When and How to Apply As a result of some very long waitlists, UNIS has restricted Admissions for some grades. If you are posted to Hanoi, it is strongly advised that you contact the Admissions Office before you relocate to ensure that space is available for your child(ren). Students who are able to apply are strongly encouraged to do so as early as possible. UNIS is at capacity in most age groups and as mentioned, has long waitlists. Applicants who cannot be enrolled due to lack of space in a grade shall be placed on a waiting list until a place becomes available. Those who cannot apply will have the option to receive notification when Admissions will open for a specific age group. In most cases, it is not possible to predict when this will be. Applications are available only from the UNIS Admissions Office and cannot be downloaded from the website. UNIS seats students at all times of the school year, but will review what is in the best interest of the child. For example, students may not enter UNIS during the last week of a quarter or semester.

Admissions Criteria UNIS will accept students who can be successful in the daily academic programme, provided there is space available in the grade. If there is no space, students will be placed on a waiting list on a first come, first serve basis, the date of which a complete application is submitted. (please see below for definition of a complete application). UNIS does its best to assist students applying from overseas, but must operate according to policy as described in paragraphs below. The Admissions Policy is subject to change at any time with approval from the Board of Directors. An application review will only begin after a complete application is submitted to the UNIS Admissions Office by post, email or fax. Even still, further review may require direct contact with the current or previous school of the child and an EAL test may be required to establish the level of English proficiency. UNIS uses a North American grade and/or age placement scale for class admission. A student needs to have turned three years old by 31 August to be accepted into the Discovery Programme of that academic year, for example. This has changed from October 31st for previous academic years. As the IB Diploma programme is run over two years, UNIS will rarely accept students into grade 12 unless they have come from another IB school and can continue with their subject choices. Admission to UNIS may be denied for any of the following reasons: 1. Lack of preparation for an age appropriate grade level 2. Insufficient English proficiency if our EAL program is at capacity 3. Class size has reached capacity 4. School history of discipline problems 5. Involvement with drugs 6. Other reasons which may be in the best interest of the school and the student as determined by the Head of School, or learning difficulties requiring expertise beyond what the school is able to provide.

Please note that if your child holds dual citizenship and you wish him/her to be registered under more than one, you must provide passport proof for the other nation claimed. All forms MUST be signed by both parents/ legal guardians of the student. The following forms and payments are expected before a student can attend school and are included in the UNIS Enrolment Package. This package will only be provided when a student is offered a position at UNIS. All submitted applications must be completed in full . If the information is not yet available to you, or you need guidance on how to proceed, please contact the UNIS Admissions Office.

Dual Citizenship Every October, UNIS hosts UN Day where diplomats, UN officials, host country guests and the UNIS community come together to celebrate the goals and aspirations of the United Nations. On this day, the youngest and oldest students representing each country will dress in traditional costumes from their native land and carry the country flag on stage. It is a day which UNIS-Hanoi values and is a day of great anticipation for all. Please be specific on your child's application in providing the passport documentation when claiming dual citizenship for your child. It may enable him/her to represent their country or perhaps even represent a country whose flag is not yet "flying at UNIS!

Admissions Policies Policy #7.100 (Prioritization) Applications are prioritized as follows: 1. Children of UN and Diplomatic Employees posted to Hanoi 2. Children of expatriates posted to Hanoi, regardless of employer 3. All other applicants 2. Within each of the above groups, applications will be considered according to their date of completion. All items required to complete the application are listed on the second page of the attached Application Package. 3. If your child is a dependent of a UN Employee or Diplomatic Mission in Hanoi, you must provide a copy of the UNLP, Letter of appointment, Diplomatic passport, Travel orders or Vietnamese issued Diplomatic ID Card as proof of this status. 4. Siblings of enrolled students may receive priority Admission but only at the discretion of the Head of School. Policy #7.12 (Entrance Age) Students will be placed into a grade according to their age so that they study with peers of the same age. Children are routinely assessed after Admission by their teachers, principal and school counselor to ensure that they are in the correct group. Assessments usually take place after the student is enrolled in grade according to our policy. Students may be considered for other grades as language proficiency, academic performance, maturity, and social skills will allow, and only at the discretion of the principal. If your child is studying in a grade different than peers of the same age, please contact Admissions. Policy #7.13 (Cultural Diversity) Our cultural diversity policy is set in place to ensure that UNIS-Hanoi remains a truly diverse international school. The policy stipulates that no more than 20% of the students attending UNIS can come from any one country. This is also managed at the grade level to prevent pockets of students from one nationality unbalancing the classrooms. Policy #7.14 (EAL) 1.

Students attending UNIS will all be given equal opportunity to elevate their level of English as needed. Our EAL (English as an additional language) programme operates for Pre-Kindergarten students through Grade 8 to assist students who do not yet have strong English skills and to develop their fluency to become more comfortable in the English curriculum used by UNIS and most International schools. EAL students take EAL class whilst native English and other students fluent in the English language may study a second language. The language will vary according to age. The EAL policy limits the percentage of EAL students who may join in any one grade. For ECC students (Discovery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten) this percentage is 50%. For students grades 1-8 it is reduced to 30%. Limiting this percentage assists students in developing their English skills faster because they are surrounded by a higher percentage of proficient students. At the Grade 9 level, students must have reached at least an intermediate level of English. Students needing EAL support in Grades 9 through 12 are not admitted. In cases where classes are full, priority for admission will be given to students fluent in English. (See Admissions Policies above.) Policy #7.15 (Class Size) UNIS limits the number of students as follows: Discovery 12 Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten 16 Grades 1 & 2 18 Grades 3-12 22 Classes may not exceed the above numbers, unless authorized by the Head of School.

Change to Admissions Age Policy (Effective Aug 2008) The UNIS Board of Directors has approved a change to the age policy which may affect your child as a new applicant. The UNIS cut off date is in-line with other international schools which is August 31st. Efforts will be made to contact each family who has applied for their child/ren before this change and who is affected by the change to discuss their options. UNIS understands that some families may wish to apply the August 31st date. Admissions will discuss these cases with each and every family and remain as flexible as possible. We want to do what is best for each child. If you have any questions about his change in policy and how it could affect your child, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Office. Age Range 2010-2011

Waiting List If you have received a letter indicating that your child has been placed on the waiting list, it is required that the parent send something in writing, via email, fax or post, informing the Admissions Office of your wish to keep your child on the waiting list. If confirmation has not been received by the date shown on the waitlist letter, the student will be removed from the waiting list and the application will be considered withdrawn. Often times families leave Hanoi if they are unable to get schooling for their children at UNIS, so it is critical that we receive confirmation from the families. The waitlist rolls over each year so that prioritization of the students on the waitlist is maintained. Families of students remaining on the waitlist past the 1st semester of the academic year will be contacted to submit new documents and to confirm that they wish to remain on the waitlist for the next academic year, should a space not be available again in August. Applications will only be reconsidered when all new documentation is complete.

Withdrawal If a student is to withdraw from UNIS, a notification must be sent to the Admissions Manager, Mrs Bronagh Lucardie at admissions@unishanoi.org as soon as possible to commence exit procedures.

Every student leaving UNIS at any time must receive clearance from all their teachers, the Library, the Accountant, and the Principal's Secretary. These clearances must be obtained before the leaving certificate, school records and transcripts can be released. UNIS will not withdraw a student until the Admissions Office receives written confirmation directly from the parent via email or letter, indicating the date of a student's last day. If you are aware that you will be leaving, but do not yet know the official date, please contact Admissions immediately. Again, your child's seat will not be given away until the departure date is clearly confirmed in writing. The early notification of withdrawal helps the processing of another child off the waitlist. IfIf the parent or paying organization feels that a refund is due, a request must be sent in writing. This request can be included with the notification of departure to the Admissions Manager or it can be sent directly to the Assistant Accountant (assistantaccountant@unishanoi.org) or the Chief Accountant (chiefaccountant@unishanoi.org), in the Business Office on the first floor of the Administration Building.
