiously waiting Cape Cod crowd. It's a very busy summer but a very fun one. Our days off are rare but we're doing something that we love so it really doesn't matter. As far as the acapella world goes it's like the summer all-star acapella group. Guys from all around the country try out, and are a part of this group. It's an amazing experience and I'll never forget singing in hot churches on weeknights. They are all-stars indeed! The Hyannis Sound alums can be found singing in many popular acapella groups, including Straight No Chaser, The House

Jacks, Firedrill!, and Duwende. As a result of being the nation's all-star acapella group, The Hyannis Sound's arrangements are intricate, but without being too busy. Their sound is 100% amazing and, of course, as with any all-male group, their personalities and camaraderie add a touch of humor to every performance. These guys raise the bar for college acapella. Even just one summer in this group leaves a lasting impression on someone, as it did for Tyler. My time in HS has definitely influenced me. The year I made the group, I was the only new guy (as they only took 1 guy that year, whew lucky). It took some initial adjustment to get used to, but very quickly I found that I fit right in with these guys. I learned so much from each of the guys in the group with me both summers, as they all are unique in their own way. I know it has influenced me as a singer and a musician. Learning 30+ songs and singing every day helps you become much stronger. I also learned how much the group cares about one

another and their alumni. They throw an alumni show EVERY SUMMER (not just milestone years) featuring one of the past groups and any and all alumni are welcome/encouraged to come to the Cape for that show. The time in HS was a great experience and I met some of my best friends in the group, who I am still close with. You can still see them on Cape Cod, every summer. Just look for guys in shirt, tie, and khakis walking into a church on a weeknight in Cape Cod. So if you find yourself anywhere near the Cape this summer, make sure you have an open evening to check out The Hyannis Sound at one of their regular weekly shows. For more information on the group, including concert schedules, visit their website at www.HyannisSound.com. Also, if you'd like to find out more about their brother group, The Vineyard Sound, you can find them at www.vineyardsound.org. Both groups can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Within short order, a stand-out singer emerged from University of Oregon's 'On The Rocks'. Peter Hollens blew listeners away showcasing his vocal range during week 3 with the lead on 'Kyrie', followed by a clean close of the Elton John Medley during week 4 with his lead on 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'. Peter continues to pursue his passion of making music. He recently released a cover of Lady Antebellum's 'Need You Now' featuring his lovely and talented wife, Evynne, and the vocal percussion master, Jake Moulton (of The House Jacks). His arrangement of this song made me an instant fan! He also released his take on Billy Joel's 'Lullaby'. It is impossible to listen to the sweet sound of this song and not be left with just one word, beautiful. Peter is working hard to be able to bring new music to his fans every Thursday. Peter took some time out of his busy schedule to share some insight into his background, inspiration, and hope for the future. Check out what he had to say!

When did you first develop an interest in a cappella? Do you come from a musical/a cappella upbringing? For how long have you been singing? When I was in 8th or 9th grade I heard a cassette tape of a group from BYU doing a cappella, (Vocal Point) and I really ADORED it... might have even been 10th grade? Anyway, since then I had wanted to do it when I went to college. I started singing my freshmen year in high school because my mother made me promise to take choir after she let me dump my French class. It was a trade off. :) I had never sang before then....only in the shower! :) How did you become involved with On The Rocks? What was it like being a part of it? I founded the group once I got to the University of Oregon and found there to be no other a cappella groups at the school, or even in the entire NW for that matter. :) Being part of it was one of the biggest life changing experiences to date, just a blessing. How has your appearance on The Sing-Off affected your life? I think it's allowed me to go after something I've always wanted to dorecord my own

How has the feedback been with your 'New Music Thursdays'? I personally LOVE it!!! Thank you!!! I think it's been positive. It's very hard to keep up with all of the deadlines, especially when Who are your musical influ- real life things start popping up, ences? Need a bit of pella (or just in general), with whom would you most luck, but I'm working on it. want to collaborate if given With what would you like to the opportunity? leave your fans? Yes, you Hmm, musical influences, god, REALLY do have them!!! virtually everyone that has come Oh, I dunno about that yet, but before me. I feel like I don't for the people who support me necessarily have one (person) and follow the music I make, I specifically. Hopefully further into the popular realm, so all of the insanely talented musicians I have met in the last decade doing what we do, can make a living. It's so cool to see The Sing-Off and Glee really push contemporary a cappella to the forefront. Are you interested in writing/currently working on any original songs? Maybe. :) (Facebook.com/peterhollensmusic). That actually really helps a lot! Well, Chasers, if you are interested in checking out some amazing a cappella, be sure to subscribe to Peter's YouTube channel and 'like' his Facebook page. Also, be on the lookout for new music on Thursdays. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors, Peter! Can't wait to hear what you have in store for us! 27

THE SING-OFF recap

By Shaina Eng
TEN GROUPS, but only one will be given the title of Sing-Off Champion. You may have seen the show on NBC during the Christmas season over the last two years, but for The Sing-Offs third season, the executives at NBC have decided to make a change; The Sing-Off, which used to be a seasonal show, is now a weekly series. And along with this change in schedule comes another big change; a new judge. We dont know who it is yet, but whoever it is will replace Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, who is now co-host of The X-Factor. Auditions for the third season of The Sing-Off have concluded, and the groups that made the cut have been notified. Taping will begin in mid-July in Los Angeles and will go until August. If youre in the Los Angeles area, or if you want to come out to LA to see the show, tickets will be made available to the general public (most likely through 1iota). For more information on the show, please visit NBC.com/sing-off or Facebook.com/TheSingOff.

Sarah's Acapella Voice Crush of the Quarter

By Sarah Twilley
I LOVE GREAT VOICES. Listening to acapella, I come across a ton of great voices. But every so often, a voice hits me deeply. I have to hear it again and again. And again. I start searching YouTube and other various internet sources to get more of that voice. And that, dear readers, is what makes a voice crush. Summer 2011: Andy DeLong Groups: The Hyannis Sound (2005-2008), Ocean's Four What is it about ANDY DELONG that makes him special? With Andy, it's kind of hard to put into words. He's got a quality to his voice that makes it stand out. He's just so smooth! The first time I heard his solo voice was on Hyannis Sound's cover of Marc Broussard's "Rocksteady" (Shirt! Tie! Khaki!). Not only does he easily interpret the soul that Broussard always has, but then he scats. And boy does he scat! My other favorite Andy song is on the Black Crowes' "She Talks To Angels" (On The Clock). The angst and sadness of the song, the soul, all of it comes right out of his voice. It seriously gives me chills just thinking about listening to that song. His voice is buttah. Pure buttah.
