Awake O Muslims!!!

All praises to Allah Taala and choicest blessings upon our beloved Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad . Muslims are in the darkness of ignorance, superstition, evil and sins. We have fallen from the high pedestal of glory and respect due to our apathy towards the teachings of Islam. Another cause for our degeneration can be attributed to the tendency of deviating from that pure lifestyle practiced and taught by our beloved Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad . If Muslims hold firm to two things they will not be misguided; 1. The Noble Quran. 2. The Sunnah of Hadhrat Rasulullah . If we survey the historical development of Islam, then we will observe that numerous groups arose who interpreted the Glorious Quran and Ahadeeth contrary to the true spirit of Islam. Many discard Sunnah practices and some introduce innovations. Islam is perfect with no scope for additions and deletions. Hadhrat Rasulullahs beautiful lifepattern is sufficient guide for us. We are duty bound to obey all

the laws and commands of Allah Taala as explained, interpreted and practiced by Hadhrat Rasulullah . The manner and method of worship taught by Rasulullah is perfect and any deviation is like finding flaws in the perfect system. Our salvation most certainly lies in following the blessed ways of Hadhrat Rasulullah . Following the Sunnah of Hadhrat Rasulullah is such an important factor that the mere expression of our love for Allah Taala is not enough. We have been warned that this Ummah will be split into seventy three groups, all of whom will be in the fire except one. The group which adheres strictly to the Blessed Quran and Sunnah will be saved. Sensitive and pious Muslims are generally anxious about the decline and fall of this nation. The cause and reason for our spiritual and moral diseases etc. are not defined and attended to, thereby creating a major catastrophe. We have become complacent and neglectful of our existence and purpose as Muslims in this world. We need to take lessons from the previous nations. The decline of Banoo Israaeel started when the pious witnessed sins committed by transgressors, they prevented them, but they did not repent and the pious continued their friendship with them, so Allah Taala united their hearts in the same category. Nowadays it is considered a merit and a requirement of etiquette to have Peace with all, and

please everyone on every occasion. This is a wrong policy which promotes evil. When sins are committed openly, all are affected. If sins are taken lightly and not even considered as sins then generally one is not favoured with repentance and guidance. Muslims need to reflect on their state of condition, inspect their priorities as Muslims and seek advice from pious learned scholars in all their matters. The anti-Muslim world desire that the Muslim public stay aloof from their leaders and a huge gap be created to achieve their anti-Islam goals easily. The evils of this world are many and the greatest is wealth. This is accompanied by suffering and misery. Wealth however, has its benefits which may lead to salvation. One has to be very vigilant so that one is not tempted and trapped with evil. The magnitude of the waves of the evil and corruption are on the increase. Many prophecies of Hadhrat Rasulullah have been unveiled like beads falling off a broken thread and still many to follow. Some prophecies mentioned are: 1. Islam began alien and it will return as it began. 2. A believer in the morning will become a disbeliever in the evening and a believer in the evening will become a disbeliever in the morning. 3. The person who holds perseveringly onto Islam will be like one who holds onto burning coal. 4. Islam will remain by name and the Glorious

Quran by script. 5. There will be no differentiation between Halaal and Haraam. 6. Everyone will consume interest or be afflicted by its smoke. 7. The murderer will not know why he has murdered, nor will the murdered person know why he was slain. 8. Nations outwardly will be like brothers, but secretly enemies. 9. Time will contract to such an extent that a year will be like a month, month like a week, week like a day, day like an hour and an hour like the time to ignite a fire. 10. The appearance of sudden death. 11. Competition in building huge and luxurious Masaajid. 12. Wine will be considered Halaal as drinks, usury as a transaction, bribery as a gift and Zakaat funds will be used for business. 13. People will greet only those they know and business will spread to such an extent that a woman will help her husband in his business. 14. A person will go to distant corners of the earth for business and upon returning say, I made no profit. 15. Women will be clothed yet naked. They will attract others and they themselves will get attracted. Let us not despair, but hold fast onto the rope of Allah Taala and follow the lifestyle of Hadhrat

Rasulullah . May Allah Taala guide and help us all, Aameen.

TAFSEER
(Commentary of the Holy Quran)
By: Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Sahib (Rahmatullaahi Alaihi)

SURAH AL-BAQARAH
Note: This part of Tafseer is the remaining portion of Surah Al-Baqarah Tafseer and hence connected with the previous chapter of Surah AlBaqarah Tafseer.

o o o

And be steadfast in Salaah, and pay Zakah, and bow down with those who bow. Do you bid others to righteousness while you ignore your own selves, although you keep reciting the book? Have you then no sense? And seek help through patience and prayer. And it is indeed exacting, but not for the humble in heart who bear in mind that they are to meet their Lord, and that to Him they are to return. (Verse 43-46)

In the last three verses and these four, Allah

Taala reminds the Israelites of the blessings He has bestowed upon them, and invites them to Islam and to good deeds. The earlier three verses were concerned with the true faith and doctrines; the present verses speak of good deeds, mentioning only the most important of them. It was usually the love of money and power that made it difficult for the Jews, specially for their scholars, to accept Islam. The verses prescribe the remedy for the twin diseases they should fortify themselves with Sabr (patience) and Salaah (prayer). Patience is a very weak translation of the Arabic word Sabr, which has three connotations: (a) bearing pain and misfortune patiently (b) restraining oneself from sin (c) being steadfast in obeying Allah Taala. Now, patience, in this wide sense, is the perfect remedy for the love of money. For, money cannot be an end in itself, but is sought only as a means of satisfying ones appetites; when a man has made a firm resolve not to follow his appetites like a slave, he will no longer need much money, nor will the love of money blind him to the distinction between his gain and loss. Similarly, Salaah is the remedy for ambition and the love of power. For, outwardly and inwardly both, Salaah involves the exercise of humility; naturally, the more one tries to perform it in the proper manner, the more it purifies him of the love of money and power, and of ambition and pride. These being the real substance of all spiritual disorder in man,

once they are brought under control, it becomes easy for one to accept Islam and to be steadfast in ones faith. Let us add that while patience (Sabr) requires only the restraining or giving up of excessive appetites and unnecessary desires, Salah, in addition to all this, further requires the performance of certain actions, and also a temporary renunciation of perfectly lawful desires and of many human needs which the Shariah allows one to fulfill, e.g. eating, drinking, speaking, walking etc. and, at that, making such a renunciation five times during the day and the night regularly at fixed hours. Thus, Salaah means performing certain prescribed actions and restraining oneself from all lawful or unlawful activities at fixed hours. Once a man has decided to give up unnecessary desires, the instinctive urge itself loses its intensity in a few days. So, the exercise of patience is not, after all, so difficult. But offering Salaah entails submitting oneself to the conditions laid down by the Shariah, observing the fixed hours, and giving up the basic human activities and desires, all of which is quite exacting for the instinctive disposition of man. So, one may very well raise an objection here: for the purpose of making it easy for a man to accept Islam and to be steadfast in his faith, the Holy Quran prescribes Sabr and Salaah, but to use this remedy is in itself a difficult thing, specially the Salah and its restriction now, how

10

can this difficulty be overcome? The Holy Quran admits that performing Salah regularly and steadfastly is, no doubt, exacting, and proceeds to show the way out of this impasse Salaah is not a burden to the humble in heart. (to be continued, Insha
Allah)

The Narrations of The Bed of Hadhrat Rasulullah

(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)

Hadith
Hadhrat Ayesha (Radhiyallahu Anha) reports that Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallams) bed was
made of leather, which was filled by the fibers of the palm tree.

Commentary:
The bed which Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah
used, was at times made of leather as the one stated in the above hadeeth, or at times it was made of canvas. At other times it was only a mat made of palm leaves. This subject has been
(Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam)

11

narrated in many Ahaadeeth, that when the Sahabah (Radhiyallahu Anhum) asked permission to make a soft bed; Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) used to reply: What do I have in common with worldly comforts. My example is that of a traveler who after walking, stops under the shadow of a tree for a while to rest, and after sitting a while continues on his way. Hadhrat Ayeshah (Radhiyallahu Anha) says: Once a woman of the Ansaar came and saw an abaa (cloak) spread on the bed of Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). She turned home and made a bed in which she filled wool, and sent it to me for Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). When Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) returned and saw the bed, he enquired, What is this? I replied: A certain woman from the Ansaar came and after seeing the bed of Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) she made and sent this bed. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, Return it. It looked good to me, and I did not feel like sending it back. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) insisted that send it back, and said: I swear an oath that if I desire Allah Taala will line up mountains of gold and silver for me. On these words of Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) I returned the bed. Sayyidina Hadhrat Abdullah bin Masood (Radhiyallahu Anhu) says: I once came to Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). He was resting on a mat made of palm leaves,

12

the marks of which could be seen on the Mubarak body of Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). After seeing this state I began to cry. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) asked: What is the matter, why are you crying? I replied: O Messenger of Allah, The Qaysars (kings of Rome) and Kisras (kings of Persia) sleep on beds of silk and velvet, and you (who are the Nabi of Allah) sleep on this palm mat. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: It is not a thing to cry about. For them is the world and for us is the Hereafter.

LESSONS
1.
Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) lived very simple and ascetic life. 2. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) preferred the everlasting bounties of the hereafter over the temporary comforts of this world. 3. For the Ahaadeeth regarding the bed of Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) it is learnt that at times Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) slept on a bed and at other times on the floor with some sheet etc. under him. It will be Sunnat to use either one. 4. Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was given the choice by Allah Taala to lead a comfortable life by wanting to turn mountains into gold for him. Yet Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) refused and chose to lead a simple life.

13

5.

We who profess to love Sayyidina Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) should also lead simple lives, not to be extravagant in our spending and necessities of life and not make our necessities of life our main objective and ambition of life.

Nabi s Love for Children

By: Maulana Abu Talha Muhammad Izharul Hasan Mahmood
Translated By: Mufti Afzal Husain Elias

Nabi 's love towards his children

Remember well, our beloved Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was an embodiment of kindness towards all mankind, but his affection for his own children knew no bounds. Hadhrat Khadijah bore him four daughters and two sons. Whilst Maariyah Qibtiyah bore him one son who was named Ibrahim after his forefather Ibrahim . (This was the total number of his children. All three sons passed away during their infancy.)

Love for Hadhrat Qasim and

14
Hadhrat Abdullah

Hadhrat Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was very fond of his son Hadhrat Qasim and it was for very reason that he had given himself the title, Abul-Qasim. When this flower from the garden of Nubuwwat reached the age of walking, he passed away. On one occasion Hadhrat Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Wasallam) saw his beloved wife Hadhrat Khadijah very grieved. Upon enquiry she said, How nice

Alayhi

would it have been, if our son Qasim had only completed the duration of breastfeeding? Hadhrat Nabi Akram (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) consoled her saying, O Khadijah, Allah has appointed a wet nurse in Jannat to complete his period of breastfeeding! Hadhrat Abdullah was born after him and he had the titles, Tayyib and Taahir. This son also passed away at a very tender age.

answered her thus,

Crying is a result of mercy in the heart. (in other words we should not wail.) O Ibrahim, we are undoubtedly grieved by our demise. Our eyes shed tears and our heart is grief striken, but our tongues will only utter that which pleases our Rabb. (Bukhari)

Beliefs
It is not obligatory on Allah to do that which is most beneficial for His slaves
It is the claim of the Mutazilah sect that it is waajib (obligatory) for Allah Taala to do that which is most beneficial for His bondsmen. However, this is incorrect because waajib comes from the root word wujoob. Wujoob demands istilaa (i.e. the commander regards himself superior to the addressee) as it is one

17

of the requirements of amr (command). Further, istilaa is entailed in the definition of amr as mentioned in Noorul-Anwaar (pg. 28): (to tell someone to do something whilst the commander considers himself superior). Who can consider himself to be superior to Allah Taala and make anything waajib on Him let alone that which is most appropriate for His bondsmen!

Discussion of Imam Abul Hasan Ashari with Jubaee regarding the above
Imam Abul Hasan Ashari asked his teacher Abu Ali Jubaee, How will Allah Taala deal with three brothers one of whom was pious, the second was a sinner and the third passed away during infancy? Jubaee answered, Allah Taala will admit the pious brother into Jannah, the sinful brother into Jahannum and the infant brother will be sent to Araaf (a stage between Jannah and Jahannum). On hearing this Imam Ashari said, Sir, the answer was simple and clear but I failed to understand it.
He then asked, What answer will Allah give if the infant brother says, O Allah! Why did you cause me to die during infancy? You should have allowed me to live so that I could have carried out good actions and thereby enter Jannah?

Abu Ali replied, Allah Taala will say, I knew that had you grown up you would have disobeyed me. So the most beneficial thing for you was that I save you from Jahannum by taking away your life during infancy.

18

Imam Ashari then said, What answer will Allah then give if the sinner has to ask Allah, Why did you not give me also death during infancy so I would also have abstained from sin and be saved from Jahannum? On hearing this, Abu Ali was dumbfounded and unable to answer. Shaikh Abul Hasan Ashari had thereafter abandoned Abu Ali Jubaee and formulated the Usool (principles) of the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaah. The Ashairah are attributed to him. (Sharh-ul-Aqaaid, pg 6).

Jurisprudence

THE LEGAL STATUS OF FOLLOWING A MADHAB

By: Justice Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Translated by: Muhammad Amin Kholwadia

(Continued from the previous issue)

The Taqleed of an individual and following ones whims and fancies

It has been discussed earlier that both, absolute Taqleed and Taqleed of an individual is permissible. However, when the level of moral integrity and compliance with the spirit of the Quran and Sunnah deteriorated, scholars issued a fatwa confining Taqleed to an individual only. The attitude which the scholars hoped to curb with this Fatwa was abuse of ambiguous

19

issues in the name of Islam and Islamic legislation. Today, the whole Muslim world is in a frenzy of this kind of permissiveness and so-called modernization. In the name of Ijtihad and free thinking the edifice of classical Muslim scholarship is being dismantled. Academic institutions have been erected to bolster absurd interpretations legalizing promiscuity, profane photography, dancing, usury and music. Articles quoting the Quran and Sunnah to justify such positions have proliferated throughout the Muslim world1. Denouncing Taqleed has been highlighted as one of the many to achieve this profane goal. Ironically, in the effort to denounce the works of the classical scholars, these reformers have inadvertently confirmed the foresight of the very same scholars who had issued the Fatwa centuries ago. They have become the very proof of unbridled pursuit of ones caprices and passions. As long as the Taqleed of an individual was the norm in Muslim communities, these ideas were not given any due attention. Vulnerability to unfounded propaganda and pseudo-intellectual claims of scholarship in the contemporary era has given rise to the acceptance that Taqleed of an individual is forbidden in Islam. The state of affairs today is that established principles of Islam and issues which are conclusively forbidden by the Quran and Sunnah have been targeted and treated with skepticism and even scorn.

The Taqleed of an individual and new issues

1

Prominent writers in this campaign include Muhammad Aabduh and his student Rashid Rida.

20

Arguments have been advanced that Taqleed of an individual impedes solutions to modern developments. The answer to such a contention is that modern issues which demand Ijtihad should be delegated to an expert scholar whose Taqleed is very different from that of the lay person. Such an expert scholar would be able to sift the principles of earlier Mujtahids and resolve new problems based on the same. This type of Ijtihad had been prevalent in all ages even with the concept and practice of the Taqleed of an individual. Moreover, scholars of one school may unite upon solutions to new problems which arise. Where there is a severe need for an immediate national or social problem, scholars are given leeway and hence, they can resort to the Fatwa from another school. This is the reason why, in the Hanafi school, scholars have resorted to following the opinion of Imam Malik in issues like accepting wages and salaries for teaching the Quran, making legal provisions for divorce for a wife whose husband is lost or whose husband is impotent. This has been elaborated by Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi in his work Al-Hilytul Najizah lil Hilyatul Ajiza. If there is a social need for Muslims to find latitude in a certain issue, an expert scholar may go to any of the four Madhabs to find a solution. Under no conditions is the practice of Taqleed permissible, which is to use the Fatwa, offered by one Imam and following another Imam in the same unit of Ibaadah. Individuals are advised to seek the advice of expert scholars through a council. Taqleed of

21

an individual, in reality, has never rendered the community incapable of resolving new issues, rather it has constantly been in a state of flux and development addressing new issues for more than a millennium1. It is interesting to note that some contemporary orientalists have made the same allegation2.

Bringing Up Children In Islam

(Continued from the previous issue)

By: Maulana Dr. Muhammad Habibullaah Mukhtaar Translated by Rafiiq Abdurrahmaan

Responsibility relating to Physical Education

Fear Allah Taala
When fear of Allah Taala is rooted in a person, all sinful and evil acts will be shunned. One will then realize that Allah Taala is watching, and is aware of everything, whether apparent or hidden. One will take account of every excess and every omission of duty. Allah Taala Most High will punish the disobedient and the cruel.
1

The details of the methods to arrive at these solutions can be found in elaborate works like that of Ibn Abi Deen and the work of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi mentioned above.
2

Refer to Montgomery Watt, Islamic Political Thought, Edinburg University Press and N Coulson, A History of Islamic Law, Edinburg University Press.

22

Young people must attend scholarly gatherings and assemblies where Allah Taala is eulogised. One must offer ones fardh Salaah and make it a habit to offer nafl Salaah and recite the Quran-e-Kareem. One must cultivate the fear of Allah Taala Most High, the habit of Muraaqabah (contemplation), and the realization of His majestic powers. This is possible when one accustoms oneself to arise in the dead of the night for the Tahajjud Salaah, keeps nafl saum, listens to the chronicles of the noble Sahaabah , spends time with pious people, keeps contact with the righteous and remembers death and the hereafter. Therefore, develop such habits so that one is not drawn into temptation and sensuality. Remember that the punishment for disobedience and sinning is the fire of Jahannum.

Harmful effects of intoxicants and drugs

Nowadays, this is a very common susceptibility. Youngsters who have no Murabbi to guide and look after them, fall into this type of addiction easily. Youngsters whose parents neglect their training also fall into this habit. Children become spoiled due to the bad company they keep. We will discuss this subject from three angles: Harmful effects of drug abuse.

23

The Sharee injunctions regarding its use. An effective method of getting rid of it.

Harmful effects of drug addiction on health and intellect

Insanity, loss of memory, stomach disorders and ailments of intestines, affliction of the mind, upsetting of the digestive system, anorexia, loss of appetite causing thinness and sexual weakness and hardening of veins and sinews. It is known that in France, the number of deaths from intoxication surpasses the number of deaths caused by tuberculosis1. In 1955 there were seventeen thousand deaths from intoxication and twelve thousand from tuberculosis.

Monetary disadvantages
Indulgence in this habit causes extravagant expenditure. An addict is unable to perform well, if at all. He is weak, remains an unknown entity and is physically and mentally a disabled person. In 1965, seventy-two million Americans were addicted to toxicants. Of these twenty million absented themselves from work, causing an annual loss of two billion dollars to the economy.

Psychological, moral and social

24

disastrous effects
A person addicted to drugs develops bad habits. He often tells lies, is cowardly and belittles moral values and worthwhile achievements. He steals and is shameless, oppressive, tyrannical and irresponsible. Such a person will suffer most in the hereafter. It was the colonial powers that encouraged drug addiction and so ruined the standard of life of other people. Their scheme was to destroy the character of Muslims and leave them unworthy of Jihaad. This is what the British did to the people of Egypt and China. (to be continued, Insha Allah)

Hadhrat Maulana Moosa Aakodi Sahib of Binoni at Raheemiyyah campus

Hadhrat Maulana Aakodi Miftahi Sahib, a resident of Binoni Africa, visited Darul-Uloom Raheemiyyah

28

Bandipora on 9 Jamaadi-Saaniyyah 1432 AH corresponding to May 13, 2011. He stayed here for a short while, however, his stay was pleasing and cheerful. Hadhrat Maulana Moosa Sahib had spent many years in the blessed company of Hadhrat Aqdas Maulana Maseehullah Khan Sahib Jalalabadi (Alaihirrahmah) and gained knowledge at his educational institution, Miftahul-Uloom Jalalabad. He has also spiritually benefitted from this saintly elder, Hadhrat Maseehullah Khan Sahib (Alaihir-rahmah). At present, Maulana Moosa Sahib is being reckoned among the Khulafaa of Jenab Peer Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqashbandi Sahib Daamat Barakatuhum. Recently, when Hadhrat Peer Sahib visited India, Maulana Moosa Sahib accompanied him in Madras. After Peer Sahibs return, Maulana Moosa Sahib travelled Kashmir. It is a matter of great affection and attachment that Maulana Moosa Sahib expressed a wish to visit Raheemiyyah Bandipora from Srinagar, despite tha fact that on the same day he was to pack for his return to Delhi and subsequently to proceed Srinagar Airport early, but he slotted Raheemiyyah visit in just before his departure positively. At Raheemiyyah, Maulana Moosa Sahib met the faculty and the students, blessed them with kind supplications and then returned to his destination happily.

Health professionals visit Raheemiyyah Conducted check-up, advised follow-up

29

We are living in an era in which medical practitioners (with a notable exception) are sandwiched between the materialistic pursuits and luxurious lifestyle. And such practitioners do not bother to find time to do any kind of voluntary work whatsoever. We have made an exception as there are many such doctors and paramedics in the Muslim community who are rendering excellent health service to the poor and the needy voluntarily. Darul-Uloom Raheemiyyah Bandipora also witnessed an excellent health service of some noble doctors who visited Raheemiyyah campus on May 18, 2011 Wednesday and conducted a check-up to the students of Raheemiyyah and distributed medicine among them. This posse of doctors was comprised of the following noble souls:
Dr. Mansoor Sahib of Qamarwari Srinagar (Dental Surgeon). Dr. Showkat Kadla Sahib of Ilahi-Bagh Soura, Srinagar (HOD Gastroenterology SMHS Hospital Srinagar). Dr. Maajid Nazeer Sahib of Rajbagh Srinagar (Ophthalmology SMHS Hospital Srinagar). Dr. Showkat Husain Sahib of Frisal Kulgam (Pediatrician District Hospital Handwara).
