p5-595 Server Resource Management

Release Date: Feb 2007

1. The worksheets in this Excel Spreadsheet provide inf. on Resources available, allocated and free on p5-595, and Resources allocated to each LPAR. 2. This can be used during LPAR creation and then to manage resources on the server, LPARs and the spare pool of processor, memory and adapters. Worksheet Server Description Highlights of the server (Model, Type, Serial no, HMC Info), available and free resources for Processors, Memory, SCSI disks, Ethernet adapters and FC adapters. The right side table shows the processor and memory allocated to each LPAR with other profile parameters and spare pool inf. This is a LPAR view of resources allocated - disks, Ethernet adapters and FC adapters with spare pool of disks, ethernet and FC adapters. Slot ID for each disk, ENT and FC adapter is also included here. The front view of the RIO Drawer with serial no., type of adapter in each slot with slot ID and the LPAR association. The rear view of the RIO Drawer with serial no. capacity of disk and LPAR association and LPARs sharing this resource. These sheets have the 'lsmap -all' command output from each VIOS.

Note: 1. Processors & Memory - Day/Night resources: All Production LPARs have the same resource for Day and Night except PVI LPAR9 & 10. Dev and Test LPARs have higher allocation of resources during day and lower allocation of resources during night. 2. Processing Units: For Dev and Test LPARs, since night resource is the lower no. it is set as the Desired units.

CTC p5-595 for PD and PVI When these LPARs are activated, they come up with the resource required for the night. All LPARs are set to Uncapped. No. of Desired Virtual Processes is set to the no. of Processing Units required during the Day which is the higher of Day and Night requirement. If the workload increases during day time then LPARs will dynamically add more processing units from the spare pool upto the max. limit of no. of Desired VPs. Since Desired VPs is set to the day time requirement, LPAR can not get more processing units than the Desired Processing Units. 3. Processing Units for Production PVI LPAR9: This requires 4 Processors during Day and 24 during night. Setting Desired VPs to 24 with Uncapped allows this LPAR to utilize upto 24 Processors during day time and can deprive Processing units to other LPARs. Hence, for this LPAR, DLPAR from HMC is used to change the Desired VPs from 4 to 24 during night and then from 24 to 4 during day. LPAR10 goes through DLPAR similar to LPAR9. 4. Memory: This has two settings - Day and Night. While creating the LPAR profiles, Day quantities are used. HMC runs DLPAR to change this to night requirement and then back to day requirements at the specified time. Min. and Max. memory limits allow DLPAR operations by HMC to change the memory between these upper and lower limits. 5. Weightage: Divided into 4 tiers. LPAR Type VIOS PVI LPAR9 & 10 Prod LPARs Dev-Test LPARs Weight 255 192 128 64 Explanation Highest priority, VIOS should not be deprived of resources, they enable sharing of resources. During night operations, they get the maximum resources compared to other production LPARS. These get higher priority compared to Dev and Test LPARs Last priority

6. NIM Server: PLM and Performance Management Tools are run from NIM server. 7. VIOP01 and VIOP02 support production LPARs, VIOD01 & VIOD02 support Dev LPARs and VIOT01 & VIOT02 support Test LPARs. 8. Using the APV features of Shared processor pool, Uncapped, Weightage and Desired VPs, processing units can grow upto the set limits for all LPARs as and when required for Day and Night operations without using DLPAR operations, except for LPAR 9 and 10. For LPAR9 and 10, HMC runs DLPAR as described in Note 3.

Note: 1. Shared Network adapters from two VIOS: For the first few LPARs, primary adapter is from the first VIOS, the backup adapter is from the second VIOS. For the next set of LPARs, primary adapter is from the second VIOS and the backup adapter is from the first VIOS. This helps to balance the network load across both VIOS serving LPARs. While configuring NIB on the client LPARs, the primary and backup adapters must be selected as per this guideline. The Column Dedicated/LPARs sharing under network shows pairs of VIOS for client LPARs. Eg.,VIOP01-VIOP02 for few LPARs and VIOP02-VIOP01 for the second set of LPARs served by the pair of VIOS VIOP01 and VIOP02. 2. FC adapters sharing from VIOS: Each SAN disk will have three paths. Same LUNs are presented to both VIOS from SAN perspective. EMC Powerpath is installed on each VIOS for load balancing and multi-pathing. From both VIOS, disks are presented to client LPAR as VSCSI disks. On each client LPAR, AIX MPIO will present the two disks (one each from the two VIOS) as one disk. Pair of VIOS provide high availability for VIOS failure and each VIOS provides load balancing and protection for path failure.
