Number: Effective Date: HOSPITAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PROCEDURE I. INTRODUCTION Hospital being one of the many establishments that generates solid waste in the environment, and greatly contributes its effects to global warming and health hazards to residents if not properly manage. II. WASTE GENERATED BY HOSPITAL 1. Pathological Waste 2. Infectious 3. Chemical Waste 4. Plastics/Bottles 5. General Waste (Non-hazardous) 6. Kitchen Waste 7. Pharmaceutical Waste 8. Human Waste 9. Hazardous Waste 10. Chemical Waste 2.1 Pathological Waste Consists of tissue, organs, body parts from surgical operations, biopsy, autopsy, human fetuses, animal carcasses and most blood and body fluids. 2.2 Infectious Waste includes cultures and stocks of infectious agents from laboratory work, waste from surgery and autopsies on patients with infectious diseases, waste from infected patients in isolation wards, waste from potentially infectious cases, waste that has been in contact with infected patients undergoing haemodialysis (e.g. Dialysis equipment such as tubings and filters, disposable towels, gowns, aprons, gloves and laboratory coats) and waste that has been in contact with animals inoculated with an infectious agents or suffering from infectious diseases. 2.3 Radioactive Waste Generated from nuclear medicines section, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and paraphernalia used. This is in the form of solid, liquid and gas contaminated with radio nuclides, exemplified by radio-iodine technetium 99 and tridium in particular, excrete of patients who underwent radio isotopic therapeutic application, the needles and syringes, test tube and lap waste washing of such paraphernalia.

2.4 Chemical Waste Comprises discarded solid, liquid and gaseous chemical for example from diagnostic and experimental work and cleaning, housekeeping and disinfecting procedures. Chemical waste maybe hazardous or non-hazardous. Hazardous Chemical Waste is considered to be waste when it is toxic, corrosive, flammable, explosive and genotic. Non-hazardous Chemical Waste consist of chemicals other that those described above, such as sugars, amino acids and certain organic and inorganic salts. 2.5 Infectious Waste Includes cultures and stocks of infectious agents from laboratory work, waste from surgery and autopsies on patients with infectious diseases, waste from infected patients in isolation wards, waste from potentially infectious cases, waste that has been in contact with infected patients undergoing haemodialysis (e.g. Dialysis equipment such as tubings and filters, disposable towels, gowns, aprons, gloves and laboratory coats) and waste that has been on contact with animals with an infectious agent or suffering from an infectious diseases. 2.6 Sharps / Needles Includes needles, syringes, scalpels saw, blade, broken glass, nails and any other items that can cause a cut of puncture. 2.7 Pharmaceuticals Waste Includes pharmaceutical products, drugs and chemicals that had been returned from wards, have been spilled, are outdated or contaminated or are to be discarded because they are no longer required. III. HOSPITAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PROCEDURE The hospital with the assistance of Northwest Aklan Inter-Local Health Zone established the Material and Recovery Facility at the hospital with the primary purpose for waste segregation inorder to simplify waste disposal, recycle, re-use, reduce, some materials and sell those that are no longer needed by the hospital. Compartments available at the Material Recovery Facility: 1. Plastics 2. Bottles/Cans 3. Metals 4. Cartoons/Papers 5. Disposal general waste 6. Pathological waste 7. Needles 8. Hazardous waste 9. Batteries 10. Electric Lamps 11. X-ray Films

* Collection and Storage of Hospital Waste: 1. Cleanliness of the hospital ward and other facilities is a primodial concern of the hospital management. Cleaning and collection of waste is undertaken by the utility personnel at least 3x day. There are 3 shifts of duty for utility personnel each day. Collected wastes are brought to the Material Recovery Facility Area for segregation. Segregated waste materials are stock at the designated compartments. Hazardous, pathological and needles wastes are deposited also to a designated storage compartments. Disposable general waste that could not be re-use are collected by the Local Government for disposal once every week. Waste that can no longer be re-use and recycle and are sold to scrap entrepreneurs. Sales derived from the scrap, are kept and can be use only for waste management activities and projects.
